Why all the frowns at the 19 month upgrade status? You buy the 4S KNOWING you are signing a 2 year contract (that's 24 months by the way). Yet in "19" months you are eligible for an upgrade. Sounds pretty good to me. So, I will have this rather nice 4S until 19 months from now, and then I can get another, newer, faster, fancier iPhone? I'll take it! :p

Yes, but before this, if you spent $100 a month on your line, you got upgrades every 12 months. I'll give them until the phone gets to me to see if the date changes, but if this is the case, I'll be lowering my plans cost by a pretty good amount. I've always been paying for things I didn't really use 100%, so I can now drop that down. I always thought of the yearly upgrade as sort of a 'Hey, thanks a lot!' thing.

The fix, of course, is once the system settles down and we all actually receive the phones, if things stay the same, we all need to complain. Emails, phone calls, etc. If enough people complain, they will change the policy back.

AT&T has never offered me a me anything more than the "early upgrade" at an additional cost. Which I assume is probably because I only have very limited minutes & texts and my monthly bill is further discounted for being a public employee.

It's just the principle of being told one thing by a rep, and getting something completely different. They also seem to change their policy on a case by case basis, giving some people credit, changing some peoples dates, etc. It's just wrong IMO.

I got the same date and I have upgraded my phone every year and paid the 2year contract price.

But really I am not gonna sweat it now because #1 I don't even have my iPhone 4s yet and #2 why am I gonna worry about my eligibility for an upgrade that I can't even order for another year.

Plus this date may change so i am just gonna wait and see what happens.

Just called and complained about being mislead, and I was credited $250. SCORE. :D

That is the same thing I got in the text message when sent the upgrade text message to AT&T this morning.

I just done the update online I want to make sure that it went through.

At that price, you should get one at full price then save the upgrade for iPhone 5 next year.

I just purchased an iPhone 4S at $399 + $250 (early upgrade fee). When I dial *639# now, I get "You may select equipment at our full retail pricing. An upgrade may be available on 05/08/2013."

When I called AT&T yesterday, a rep told me that EARLY upgrade will not affect my STANDARD upgrade date, and that it would stay the same. It was 11/18/2011.

Was I lied to? I asked more than once because this sounded odd to me, but the rep kept reassuring me that it was true.

I would DEFINITELY call & complain. Some complaining does good :)

I guess yearly upgrades are a thing of the past. I just upgraded and now I show an upgrade date of 05/08/2013!!!!! WTF, 19 months makes no sense. Oh well I guess I'll be using my early upgrade for the phone next year.

You know the yearly upgrades thing was a response to misguidedly self-entitled iPhone 3G customers complaining about not being able to get the 3GS upon launch at a subsidized price, which AT&T carried over to the iPhone 4 to further humor such customers, right? You do know you signed a 24-month contract, in which the subsidy for your phone is spread out across those 24 months, right? 18-19 months for subsidized upgrades is pretty normal for those of us who don't have iPhones.

This is the same reason why I'm gonna save up and buy a 16GB 4S at regular price. That way I can have the iPhone 5 in October 2012 with my regular upgrade.

I usually get an upgrade every 12 months, because of what I pay on that line. But after buying the 64 GB iPhone 4S, my next eligibility upgrade is May 8, 2013.

Either they've changed something, or I'll hopefully be eligible in October 2012.

Same situation here. Usually a 12 month upgrade for me because of my plan but this time it seems that the upgrade has been moved to the same date that you stated. Hopefully it changes because I have done this three years in a row.

The upgrade eligibility rates can and do change. When I bought the discounted 4 last summer, my new upgrade date was set for something like February 2012. This summer I noticed it had been changed to July 2011, so I have just pre-ordered the 4S.

I actually think it would be in AT&T's best interest to allow you to upgrade early, because now that there is significant carrier competition with the iPhone, at least they know they've locked you in again for another 2 years when you upgrade.

Co-signed. Have bought every iPhone on release date with the discounted price (excluding the first one of course) with no extra fees. I was always up for a new phone every 12 months. I was up for a new one now, pre-ordered the 4S and now I'm showing the same date in May 2013. They have moved them in the past, but say the new phone comes out in October 2012 that's a HUGE move. If they don't move mine when the new phone comes out I'll cancel and go to Verizon.

I believe that AT&T will move your upgrade up if you continue to pay your bill on time. I was under the impression after talking to a few AT&T reps about this that this is the case. If you have a bill that totals over $100 a month that you can upgrade every 12 months unless you don't pay your bill on time.

They could have changed this policy but my guess is that your date will slowly start to move up during the year if you pay your bill on time.

This is the reason that I cannot understand anyone using the two year contract upgrade path for the iphone 4S if they already have a 4.

Putting off your upgrade eligibility until 2013 is the deal breaker for me. This is such an incremental upgrade to an already very good if not great phone.

OK better camera and faster oh yeah siri so I can talk to my phone and everyone will know what I am doing.

The Iohone 4 is a great phone plenty fast and a great form factor. Patience folk patience. There is going to be a huge feeling of, "What did I do?" from all the 4S upgraders when the 5 comes out in a few months.

Of you have a 3G or 3GS jump now it is a huge upgrade! But if you have a 4 wait wait wait!
650 for the phone you should have added a few bucks to that and bought it outright without a contract!
JMHO

You aren't listening to the people in this thread. Who cares what we are upgrading too? For the past 4 years we have had 12 month upgrades, now all of a sudden we don't, that's the issue. Now, maybe it will change, but that is where it sits right now.

Yes yes, please come with the, "Well you signed a 2 year contract!" Well I signed a 2 year contract the past 4 years and re-upped after 12. So that argument really isn't holding water with me.

I'm with AT&T..I get an upgrade every year. I signed my 2 year contract in July 2010 and have been eligible for 3 months now. Apple pretty much owns AT&T. I know they don't "actually" own them, but Apple pretty much handed them millions of users when they agreed to the iPhone deal. If AT&T pisses of it's iPhone fan base and they leave, the company would sink in 3 years.

I sure will. I've been keeping a 89.99 plan for the yearly upgrade but don't use nearly 20% of my anytime minutes. Its even less usage with free calling to any mobile. I have more than 11,000 rollover minutes that I'll never use. Hopefully they adjust my upgrade date * fingers crossed*

Two year contract yes but, according to the rep I spoke to, my STANDARD upgrade date should have stayed the same. I found that odd as well, but some others have posted the same thing here.

Well, this sucks. One of the reasons I did it is because I thought I'd still have my upgrade for the next iPhone, and wouldn't have to pay the $250 AGAIN.

Some other members here confirmed this, so that made me feel better.

I asked the woman very clearly in three different ways, and she was very assertive that Early and Standard upgrades have nothing to do with each other.

At this point, I'm fed up with AT&T. They've been handing out credits, changing peoples upgrade eligibility dates, etc. After six calls, they'd do NOTHING to me, except misinform, apparently.
LOL, why are you bashing them? you chose to pay $250 extra bc you couldn't wait 30 days. then you didn't read the fine print and now you're ticked off.

It usually takes some time for upgrade eligibility dates to be evaluated and changed based on your monthly fees. This is what will happen all the time. Give it a few months with your new phone on your new plan and the dates will likely eventually change again.

This is also one of the reasons I preordered from Apple- if I don't think its a significant upgrade, I can return within 30 days with no restocking fee. If I love it, and my upgrade date doesn't change to 10-8-2012, I'll just pay an early upgrade next year. Money isn't the issue, just the principle.

Ah, I see. I've never had that 12-month option. It's always been a two year deal for me. I guess it's all about the fine print. Best of luck!

Actually I thought I read on Apple.com this morning that there is a 10% restocking fee on iPhone returns. I could have that wrong though.
