I don't know how one officially complains to Apple.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Keep a note of device serial numbers though -- it'd be funny if they sent out the same iPad for your second and third orders!

Returned iPads are sent back to the factory, tested, given a new battery and I believe a new back, and stamped with a different serial number before being sent back out. So no, you'll never get back an iPad with the same serial number as the one you returned.

i'll be paying ~$770 for the tablet. and you're telling me i should not expect to get a flawless tablet?!

How much would it have to be for you to not expect that? The point is that 'flawless' isn't any kind of meaningful standard; it's just a weasel word that covers both 'functional screen' and 'obsessive colour calibration weirdos'. See below.

besides, the ipad is considered the defacto 'rolls-royce' of tablets both in terms of price and reputation anyway.

It's actually one of the best values in tablets out there and sits in the middle of tablet price ranges. Glad to clear that up for you.

i don't care if i'm buying a tablet, laptop, TV or other consumer good(s). I expect that if the product has issues, then the manufacturer is responsible for providing a defect-free replacement or a full refund.

People are arguing that Apple has an obligation to satisfy their customer's standards, even if those standards exceed what Apple feels like selling. On these forums, a refund is unthinkable - one is entitled to get a molecular-perfect iPad if that's what one wants, just because one spent a few hundred dollars.

Exactly what I was thinking. bufffilm's quote makes it sound like Apple is refusing to offer a full refund. Well, last I checked, you could return an iPad for a full refund within 14 days of purchase, so if you're unsatisfied with the screen quality, then well, the solution is obvious, isn't it?

They are responsible for satisfying the customers standards because those standards are built up on the hype that they made about the screen, the screen is now the major selling point of the device, there is nothing in the specifications table that says tints/deadpixels/horrible viewing angles are to be expected as is not a defect, just like how sony puts in a notice that deadpixels and mura lines are NOT a defect on the PSVita.

Returned mine yesterday.

Still have IPAD 2.

Ipad 3 = too warm for my liking

Ipad 3 = to heavy for my liking

Next year im sure both issues will be addressed.

The screen was definitely pretty.. but not enough to outway the 2 gripes i had with it.

You're complaining over 50gm. If so you REALLY need to hit the gym.

I returned my iPad as well. Never even opened it. Sat on the kitchen counter for about a week before I finally decided to return it.

All these threads that keep popping up just made me paranoid.
Bought two iPad 1's that were opened and enjoyed without thinking twice about anything. Bought an iPad 2 that I dove right in.

iPad 3 though... just couldn't do it. Not with so many threads of owners having problems. Scared the crap out of me. I kept picturing myself opening up the iPad and having this piss yellow screen to look at.

Eh... I'm sure before the summer is over I'm going to get one...

You're joking, right?

Returning 5 iPads???

R-sparks

Greetings from across the pond, ol Chap. Thanks for your help in driving up the cost of already expensive toys. Will you still return 5 if number 3 is perfect?

Your approach is costing Apple which in turn passes it on to the consumer (ME) for your personal monetary gain.

Now that just ain't right!!!

Oh yes you are right. Apple is sooooo broke. Only a billion in the bank.

Ipad 3 = too heavy for my liking

So glad you mentioned this!

The iPad 3 is really ********** heavy. I get the same kind of hand/arm ache I get when using it that I do when I'm reading a big, heavy hardback book. It's tiring and tiresome.

Never believe anything you read on the Internet. Seriously.

This might be true but we were talking about ordering refurb models. Will they refurb a refurb? Or just sent it out to somebody else until they find an individual who's happy with it? I know what I'd do in that situation, and anybody who's worked in a supermarket will too -- everything sells eventually, even the damaged goods.

Also, I'm reasonably sure that refurbs don't involve that much effort. They clean it up, thoroughly test it (likely automated), and ensure the firmware is as-new. Anything else would be unnecessary expense, especially for a product that they're selling for a lot of money less than the as-new price.

People are told there could be physical blemishes before they order. If they were opening these things up then people who bought refurb Macbooks wouldn't end-up with unmentioned additional amounts of RAM, for example, as they do.

The OP isn't unjustified in saying what he said. It all makes sense.

I bought my 3rd gen iPad and received it on launch day. After using a few days I started noticing the same problems. It had a grayish tinge on the left side, and a brighter blob or pink on the top left corner. I tried to to ignore it, and noticed it was worse under natural lighting. After the two weeks I've decided to get it sorted out and am now waiting for a replacement.

True, for some people this isn't going to be much of an issue. But others are more sensitive, especially for those who will use apps that have plenty of white backgrounds where the problem is going to be much more noticeable. But then I also did this as a matter of principle. First, I've owned the previous two versions of the iPad and none has this problem. Second, I did this because I'm concerned that Apple quality control might be slipping. I've noticed that quite a few iPad 3 display units I've seen in the stores are showing signs of irregular white balance, compared to the iPad 2s they have in the same store. Many of us are aware that Apple has reverted to Samsung to produce the panels, when Sharp and LG couldn't meet Apple's quality specs. This, is on top of the fact that the iPad retina display is known to be pushing technology to its limits. I wonder if, in the desperation to push the new iPad into the market, if Tim Cook has decided to overlook some of these quality concerns, assuming that the higher resolution will compensate for the white balance problem.

I don't seem to recall any price increases in the iPad. In fact, the price stays the same while the feature list grows longer every year.

And can someone please explain, how is it that people who return a few iPads or complain about QC are the "OCD minority", while simultaneously driving up the price with our returns?

I think ultimately, they will have to adjust their return policy - either build the extra costs of returns into the margin, or make it harder to claim a legitimate return.

The profit margins were pretty high with the iPad 2, enough to cover returns with a fairly liberal policy. Now they've substantially increased production. (and theoretically trimmed QC costs). That means some returns are inevitable. But the profit margins should be even higher than last year, because of the increase in production volume...suppliers always discount bulk orders. And if anyone can negotiate that, it's Tim Cook. And if ever there was a big bulk order, it was for the parts of the new iPad.

I see zero damage to their bottom line no matter how you slice it, which is somewhat disheartening for the end consumer, because it allows for lower QC standards while maintaining profitability.

I bought an iPad 3 in march and LOVED it. I used it for the first week and never noticed or saw anything wrong with screen uniformity, backlight bleed, battery problems, etc. Then I started browsing these forums which in turn made me start going out of my way to look for "defects" that I normally would have never thought to look for. Turns out I started noticing backlight bleed, pinkish/yellow screen color, screen uniformity issues etc.

I hate to say it but reading many of the threads on this forum opened my eyes to these "defects" which I would have never noticed on my own.

Unfortunately I ended up returning my iPad because of this and if I ever buy an iPad again in the future, I will be sure to never visit these forums again.

LOL, yeah boy need a wheel barrel to carry these new iPad and I use mine to bake bread!

Too warm and to heavy! These kind of comments just make my laugh. I mean really! hehehe Jeez !

My plan is to buy five of them on my credit card, then choose the best one out of them, before returning the other four for a refund. This is a crazy thing to do but I can't see how I have much choice.

That sounds like a Good Idea...Sure u will find one with a Flawless skin from the five. Good Idea. Infact I have been asking people on what could be the best idea to ensure, that the new iPad I buy does not have these kind of tints I wanted some pointers. But I dont live in a country where there is any refund given if you dont wanna keep the Apple Product, I wish I could use this Idea...

Such a nonsense thread. If iPad 3 is too big and heavy for you just buy a Kindle and shut the door on your way out.

If people dont complain and voice opinions about these things they dont change.

iPads are too heavy. Period.
