If you add a thick case, to many people it is a significant reduction in aesthetics, portability and handling, which is why it's not universally done. Personally I don't like it when I see the phone wrapped up in so much protection - it feels like a regression towards older "brick" phones.
Thick cases have their use cases however - when I go hiking I snap one on. However in daily use I prefer to keep my devices as portable and good looking as I can. This varies depending on the individual of course. The tradeoff of having a "perfect condition" device for sale in having to handle a bulky phone for at least a year is not something I'm willing to make.

I always wondered why people were so passionate about people getting Outterbox's. I have no problem with their cases and dropped my 5S many times without a scratch. Yes they add thickness but offers complete protection. In fact my case is being delivered tomorrow! No one offers better drop protection than them.
When it comes to trade in phones next sept. I won't a gave a single scratch and guarantee the highest resale value.
