Does not compute.

I have used PDANet on a 3G and 4 very infrequently over the years on an AT&T unlimited data plan and have never been notified. Does PDANet hide tethering better, or have I just dodged a bullet?

Does anyone know for sure how AT&T detects it?

Is there a tethering app(s) that has never gotten the notice?

You have just dodged the bullet. Like we have stated, usage spikes are certain to get you noticed. Sporadic or infrequent usage is ok. Its just using it as a (or similar to) home connection will definitely get you noticed.

Pdanet emailed me back today saying they have updated the iphone app to 6.01 and will show shortly in cydia. Or you can add their repo they said:
http://pdanet.co then search and will show updated one.

I think that in the tethering argument - ice cream wouldn't be on the menu when you sat down.

What it boils down to is, I'm on your side with this one - I don't tether, because I don't pay to tether. If I wanted to tether, I would pay for it.

I would gladly pay for tethering - if any carrier offered a plan equivalent to what I have now. None do.

I have to have both domestic US and international data in an affordable and reasonable package. I have that today with my unlimited plan. There's no tethering option I can buy that works for me.

I'm a 3-5Gb/month user. I would not increase total consumption if I could tether, I would split it among different devices.

Say what you will about what we did or didn't agree to. To me it's no different than water. I pay for water by the gallon no matter how many facets it comes out of. Charge me a fee for an amount of data and let me use it any way I want.

That worked, thank you. I was wondering when it would be updated, because it still shows the Pdanet 4.36 in the Cydia app store. The direct source works fine though.

How? Explain to me why that analogy doesn't work for reasons other than "I want to tether without paying."

In my case I only want to "feed" myself. I have unlimited AT&T data and want to tether to my iPad mini. So I think of it like my iPhone being a fork, it's just a vehicle to get data into my mouth. And tethering my iPad mini would be like using a spoon instead and AT&T says "you can't eat that data with a spoon, you have you use only the fork we approved for you".

Why? It's the same data and its being used on a mobile device running the same iOS. I think you should be able to tether ONE device for free. That way it's basically the same thing.

----------

And I paid for unlimited food at the buffet. So my family eating from my plate is just them using the food I already paid for however I want.

This is a dumb analogy. An entire family can certainly eat more than just one person. Don't you see that? 1 person stuffing their face is far less than 4 people stuffing their face.

Unfortunately, your example is dumb as well. It was going fine until you said "I think you should be able to tether ONE device for free", after arguing that using multiple devices was like using different utensils. Why stop at 1 device? Do you only use 2 utensils? You never use a knife? You basically admitted that a part of you thinks tethering is wrong, so you would limit your acts.

Look, the bottom line is that these phone companies want to charge you twice for the same service. That is wrong in and of itself. Thankfully, as I said in my previous post (near the bottom of the previous page), Verizon made a deal to acquire Block C licenses that basically prohibits them from punishing us for using tethering apps. Given the fact that I don't know anyone on Verizon who has ever gotten busted for tethering (as much as 100GB a month), I think this is info is accurate.

The point is that if you only tether 1 device at a time, especially a mobile device, it should be virtually no difference to to AT&T. Wether I am using my iPhone 5 with unlimited data or using my iPad mini tether it should be no difference to AT&T in terms of simple data consumption. As opposed to your analogy where 5 people are using one data plan.

You're jumping to the conclusion that my analogy is using shared data. I'm on a standalone data package where I regularly consume 80 - 100GB a month via tethering. My wife is on a 2GB plan, and rarely consumes half of her allowance.

Ugh. This thread has turned into "who has the best analogy" and "your analogy sucks!" thread.

Who cares. Tether away, and if you get caught or you don't get caught, to each his own.

Or don't tether.

I don't care anymore.

Good. Don't go away mad, just go away.

To the rest of you guys, has anyone used the new TetherMe or MyWi and gotten the notice from AT&T?

lol.

What a great human being you are. That's what I love about the internet; it reveals people's true colors.

Who is that guy pictured? And what are my true colors? I said don't go away mad. I want you happy. I just want you happy somewhere else.

And for the record, I am a pretty great human being.

That's a disappointed Stephen A. Smith.

And you're right. I want the best for you too.

I wish you could be somewhere else as well. Frolicking. :)

att sucks. we pay for unlimited data.. they shoudnt be telling us how we can use it

i always argue the point that i pay $39/month still for a voice plan that i don't use. until they allow me to pay for data only, i'm going to feel like i'm getting hosed. i'd rather just pay $80 for 10GB of data and nothing else (i don't have any SMS plan, as i use iMessage and Google Voice to text friends)

And I paid for unlimited food at the buffet. So my family eating from my plate is just them using the food I already paid for however I want.

If you're tethering for your own use, it's like you're eating the same exact food; you're not feeding your family from your plate--You're getting up and eating at another table.

Tethering, complaints about AT&T and poor analogies. Where have I seen these before? Oh, yeah, in this thread.

Too bad some people can't deal with reality and think complaining on a discussion forum will change things.

1. Pay AT&T what they charge
2. Switch carriers.
3. Tether with or preferably without 'uncertain' feelings.

So have you (or anyone else) tried PdaNet and it worked on OS6? Right now the spreadsheet here says that version 6.01 does not work and "Will deactivate your phone." On the other hand, PdaNet's website here says it does work. I'm a little daunted by that "Will deactivate your phone" thing to try myself...

I'm not sure why it says that it "may deactivate your phone". I for one have to say it works flawlessly on iOS 6.1 with pdanet 6.01. They may be talking about the old version of 5.36. No problems, so far so good.

Ip5 on 6.1 and PDA net AT&T LTE grandfathered plan and I tried PDA net last night with the update and it worked fine to my iPad 2.

Oddly no, LTE is usually 30+ mbs and when I tethered it was around 7 or so. I only tested it for a minute though to see if it worked.
