While I can't stand Kanye and his music has been subpar for like a decade, this move is kinda smart. He reported to make just over $2 Million in 24 hours on Stem Player sales alone. None of which will go to streaming services.

Here's the thing. This "Success" is at his fans cost.

He's whining about being "ripped off" by the industry yet that a exactly what he's doing to his fans.

Or (and this is according to Ye) he could have taken the $100m he claims Apple offered him and his fans could listen to the album at no extra cost.

This isn't about the fans, it's all about him and his greed.

Yeah, which is it. He was getting ripped off by Apple Music so he had to move to this weird device of his, or he was getting a ton of money from Apple Music but he didn’t want it for some reason.

Ye said that artists "get just 12% of the money the industry makes," and that it's "time to free music from this oppressive system."
So... let's release them from oppression by making future albums cost $200 because they need a special one-off device? Dude.. there's a difference between releasing on a platform that takes "less of a cut" and creating a new platform that is far more expensive for those who may actually want to hear your music (full disclosure, I'm not one of them).

So... I read this as "I'm tired of being ripped off so now I want to rip off my fans"

Seems to be just as "out there" and misguided as anything else this guy has ever dreamed up.

Don't really care that the "latest" will not be widely available via traditional channels. The peeps who dig it, and want it, will certainly use his method of distribution, but for the rest of us who dig hip-hop / r&b (not gangsta rap)... we could give a $&!+

I don't disagree with his position on the "split" issue - artists have been getting screwed since the debut of "recorded media" sales began, by the industry as a whole.

Creatives in general have been getting bent over. There is always someone out there trying to make money off of your creation.....

Kanye is insane.
I’ve heard others label him as an ‘idiot savant’, which in some ways, I do think he is to a degree. But I also think that he’s not properly and/or formally been clinically diagnosed with mental disorders that he probably has had for the majority of his lifetime.

That said, I don’t consider him a ‘business entrepreneur’, but rather somebody that has just had connections in various industries that’s put him in the limelight.

It has to be said, suddenly, 200$ for interactive device with new (whatever) album seems like an expensive device on forum for people who pay 1000$ for a phone with functions that can be bought for 350$ (on Android) and are ready to pay 100$ for +128Mb memory upgrade, too.

Isn't that so?

Kanye West, now known officially as "Ye," does not plan to release his next album, "Donda 2," on streaming services that include Apple Music and Spotify, opting instead for a proprietary platform.

Ye said today on Instagram that "Donda 2" will be available only on the Stem Player, a $200 device that was released with the initial "Donda" album pre-installed. The Stem Player is designed to allow users to "customize any song" with controls for vocals, drums, bass, effects, and more.

As an explanation for why the album will not be coming to major streaming platforms, Ye said that artists "get just 12% of the money the industry makes," and that it's "time to free music from this oppressive system."

The Stem Player was developed in partnership with Kano Computing, and Ye is ramping up production to meet demand. Ye said that there are 67,000 units available, and 3,000 units are being manufactured each day.

Ye has in the past claimed that an album will be exclusive only to release it on streaming services later. Back in 2016, he said that his album "The Life of Pablo" would "never never never" come to Apple Music, only to release it on Apple Music a month later.

"Donda 2" is expected to launch next week, on February 22, and the Stem Player can be purchased online.

At last, something good about Apple Music!

So you are seeing value in this $200 device with an album attached to it? $1000 for a smart computer in your pocket has a lot of value for millions of individuals.

I saw a demo of the device and it actually looks pretty cool. But I don't remix music, nor do I listen to Kanye's music. I don't know how well this device would work with other types of music. I'm definitely not in the target audience for this product.

Smart move to tie it to the release of an album to encourage sales, though.

With everyone trashing it, I am posting to say that I am impressed. This is an innovative new way to enjoy music. I think we will see more of this, combined with AI in the future. I don't know that this device will be successful, but I think some people will love it. It's a new format and I think historic.

Everyone commenting on Donde (3 decent songs) or the device (insane) but the real issue is that Kanye is trying something to help the artists gets bigger slice. We are freaking out that developers only get 70% when artists are in a system where they make 12%. Probably time to rethink the current system…Apple offers an artist 70% that would be a pretty good deal.
He’s trying to get himself a bigger slice of the pie
