There would not have been an iPhone without the success of the Palm and PocketPC. First DOES matter sometimes. By the way, FaceID can be fooled too, though its a little harder. Does that make it "garbage" because it doesn't work perfectly every time?

But Apple sure did copy their own share of things, like offering big and different size phones, wireless charging, waterproofing and facial ID. I mean, Apple refined some of these features, good for them. But don't forget, Samsung makes a lot of Apple's parts. That's no small contribution.

So I really don't know why Apple fanboys hate Samsung so much. I like when companies copy each other, That means we get better products that are non-exclusive to one kind of phone.

I don’t hate Samsung. I just laugh at the idea that anyone might actually consider Samsung to be an equal to Apple in terms of design, much less a credible threat in the smartphone market.

I had the original iphone. The UI I agree was fantastic. Very smooth back then, seems far smoother than ios11 on my iPad now but maybe I have rose tinted glasses on.

Coming from a nokia n95 though I found it a bit restricting not being able to install apps and being only 2g (there was no app store on that first iPhone originally)...that nokia was a brilliant phone. The UK at that time was way ahead of the US in terms of 3g networks, video calling, sports video highlights etc.

Then Nokia dropped the ball completely by not putting a graphics accelerator chip in the n96 and skimping on ram and the rest is history.....

The iPhone was a sexy phone back then though I'll admit it :D

In 2007, my Nokia was a better phone and a sophisticated small web-searching device with a full color screen less than half size of new iPhone.

I saw iPhone and I saw the future. Sold Nokia online, bought iPhone. tripped once over a new Android but the affair lasted only til Best Buy reopened next morning. Returned it, begged my iPhone’s forgiveness, and never looked back.

So in your opinion, size of the phone can be copied, like WiFi and cell chips, waterproofing etc? Face id was not copied as in the android world where is it used for nfc authentication? My watch was waterproof in the 1960s, does that mean android copied that and Apple copied android. Tough to keep track of who actually copied who.

If I may use your pejorative labels for one second: “Apple fanboys”, IMO, don’t “hate” Samsung. “Apple fanboys” “hate” “Samsung fanboys”. And maybe vice-versa.:)

Well, believe what you want, I'm fairly certain I've used/processed Apple Pay on iPhones of all varieties, including the X over the past year a far greater number of times than you. And yes, you have to have the display pointing toward your face within a reasonable distance (never said it had to be up close) else it won't authenticate. On an iPhone using TouchID, I can pay with the display face down, at arms length off to my side (say, as I'm walking past a terminal). I see lots of people bungling their Apple Pay transactions on a daily basis, far more often with the X than older phones.

I never said it doesn't work...only that it wasn't as streamlined or simple as paying with TouchID.

And also to be clear, I'm a fan of FaceID and overall have come to prefer it over TouchID. I just think this is the one bit of functionality where it falls a bit short of its predecessor. Certainly not a huge deal. My one wish right now is for an option to be able to choose to bypass the lock screen after FaceID authenticates--wish I didn't have to always swipe away that screen.

Agree with the above - I actually think it looks pretty rude, as it looks as though you're pointing it at the shopkeeper. When I try and be more subtle about it, I get the 'pay with passcode' message. Face ID is great, but it would be no match for under the screen touch ID.

You don't think they are a threat to apple?

Samsung is a big reason that apple got the updated features to the new line of phones

The mobile arm of Samsung is very different from their electronic components section. From a business perspective, there is no reason why Samsung would stop supplying parts to Apple so long as Apple is willing to pay.

As for the smartphone division, the general consensus seems to be “great hardware, crappy software”. And I also have reason to believe that Samsung’s position in the high-end segment of the smartphone market is eroding in recent years. So Apple will continue to aggregate the best customers (those with a propensity to spend), monopolise the profits in the market, leaving scraps for the competition to fight over.

While I think FaceID is the future, I think you’re vastly overblowing the case “issue”. There have been scanners in the back of Android phones for years with that exact layout and it hasn’t been a problem....
Yeah. Having a dirt entry point on the surface that’s always lying in the dirt on every surface isn’t a potential problem? Not to mention having to find the spot to put your finger when you’d rather be looking at the front. So either blindly rubbing the back or having to flip the phone over. No thanks
