LOL, why are you bashing them? you chose to pay $250 extra bc you couldn't wait 30 days. then you didn't read the fine print and now you're ticked off.

Wrong. Did you even read my post? I was ticked off because I was told that if I pay $250 and upgrade early, my standard upgrade will remain unused. I thought this sounded wrong, but that's what I was told and convinced with an AT&T rep.

The reason for the upgrade date being 19months out is you on a 24month contract but can upgrade 5 months before it's up. Again, I'm not sure how this is news to you.

----------

Also if you are paying for features that you don't use, that isn't AT&T's fault. you always had the option to call and cancel features. They're not going to call you and tell you 'hey you arent using this, do you want to remove it?'

yes, i read it. why pay $250 bc you can't wait 30 whole days? it's a good reason why the thread was started lol.

My situation is the same as others in this thread with the 12 month upgrade cycle.

As others have mentioned, I'm wondering if they'll bring the 19 month upgrade closer as time passes. After preordering this morning, I also had a May 8, 2013 upgrade date. When I look this afternoon, it's now May 7th.

Maybe by the time the phones are shipped next week, the date will shift again?

I usually get an upgrade every 12 months, because of what I pay on that line. But after buying the 64 GB iPhone 4S, my next eligibility upgrade is May 8, 2013.

Either they've changed something, or I'll hopefully be eligible in October 2012.
Same here. Ive always upgraded once a year since 2007, I don't know why it changed to may 2013.

EDIT: Called and complained about being misinformed. Was told I should see a credit of $250 posted to my account as an over payment. :)

My eligibility date to upgrade is 11/16/2011. Should I be able to upgrade now without having to pay the $250 charge do you think? I was just going to wait until November 16th to save the $250 plus $18 fee, but if I can upgrade now I might do it.

You can try doing what OP did. Order the phone with the $250 charge then call and complain about being misinformed and get credited.

You may not get credited though.

Got my 4S today for $299 for White 32GB and mine also states upgrade on 5-2013 next time, so I guess AT&T switched to 18 months on all lines now, instead of 12 months on main line

You got credited anyway so now it's like you used fully subsidized upgrade and got your date moved back.

Yeah, I'm happier now even though I don't see the credit yet.

You might be able to use my story but I'm not sure how detailed their call logs are. Some people are getting lucky with pushed dates/credits but it really depends on which rep you get.

Yeah....Probably not worth the risk. I have a 32GB iPhone 4 with iOS 5 already on it, so I think I will just wait until Nov 16th.

That's the new AT&T upgrade policy. No matter how much you pay on each line, the upgrade dates are now 20 months for everyone.

Well, if it gets to be a month or so before the next phone comes out (assuming it is 12 months or more out) and I'm still not up for an upgrade I'll just move to Verizon. Easy as that.

Does anyone know when the early upgrade takes place?

A full upgrade is 20 months, but what about the early one?

I have been telling people that ATT (like Sprint ending their 12 month upgrade premiere program) has ended their 12 month upgrade cycle.

ATT started doing this in March or April 2011.

The reason it hasn't been widely reported is because the vast majority of users eligible for 12 month upgrades had been holding off until the iPhone announcement.

Since iPhone 4S preorders began, I knew this type of complaining about 12 month upgrade cycles ending would began. People simply do not listen or believe what people post.

This has been clearly discussed over in Howard Forums's ATT section. Android users over on the android forums also reported not been eligible for 12 month upgrades after they upgraded to say an Atrix or Inspire. Even waiting 3-4 months after using their Atrix or Inspire upgrade, their upgrade cycle is now set to around 18-20 months.

Sorry people just have to learn the hard way when the masses start realizing ATT is no longer willing to upgrade their most valued ($$$) users ever 12 months for their primary line.

I believe Verizon ended their new every 2 year thing this past winter also. Sprint doesn't have 12 month upgrades after people use their last upgrade. And ATT just did the same.

Could they change the upgrade cycle in the future? Maybe. But for now, they are treating primary and secondary lines the same in terms of upgrade cycles instead of giving the primary line the special 12 month upgrade cycle if you meet certain monthly revenue projections.

It used to be as soon as less than 60 days. Now ATT requires 6 months before the partial upgrade. Keep in mind, once you use their partial upgrade, you cannot do ANY (full or partial upgrade) for the next 20-22 months.

So if you use a partial upgrade for iPhone 4S (5th generation) (say $449), when iPhone 6th generation comes out in 2012, ATT will force you to buy at no-committement price and no partial upgrade pricing will be available at that time.

I know that for a fact since I was stupid enough to do the partila iphone 3GS upgrade back in 2009 and realize I couldn't get another partial upgrade for the iPhone 4 in 2012 and had to wait till I was fully eligible in 02/2012.

Wow...going to return the 4S and patiently wait for the next iPhone next summer or October. Def. not waiting until 2013. Ridiculous.

I don't know, you can just sell it and end up paying a $150-200 for the upgrade. Don't think that's totally bad. Or in my case, to get away from AT&T.

Here is the other thing. If you remember when the 3GS launched anyone who bought the 3G at launch wasn't going to be eligible. The internet caused a big stink and AT&T changed the upgrade date for those people. I image, if in fact we are ALL on 20 months now, that something similar will happen when the 5 comes out.

Those of you on 12 month upgrades in the past, did you check your upgrade date after ordering the 4? The reason I ask is maybe they quote everyone at 19 months but then slowly bring it down to 12 over the year.

What were you quoted when ordering the 4? 12 or 19 months?

12. Instantly, I'm 99% sure. It might have been a day or two though, but it was quick.

I honestly don't remember. I did check around June and it was 12 months to the day that I bought the 4, but I never check immediately after I placed the order.
