I think the issue for Apple on not offering 32gb as entry is due the fact that then there would be a big drop on sales for the 64gb, and not on the maybe fact that 32gb would cost then 2-3$ more then the 16gb ...

Yeah, but you cannot hold back technological progress just because you're afraid you won't be able to rip as many people off. The cost of NAND flash has shrunk dramatically in the last four years that Apple has kept the base model pegged at 16GB. The difference between a 16GB NAND module and a 32GB NAND module is LITERALLY pennies now. They have no excuse except pure greed if they choose to keep the base model at 16GB for yet another year.

I will be so disgusted if they keep the base model at 16GB that I will leave Apple for good. And I've owned every iPhone since the first one in 2007. I don't believe even Steve Jobs would have been able to stomach this.

If they're so unimaginative that they can't think of anything better to differentiate their high end from their low end iPhones asides from artificially holding back technological progress, I'm done. They could add a better camera to the high end version, a faster CPU, etc. etc. but NAND is a total commodity by now and they have absolutely no excuse.

Actually, yes Apple can "hold back technological progress". Where else are people going to go for an iPhone? Answer: no where.

Perhaps only 1% complain and threaten to leave the Apple ecosystem... and maybe 5% of THAT number actually do. Can we please leave Steve Jobs out of this? Invoking his name does not make your complaint more valid.

Apple has used storage capacities to leverage a pricing structure for all of their iOS-based devices.

Disclaimer: pointing out the reality of the situation doesn't imply that I'm in favor of it.

How many people want to bet if Apple kept the 16 gb, offered 32 gb for an extra $100 this complaint would go away?

People are stupid.. the same people that would have paid an extra $100 are up in arms because they get double that for the same money.

I was already paying for 64 gb since the iPhone 4S.. Now that storage option is $100 cheaper.. Or, I get double the storage for the same money.

The only people complaining are the cheapskates.

the only cheapskates are apple.

that very same storage in bytes may be $100 cheaper (great accomplishment in 4 years) but everything is relative. most everything needs much more space now than 4 years ago (hell the 16 gig was first released on the original model) from photos, videos to even the sms.db

there are the typical anecdotal posts where people claim 16 gig is more than enough for their grandmother so its fine for everyone. what is maybe most astounding is the group of people that are against the 32 gig replacing the 16 one for absolutely no obvious and substantiated reason besides of course that apple didnt make that decision.

of course apple also believes 8 gig to be enough and its not until you actually have to update it (which i did few weeks ago) that you realise how little you can use a phone of that capacity and the awful experience it brings. 16 gigs is slightly better.

while the prices for the chips has dropped drastically over the years and the need for more storage as gone up apple is stuck in the last decade.

the ironic part is that its apple which champions itself as a company that changes the world. but the point he was making is that eventually you will have to get with the times. else you could make the same argument with the 4 and 8 gig.

i would guess the % are probably even lower than those.

yes the capacity has been the main difference between price points but there is the ipad with cellular connection and the iphone 6+ as well so apple knows there are other ways.

If Apple are planning on touting 4k recording with the new 6s they should at least have 32gb storage as the minimum since those 4k files will be massive.

Funny story. The latest Nexus 5X leaks (LG Nexus 5 for 2015) has a 16 GB base model too. 4k recording is probably a given for the camera though. Funny how things work out? Apple will probably turn off 4k by default. People have to trigger 60 FPS in the camera settings prior to recording or taking photos. I want a front facing flash on the 5MP front facing camera though. I am still anticipating the ace up Apple's sleeves because they always wow the world with something unpredictable: Siri, Touch ID, 64 Bit Processors, etc. The S lines always have something as a major selling point because they want people upgrading each year.

The Nexus 5X is expected to cost about $399 full retail. There's a big difference between paying $399 and $649.

For $250 more, the entry-level storage should not be low.

Nexus phones also significantly cheaper(unlocked) than iphone as well. And their specs are somewhat sub par compared to other high end android phones.

iPhones are supposed to be high quality and high end phones. For the price we pay for iPhones we should have 32gb as the base model. At least for the iPhone plus series.

Not necessarily. Remember, the Nexus 6 started off as a $649 priced device, for albeit, 32 GB of storage. As for specs being somewhat sub par, it is not. They offer the latest commercially available Snapdragon processors, decent or marginal camera units, etc.

I agree that 32 should be the bare min, but I am saying that Apple isn't the only company making 16gb the lowest standard for devices.

Yes, but keep in mind, there are probably companies out there offering paltry memory for high prices. I for one don't like getting 16 GB for $649 or $749. I got my 64gb model for $749 because I forced my carrier to comply with my issues with my 64 GB GS6 Edge that I eventually got rid of. Keep in mind, no matter the price, 32 should be the bare min. I got my 128 gb Sandisk USB thumb drive for $20 brand new during Best Buy's sale a month ago.

I'm betting that in the year 2015, a puny 16GB phone for $600+ is gonna be just too much for a lot of people to stomach. And I doubt they'll be willing to shell out $100 more to get 64GB that they don't need. Especially when most competitor phones moved to a 32GB base model standard a WHILE ago.

Are you really gonna defend Apple if it keeps the base model at 16GB because they don't have any better ideas of how to get people to upgrade to the middle-tier model? This would be the FOURTH year it's been kept at 16GB, while NAND storage prices have plummeted. There's just no excuse but pure and complete greed.

Perhaps only 1% complain and threaten to leave the Apple ecosystem... and maybe 5% of THAT number actually do. Can we please leave Steve Jobs out of this? Invoking his name does not make your complaint more valid.
A lot more than 1% complained about it this year.

Again, this really isn't a huge request. It's literally PENNIES to go from a 16GB NAND module to a 32GB NAND module.

As I had said. And it's because they're not creative/innovative enough to come up with better ideas.

Yes, but Apple need to have the 64GB model as the next step up from the 16GB model. Why? Profit! They are not stupid. A 32GB option would mean far less people opting for the more expensive 64GB option.

Apple do not exist to give you and I what we believe to be the perfect product. They exist to make money.

Having said all that, the 16GB/32GB models are useless to me and I need the 64GB model. I just wish it were a little cheaper.

why more now than before? why not 4/64/128 or 8/32/256 etc.

apple was created and exists to make computer products.

The original vision no longer applies. Whilst they still make excellent hardware (but awful software!), their main aim is to be as lean and as profitable as they can be.

Wanna guess which one sells more? The Z5 will be in the bargain bin 3 months after release and won't even be an afterthought in people's minds. Plus, you won't get a software update since Sony will have moved on to something else, leaving you with a nice shiny 4K paperweight LOL.
Does it matter for consumers who is making or selling more ?

I think you would have to be really sad as a person to care how much a giant corporation makes, unless your a share holder.

It seems Sony isn't also using stock Android now, so I'm guessing people will get updates pretty quick like Motorola.

The funny thing is IPhone specs in the Android world are probably comparable with a mid range phone in the Android world.

It doesn't have the best screen
Doesn't have the best speakers
Doesn't have the best cameras
Doesn't have the best performance.
Software now is buggy.
You get low amount of storage for more than what most high end android phones get.

Basically apple last year though making a phone size bigger and making the phone thinner was innovation. They are falling so far behind in terms of technology.

Sony just released their new 4k Display phone. I give it 2 years max and every high end android phone will have 4k displays and apple will still have a generic 1080p display.

Yeah mid ranged specs with high end price.

This is what I'll never understand about Apple. Their phones design and UI is gorgeous. But their hardware is behind. Apple apologist like to make a 1000 excuses for it. But there is no excuse. I like the reliability of apple products but I'm not going to deny when apple is cheating customers.

Like their camera. Although the camera on my iphone 6 plus is decent for everyday stuff. The photo quality is laughable compared to my s6 edge photo quality. Especially when using the front camera. It is ridiculous that their phones are still sporting a 8mp camera. My galaxy s2 from 2011 had a 8 mp camera.

Apple can be really stubborn And cheap at times.

It's not really hard to understand why apple get away with this to be honest.

They have a huge fan base built from the early iPhone days when there phone WAS the best on the market in terms of technology and software. They also have a huge marketing force.

The reason why Samsung have become the biggest android smartphone sellers is also because they spend vast amounts of money on marketing.

Samsung didn't have nearly the best looking or acting software and there hardware loomed cheap, they still sold far more than any other android phone maker, despite other phone makers making high quality products with better software.

It's sheep mentality. I just got the note 5 ( came from the iphone 6 plus which bent lol) and I got the note because the build quality and the has the highest quality and performing technology in the smartphone world.

When I'm spending a lot of money on a phone I simply don't want to get scammed from a company.

The software and performance has vastly improved as well it seems. I haven't had one bit or stutter or lag, it's as smooth as my iPhone and even quicker at opening apps and multitasking.

Never again am I getting fleeced by Apple.

Getting fleeced is subjective. If I sold my 6+ to someone for say $1500, I would say that I ripped someone off, but if they say, developed an app or use it for work to make a profit, it is justified to invest the money. But getting back to a realistic example, I spend $750 for my 6+ w/64 GB. I spent $750 for my Note 5 32 GB. I think my Note is more versatile, but my iPhone is more comfortable to use. Do I regret either purchase based off hardware specs? Not at all. If someone is happy w/ their purchase, then leave them be. To you it can be a fleece, but to others it won't. I used to be Anti-Apple, but then I gave them a chance and now, I like their products. It's not just marketing that's huge, it's what luxuries it provides. Biggest app market, comforting messaging system, a simplified OS, etc.

I'm not defending Apple but I disagree.

Screen isn't best but it's really good. Accurate colors. Pixels isn't everything. A 4k screen is pointless right now. The 1080p display is still among the best reviewed.

Sound is good for a smartphone. Not m8 good but most phones aren't.

Camera is consistently rated among the best. People comparing a 1 year old phone to a phone that just came out a few months ago isn't being fair.

Best performance? Most agree it still reigns supreme in overall smoothness. No carrier bloat, timely updates, etc.

I agree 32 gb should be the 650 pricepoint.
