thanks for the screenshots. I love the extra screen space and you've have rid my fear that things will be too small. I am concerned about what you are saying about brightness and quality. It seems like you and someone else who got the 17" are saying their older ones looked better. I hope these aren't worse panels. I hope my new one looks as good as my old. If you have any further impressions about the colors and brightness I'd love to hear. If anyone else has received theirs I would love to hear their thoughts as well!

Why pay good money to make everything look smaller and less legible on-screen?
Better to put the money towards a 24" display, for when hi res images are actually needed, leaving the 15" to perform more comfortably at normal resolution.

Actually that's not entirely true. What you're really getting with the high-res display is something with a finer dot pitch. If you don't like the text being too small, just enlarge them. So maybe on a high res display a 15 point font will be physically appear to be the same size as a 12 point font on a normal res display. But because of the finer dot pitch you'll notice that the text will have smoother edges and look much better.

All LCD displays have minor variations that would mean my profile could possibly make your display look worse.

I know that. Right now I'm using a profile I found for the matching glossy screen (similar panel). Can I just try yours? :)

LOL, ok....I was confused because the one on the left seemed to have a HR display (everything was smaller), but the one on the right seemed much darker in the first pic, and you said the new one was darker.

Sorry my camera is crap; the difference isn't that great. I only noticed at full brightness which I never use (even outside—anti glare means I don't need it fully bright).

Can you can find out what panel you have by opening the terminal program in OSX and pasting the following command:
ioreg -lw0 | grep IODisplayEDID | sed "/[^<]*</s///" | xxd -p -r | strings -6
and post the result?
Thanks!

could you please check for any backlight unevenness? I have 2 areas which are more lit up than other parts of the screen on my matte 17" i7 MBP.. I might exchange it for a matte 15" i7..

note: best test would be looking at a black image on full screen in a dark room.

The bottom left of mine looks a tad brighter if I look closely. I think that's pretty normal.

Matte vs Glossy

I just came from the Apple store where I took a look at the 15 Anti-Glare (which ive been waiting for since November to buy) and I have to say i'm a little bummed. The colors are not vibrant, seemed washed out on the anti-glare in comparison to the glossy. Also, opening up Iphoto and arrowing thru pics, I was surprised on an i7 just how long it took to load complete focus, 7200 might help. Frustrated! Granted im looking at this under a lot of overhead lights, but it really was just not that great looking. I have 5 year old LCDs that looked better.

How are you people who have the anti-glare at home feeling about color saturation, etc.

PS - really wish they could have kept a black border, the silver looks a lot more "cheap".

Color is alright after a calibration; it at least matches my desktop when looking straight on; off axis it's crap.

Is off-axis graying out also a problem with the glossy displays or just the anti-glare?

Thank you for this thread. I have been waiting for a year to buy a MBP and now am paralyzed by making a decision on glossy vs. matte! I hate the reflections on the glossy but keep feeling like I may be losing out on something by buying the matte.

Why not pay a little extra so I can see more on the screen, I constantly have to scroll, scroll, scroll and scroll.. the left to right space is great on the hires.

@Alphaod
Could you make a fullscreen screenshot (cmd+shift+3) of the screen of the hi-res MBP on a website and a word document? I'm really curious on "how small" it is...

Thanks a lot :)

Still waiting the damn Glasgow store to get them in stock!

Hopefully Monday or Tuesday..

Hi and congrats on your purchase!

Did you notice any difference in heat output between mid-2009 and mid-2010 models? Is mid-2010 model any hotter, are fans louder or quieter? I need to know how does new model handle low, mid and 100% load (temperature wise)

Thanks!

I currently have the previous model 2009 17" with a high res ani glare screen. I really thought about switching to the 15" because everything is soo small on the 17".

Now - Apple only released a antiglare on a high resolution display on the 15" which gives me the comprise of having to deal with a glare screen or having a high res screen again.

Compared to the 17" high-res - is everything about the same size? I mean is everything as small or smaller or bigger in comparison to the 17" or about the same?

The PPI is lower on the 15" high-res than it is on the 17".

I forget the actual figures.. someone posted them here. Wasn't much in it, maybe 4-6 pixels difference per inch. Enough to make a difference though.

Meh, I've given up on waiting for UK stores to get the high-res in. Either order one, or like i'm doing, get the standard-res from in store. I feel you'll be waiting for a while, and I'm sure you don't want that [bad] reminiscent feeling, coming from the Waiting For Arrandale thread!

Regarding the screenshots. Thanks a lot for them. BUT, like someone comment on above, the standard-res browser has the tab bar showing, which has obviously bumped all the content of the site down. So even though it looks much bigger, it seems as though it's not AS big of a difference as the screenshots show. Capiche?

Couldn't wait. I picked up a 15" i7 HI-RES matte. I LOVE IT. So glad I went with matte. Debating on if I even need this 24" display I got with it. Might not bother opening it and return it.
