Meh.

Buy X. Sell it. Buy X Plus.

Best of all worlds.

I bought the X.
Best phone I have ever owned.

Will sell it next year and get the X Plus and get the best phone experience ever TODAY and for another 364 days while others wait.

Wrong. You have a big notch on your phone, insecure FaceId, and a strange aspect ratio for landscape videos...

People seem to be forgetting that the iPhone X is the new flagship. It has all the latest and greatest tech Apple could fit into phone.

What will be the difference in the so called plus version of this phone next year? A bigger phone with a bigger screen and that’s it? I guess they’re going the google Pixel route. Both small and large phones have the same tech.

I still think they’re going to make a smaller phone and not a larger one

Whatever keeps this 19.5:9 ratio of iPhone x. But need one in the 5 inch factor, 5.8 (current) and 6.5 (bigger but close to plus models).... But keep ratio the same, and have a smaller phone... I am happy with a 4.7, but if I can get a slightly bigger screen in a smaller footprint, great!!
And keep the smallest ratio screen with LCD to move the SE folks to that model...

OR a 4.7 inch with the 19.5:9 ratio but bezeless, new iphone x design

Any reason to keep this aspect ratio which doesn’t suit any standard? Videos taken from the same phone will be lose content when displayed on the same phone.

If the news that Apple is scaling back iPhone 8 production is true in favor of the X and 8+, then it just means that a lot of people prefer the bigger size.

It’s not as simple. The camera on the plus is a big factor for people choosing the bigger size.

I also fully sympathize with those for whom none of these arguments holds true, and believe Apple should keep an SE-sized model around for as long as possible. Whether it should be a bezel-less one will be determined by the marketplace which, as others have noted, is increasingly going for bigger phones, even for not-so-big hands.
The only problem is that marketplace isn’t asked on comparable grounds with the 7, 8, and X.
Updating these models with the newest tech and spending insane amounts of money on marketing does not set a levels playing field, as people often want what’s new, and not having a SE form factor choice limits the voice of the crowd wanting smaller phones.

As an user of a iPhone 5S I do not see a need to upgrade to an SE as the new features I would get is limited.
I would still not have 3D Touch, not any upgrade to the display what so ever, same speakers, and same first gen Touch ID.

And as the speed of the hardware in the 5S still is viable and not sluggish the only gain would be the speed improvements and a better rear facing camera.

So if we should let the market decide atleast make the competition fair and stop putting in “last year’s” tech, otherwise people would not per vice it as an upgrade but a sidestep

You’re not forced to zoom the video into the corners/notch, you can watch it pillar boxed. The downside is then it’s like watching on a 5.0” device, due to the narrow display on the X giving you less height when you’re in landscape.

But the X Plus would make pillar boxed 16:9 video the same size as as older Plus models, 5.5” on the diagonal. Then if you do zoom in, it’s kinda huge—but then some content is lost on the top and bottom, and of course on the left and right due to (mostly) the notch, and the rounded corners.
That's the point exactly. A large screen that actually works best at as a 5.0” device.
Apple has the UI/UX wrong this time.

A LOT of people will choose the LCD version just because of price alone. I like OLED but in all honesty, there was nothing wrong with Apple's LCD panels. They still look good to me. My iPad Pro still looks amazing without OLED. I guarantee you won't get dual camera on the LCD one. Apple isn't stupid.

LCD only looks good until you use an OLED, the same way 1080p is best if you haven’t watched 4K. I too have an iPad Pro but videos and images look a lot better on my 2 year old phone with an OLED.

I’m sorry but do you really know people that did that? If so they need to put the kool aid down.

I’ve had regular size phones while my wife has has plus size phones. I bought the X and she just got the 8 Plus.

The iPhone X that I have now and the iPhone 7 do not take that drastically different photos. Or my wife’s phones vs mine.

These devices are all so great we are DEFINITELY at the point of diminishing returns. There is just NOT an astronomical difference in what any of them do from one another.

My point is this... stop obsessing over specs on a sheet and all these tech reviews that have to justify their jobs and look a real world differences.

If you adore the regular size get it! Don’t buy a phone you don’t like because of a .03 improvement in camera quality.

I know people who did that - me. I love the portrait mode on the plus model and there is image stabilisation. There are a lot of folks who did that just for the camera. I think once you get used to the big screen you generally don’t go back.

Can someone do the calculations on the physical size of the X Plus? Would it be basically the same dimensions as the current plus, just all screen?

The X’s usable screen is definitely not as big as the 8 plus. In fact it is more closer to the 8. The phone is 18:9 in aspect ratio which means if you want to see the full video it will have a letterbox to avoid cropping. Apps like Netflix display full screen but there is definite cropping of the video. I find that really annoying although most people haven’t realised that or at least don’t mind it. Watch this video.

Only costs a couple of nice coffees per week.
Now it’ll be only a couple of meals per week.

People will starve themselves for a phone.
It’s sad. And ironically the company is named after an edible fruit. Lol

This was one of the biggest factors I went with 8 plus including the notch and Face ID. I am not sure how this 18.5:9 aspect ratio makes sense to anyone who loves to watch videos on their phone. The whole pillar boxing makes the phone screen smaller than it is. I bet the X is a great phone but the dimensions don’t make for a great experience.

The X Plus will give you 5.5” 16:9 video just like the 8 Plus, in a physical size identical to the 8 Plus. I guess that’s the phone you’re wanting.

But a lot of people think the Plus form factor is just too big. Those users prefer an SE, 4.7” iPhone 8 or the slightly larger X.

Not sure how any of that supports your statement that “Apple has the UI/UX wrong this time.”

The rumored X Plus will restore 6/7/8 Plus sized 5.5” 16:9 video in a physical package identical in size to the 8 Plus. But for people who think the Plus size is too big, there’s the current X or even smaller, the 8 or even SE. Something for everybody!

To be quite honest I think the X is a tad on the small side, but this 'Plus' model would be too big to handle properly. If it were closer to 6.2 inches it would be better.
If the iPhone X Plus is scaled proportionally (6.5/5.8, ie, 1.12x), it would have a width of 79.5 mm. The current Plus models have a width of 78.1 mm. I'd say that whoever is fine with the 6/7/8 Plus size will most likely also be fine with the the X Plus size.

I get the 6.5" and 5.8", but why not make the LCD one smaller (maybe 5")? Make it more of a budget version, to replace the SE form factor. Guess that just makes too much sense.
While there definitely is potential at the SE physical size, it is quite possible that there is significantly more potential at this new 6.2" size.

  • Every single iPhone X 'review' I have seen has stated that the notch becomes a non-issue in real-life use, which I can confirm from personal experience.
  • Except for twins (and the occasional very similar looking siblings), FaceID has been very hard to fool, harder than TouchID.
  • Sampling the ten films most recently added to my library, eight had an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and two of 1.85:1. The 2.16:1 aspect ratio of the iPhone X is much better suited than the 1.78:1 ratio of the iPhone 6 for the 2.35:1 movies and still better suited for the 1.85:1 movies.

Yes, I do, eventually. I think Cook would have loved to stand there in September and say, "We have made the first phone to have a full screen without bezels all the way around without putting a button on the back [sniggers of laughter as someone demonstrates how awkward that is to use on an Android phone] but we, at Apple today, are proud to announce the first fingerprint ID beneath a display screen [screams of applause, whooping noises, excited people nearly fainting etc.]. But they failed. So the notch and Face ID was Plan B in my opinion. It is a less efficient design in terms of screen size to footprint than it might have been, and that is all the notch will ever say to me. I can see I will have to live with it for the next few models now, but I will never kid myself it is some sort of deliberate design statement to make sure everyone else knows they have an Apple. Who cares about that anyway? It really never crosses my mind to think person X is watching me on the train or whatever and thinking, oh cool, he has an Apple.
First people spotted here with black taped notches on their Galaxies, though

The vast majority of movies is wider than 16:9 (1.78:1), 2.35:1 is quite common. Their top and bottom letterboxes will be smaller on the iPhone X (than on the 6/7/8) and movies will be displayed larger as a consequence. And if you fill it vertically, it will be significantly less cropped on the sides.

It make more sense for all the movies that are between 1.85:1 and 2.35:1 than the 16:9/1.78:1 screen of the 6/7/8 or their Plus variants.

I had a hard time being stuck with my Plus for 2-3 years. No more! For me it’s the little phones.
These are humongous. The smallest one is 1000.00; I can’t even imagine what the prices will be on the others!

Thanks for this clarification. It helps to understand why the weird aspect ratio on iPhone X which doesn’t seem as weird.
