I know the prices for upgrades (and yes, they are expensive). I want to see which 1TB drive you suggested I could buy for 1/4 the price.

Crucial P1 - 145 Euros
Intel SSD 660p - 114
Samsung 970 Evo - 206
Samsung 981 - 209
AData XPG - 161

These SSD are roughly comparable to the Mac Mini SSDs (MBPs may have higher spec-ed modules). At less than 1/4 th the price

Now, I get it, Apple was always more expensive in comparison. And that was fine. The Powerbooks, for example, were literally without true opponent.
These days though, this is not true any more. In particular, I can't see why Apples SSD - and to a lesser extent - RAM prices are so extraordinarily inflated. I just don't see the value in those offerings. Apple uses Samsung SSDs. Good ones, yes. But not >4x. There is literally no justification for those asking prices.
In the light of this the soldered on SSDs and RAM make sense: You can't upgrade yourself, so you are forced pay those prices - the opposite of customer friendly.

If I compare the upgrade from the standard 128 GB Mac Mini with the Intels 660p as stated above: its 960 Euros vs 114 - 8.4x the price. Yes, the Intel is a bit slower, but not by much.

The Adata SPG Gammix S11 Pro 1 TB is rated at 3550/2800 read/write, which is on par or exceeds the Apple 1 TB SSD in the Mini.
Available at 176, that is a 5.4x upcharge.

How poorly that reflects the field. That would never fly in other disciplines. Imagine a BS in psychology calling themself a psychologist or a doctor who refuses to do CE claiming they are still qualified to practice.

Is that the issue? Should I say he is an engineer that isn’t qualified to do engineering?
You can say whatever you like. Today’s graduating physical therapists are doing barely masters level work, yet somehow managed to convince at least my state that they’re in a doctorate program. Imagine, your physical therapist introducing himself as Dr. so-and-so. It confuses patients, and dilute the meeting of the title. That’s just the way it is. I recommend judging people on their merits, tempering your outrage, and moving on.

And you can play football on your college team, but that does not make you a professional football player.
Making the football roster does not require a multi year course of study finishing with an accredited degree. If you’re going to play in false equivalency land, I guess we’re done. Have a great day.

Personally, I think iOS took a nose dive after Scott Forstall left. I understand that he was the main guy behind iOS being what it is. He may have been difficult to manage, but Jobs understood his value and contribution and made it work. Every year, progress was made, until he left. Then it was flat this, and tiny feature that.

If this CPU architect guy is anything like that, Apple could lose its hardware advantage. As it is, Snapdragon SoCs have almost caught up.

Things aren't looking up for Apple at the moment.

Agreed. Scott has the passion to drive iOS forward. To lose him because Jony and he didn’t see eye to eye was gut-wrenching at the time. In hindsight, it’s a lot worse.

I’m confused. Are you saying it’s ok to claim a title you don’t deserve or not?

You just compared graduating from an engineering program with being accepted onto a college football team. Those are unfair comparisons. Compare the engineering graduate with the college athlete graduate. The athlete put thousands of hours into four to five years, and they have more experience being a player than most people in college have in their major. If they can't be called a professional football player until they get paid to play football than I don't see how you can call someone an engineer until someone pays them to do that job.

Everybody is replaceable. Doesn't mean you throw out people who are very much improving the company. Compare Apple when Tim Cook started with Apple today. Today, Apple has three times the share price, three times the revenue, three times the profit. Tim Cook will be replaced when he is hit by a truck or retires. Until then, Apple will do anything to keep him.
I strongly recommend you watch an old Steve job video
where he technically predicted the future without even knowing
he was just answering questions in an interview and he talked about many things
but what he was talking about is the new apple today
things you should and shouldn't do
everything he said that a company shouldn't do is exactly what Tim and apple are doing today

apple has " three times the share price, three times the revenue, three times the profit"
thanks to the name and reputation that Steve builded
that is the same reputation that Tim is destroying
apple is living off its name and reputation

it was Steve that made apple successful and famous
sorry but I respectfully disagree about your comment that Tim is improving apple
I think is all the opposite, his driving apple to the ground
it might still be a successful company but is not even the shadow of its former self
look at the software and hardware quality

I will also keep anyone that make me money and triple my income
but then one day I wake up and find an empty store with no costumers
they finally figure out they are being ripped off

just wait until another company dethrone apple
samsung is getting better also Huawei, it will take time
the only reason why people buy iPhone is because iOS
the only reason why people buy Macs is because Mac OS
many people don't like android or windows
but they agree that probably the other company has better hardware and prices

Is this some kind of haiku or something?
I been called a rapper , a poet many things here
but never what you mentioned
Thanks for the complement, I will add that one to my collection

you have a hispanic name I guess you should know easily that I speak Spanish
sorry for my broken down English , I never finished school and the little bit of English that I know
I learned on the streets of USA
that's why my grammar is also so horrible

You write almost like you're writing a poem. That's okay. :)

Gerard Williams III, lead designer of Apple's custom iOS chips from A7 to A12X, has departed the company, according to CNET. While no indication of a change has been made on his LinkedIn profile, it does offer a glimpse into his design prowess.

....

He came to Apple with a splash, as the A7 was Apple's first 64-bit CPU core.

To our editor:

Apple's first 64-bit CPU core is the IBM G5 in the PowerMac G5 which they helped develop. I guess since we're using "Apple's" as in possession and fully designed in-house it would be correct, yet Apple designs a lot of hardware yet doesn't build nearly as much as they design in-house.

Architects are a lot less important in CPU design than you’d think. (Not that they aren’t important, but everybody is replaceable, and Apple’s advantage is primarily in design, not architecture).
Well MacOS, iOS have great architecture. So does these chips, they are the best mobile ARM processors in the world.

Man, it's going to be open season for Qualcomm engineers…

Like a buck can be discerned from a doe by its antlers, engineers are given away by their thick glasses, flannel shirts, and lustrous hipster facial hair.

LMAO .. So on point ... this just cracks me up ... can't wait to see your puns on a future Apple ad!

And unfortunately, as much as I LOVE my iPhone and the Mac ... each has remained stagnant in real powerful features under the hood for efficiency and power users can really take hold of.

3yrs after giving us the Touch Bar, Federighi is giving us an OS that has Dark Mode and rebranded and grouped the keyboard shortcuts for screenshot types.

Why is Apple keeping Mansfield around for? Is he really consulting or doing something OR is this a major fear protection tactic?!

I for one sure hope that his departure, when confirmed, isn't health related.

It is only in the past year that NVMe prices have dropped. When Apple launched the 2016 MBPs their pricing was fair since they had some of the fastest drives in the planet and much faster than what Samsung was selling. Should Apple drop their prices a little? Sure. But they know that people are still willing to pay whatever they ask.

That is difficult to say, also it is more of a political question i am generally more interested in tech, and from that perspective Apple with such a small software team has been able to write some world class OS and Chips.

The a12 architecture isn’t all that different than everyone else’s arm chips. Where they kick ass is in the chip design.
A12 one on one is superior to every ARM processors out there hands down, A12 currently for some tests beats Intel i7 in benchmarks, which other ARM processor in Androids do you know is anywhere close to that?

Always find your insights on these topics interesting. Would it be fair to say, then, that the Ax chips aren't doing anything truly unique but that their strength is in a series of smaller designs decisions, all made well?

In my opinion, yes. Of course we don’t know everything about these chips, so maybe there’s some weird architectural thing going on that nobody has noticed.

No. I agree. This is because the chip design is great, not because the chip architecture is better than competition.

There is a difference between chip design and chip architecture.

I wonder if these people leaving are going to different companies or just retiring from work.

He's probably burned out from having to develop a new chip every year that essentially has to be a differentiating feature of the iPhone/iPad product lines.

Um ... just remember the world lass OS creators (of OSX and iOS) was born from engineers working for Jobs at NeXT. They're ALL long gone from Apple! This is why you may read from time to time to bring Forstall back (he and another pretty much created the original compiler and another genius created Swift and well he's gone too ... first to Tesla and now free agent. I cannot recall his name but Apple should REALLY bring him back.
