My release day iPad 1 and release day iPad 3 have no issues and came in perfect cosmetic condition. Everything here is way overblown. You have understand forums like this *cater* to people who are having issues -- so it seems like most people are experiencing them.

It also attracts obsessive compulsive people (I mean the real deal, not just throwing that term around). In addition to going through 15 iPads to find a perfect one, they likely touch their doorknob 5 times before they leave the house, and turn around in a circle ten times every time they use the toilet.

I agree with your statement. I had no problems with my original iPad and my new one looks fine as well. Does the screen take on a different hue in different light - yes, but so does everything else. Right now sitting inside my screen looks white, white with a tad bluish tint. Outside on a cloudy day, the screen does take on a bit of rosiness. But I also wear transition lenses glasses which may play into the whole change of color.

I know that I could drive myself crazy trying out and returning 5 iPads. I guess I could consider myself lucky - lucky that either I got one of the few perfect screen iPads or lucky that if I didn't, I can't tell the difference and it doesn't bother me. It's been enough of a struggle trying to find the perfect case...

We speak english here.

If people dont complain and voice opinions about these things they dont change.

iPads are too heavy. Period.

Do you have any appreciation of the state of the art cutting edge technology that Apple have pioneered in the iPad? Some technological bars raised so high we have reached a pinacle. Oh no, the fact its a hair thicker and a few nickels heavier is somehow an epic failure on Apple's part. Opinions and all that are fine but get some perspective here. If you cant see where you have failed here then you need help.

Another rediculous comment

Mark my words. Apple will release a thinner and lighter ipad.

Then you'll be posting how great it is and how you just dont understand how you lived with the heavier ipads.

iPads are too heavy. Watch how popular the 7" iPad becomes.

----------

Maybe you can't read english, because if you couldn't read that then you suck at english!

Though it's hard when you have nothing to add to a discussion, perhaps you could try to stay on topic!

Thank you!

Well done, this post was understandable.

Your previous post, the one I complained about, was not. Try rereading before posting and also not using slang.

The ipad 2 is also too heavy....Just to be clear.

I get that the present form-factor is accepted because that's all there is in the class but that does not change the fact that many, if asked, would say its still too heavy.

Ideally the weight of a magazine is the goal but even chopping another pound off would be great.

Chopping another pound off? The thing is only 1.4 lbs. You're asking for something that weighs less than a Kindle but still has all of the features of the iPad. Not happening in the next decade, maybe two.

Thought people might like to hear...

I'm the guy who started this thread. Back then I'd had two iPads (serial numbers DL) and both screens had a pretty uniform and subtle pink tint to the whites, especially in natural lighting. I returned both.

This morning, after waiting a month for problems in production to be worked out, I took delivery of a third (serial number DM) and it's a very different beast. Quite clearly a different screen.

This time the whites on the screen are decidedly warm. I'd stop short of saying yellow. But in order of pure whiteness to my eyes, I'd start with my iPhone 4, then my MacBook Pro, then the iPad.

There's also slightly uneven backlighting, with the top third of the screen looking a notch darker than the rest. The corners have a slightly "pinched" appearance but that's only if you're looking very hard.

I might be paranoid but the screen's not quite as sharp as the other two, if that's even possible. It's like somebody has applied a very slight blur filter to the entire thing.

However, I can live with a warm screen (and of course it only looks warm alongside other screens--in everyday use it appears white). So this one is a keeper, I think. :)

There was glue residue on the back when I took it out of the box, and a slight nick in the metal near the headphone jack. God knows how this is even possible. Quality control really has dropped through the floor.

I don't seem to recall any price increases in the iPad. In fact, the price stays the same while the feature list grows longer every year.

And can someone please explain, how is it that people who return a few iPads or complain about QC are the "OCD minority", while simultaneously driving up the price with our returns?

People are clearly abusing Apple's Return Policy with their own OCD issues. The price of the iPad may have remained constant, but have their "quality" parts been sacrificed from these people making 5+ returns?

I am 100% certain that you will return this iPad. Your OCD will not let you keep it.

I can't help but wonder how some people can buy things like cars and houses, given their absolute desire for perfection.

I feel sorry for those who have to live and deal with those people on a daily basis!

----------

Theory 1: The iPad is incredibly well-made and so close to an 'ideal object' that people get hung up on any perceivable variation or inconsistency, regardless of how irrelevant.

Theory 2: The iPad is incredibly well-made, so far out of the bounds of what most people could conceive of and build themselves, and thus is subconsciously intimidating to people. By finding some kind of fault with it, this dissonance is alleviated.

Houses, on the other hand (along with many other goods), have all kinds of variation (nobody is checking the walls for squareness to thousandths of an inch) and can have all kinds of paint slapped on them or junk strewn around to make it seem comfortable (slovenly).

You sounded reasonable until you mentioned you have no choice but to buy 5 and return 4 all at the same time.

That is inappropriate. Maybe buy 2 at a time... But 5 just to find 1 perfect one??? Come on.

R-sparks

Greetings from across the pond, ol Chap. Thanks for your help in driving up the cost of already expensive toys. Will you still return 5 if number 3 is perfect?

Your approach is costing Apple which in turn passes it on to the consumer (ME) for your personal monetary gain.

Now that just ain't right!!!

Thank You! That's probably why they changed AppleCare... wonder what is next when these people keep abusing Apple's already Gracious Return Policy.

I am 100% certain that you will return this iPad. Your OCD will not let you keep it.

On the contrary -- I posted my reply to indicate that it was possible to find a decent iPad.

Also, please don't keep calling people OCD. You don't even know what the term means, or the chaos such an illness causes in people's lives. I don't have OCD but I know people who do and it's not nice.

Hows about we start suggesting aggressive rude people like you have antisocial personality disorder?

Actually, I ended-up placing an order for just one. This should have been obvious from what I posted.

Uh, I have OCD. I could care less what people think, but I won't.

Yes, I see what you mean. Apple's losing money hand over fist. It's clearly running at a loss.

NO WAIT — HANG ON.... Apple is one of the richest corporations in existence.

There are actually different grades of people who complain about screen quality.

There's people like me, who are fussy. We'll call these GRADE 1. We have experience of LCD screens and know that if a screen is tinted pink, or overtly yellow, then it ain't right and they deserve better for a piece of hardware costing so much money.

People who are GRADE 2 notice a flaw with their iPad that doesn't affect everyday use, such as a slightly wonky backlight. Some of them can live with the issue (I could) but others choose to exercise their right to return the product (remember that in European countries like the UK we have laws that give us the right to return goods, which you don't appear to have in the US).

GRADE 3 people are the ones who use special test patterns, or who examine their iPads under a blanket in a dark room, or who hold it at oblique angles to try and find dust under the screen. Sometimes the faults they see are only visible in a photograph taken of the iPad. Some of the things posted here have been quite amusing. I think these people are causing themselves a world of pain, in my humble opinion. If you look for problems, you'll find them.

I upgraded to the 2 in order the get the 3G that I'd passed over with the original iPad, so I really have no interest in upgrading again, but having had a good play with the iPad 3, I am really surprised to say that the screen is MUCH better than the screen on the iPad 2. It's really gorgeous.

Just because Apple is rich doesn't mean that the customer still takes a hit when people abuse the system. I'm sure Apple's Goals are probably in the red when it comes to OCD people making 25+ returns. Besides, neither you nor I know how Apple's business model is calculated.

You keep posting the same thing. It's Apple's policy. If they are losing money with it or want to change it, they will. They are big boys who make the most money in the world. Prices haven't gone up. Give it a rest. By the way did you get a New iPad? If you didn't you have no clue what you are talking about. If you did and received a good screen, good on you. But there are buyers that received multiple defective units. I received two. The Apple employees conceded the screen defects immediately. The third one still isn't that good, but better. Getting multiple defective units shouldn't be the norm and it appears to have happened to multiple people. When this happens people post about it. You are are as fixated on this topic and as bad as the people who have returned more than a couple iPads.

So you admit we know nothing about this situations yet you still make suggestions?

Is there anything else you don't know a single thing about that you want to confidently assert?

How am I doing harm to Apple by "calling-out" those who are returning multiple iPads? How is this "as bad"?

Where can I get all these calibration tools to check to see if my screen is "OK"?

You are neither doing harm to or helping Apple. They couldn't care less about you. You are as bad because your OCD compulsion to post the same repetitive point is obnoxious and adds nothing to honest discussion of the issue. Those that keep returning are taking advantage of a generous return policy. That is obnoxious as well, but allowable as is your turgid re posting over and over of the same point.

It's obnoxious because the number of threads that are currently discussing the matter. I have every right to discuss debate the matter. I say and will always say that the problem is with the disorder, not Apple.

You are mad because you are one of the problems with Apple. How many have you returned?

You don't discuss and debate.....you regurgitate the same point again and again and again and that is obnoxious. Threads continue because the problem continues. I returned two, both of which the Apple reps said were not within spec and were defective. I have kept the third which is better, not great and which they claim was within spec. End of my return saga. Never had to do that with multiple Apple and other consumer electronics. Others seem to be having the same issues so they post about it. Some are ridiculous on returns. Others like you are equally nonsensical in saying there is no problem.

Now answer my question. Did you even buy a new iPad? Cause if you didn't you have no idea what you are talking about.
