The downgraded camera is a dealbreaker on that 6.1". I hope this rumor is untrue. I don't want an X Plus if it's larger than my 7 Plus and even more expensive than the X. Also I prefer LCD to OLED, so the 6.1" would have been perfect. Would have been...

The screen can be 6.5 inches and easily be smaller than the 7 plus if it has no bezels. The current X is 5.8 and far small than the plus.

Lol they’re literally creating a “knockoff” of their own phone. Oh you want the X but can’t afford it? Here’s a gimped crappy version of it! Get the look without the price! Their product line grow more confusing by the minute. SAD.
The sad thing is OLED and aluminum need not be gimped of features like dual lens camera and decent RAM for it to still be affordable. The 8 Plus has dual lens camera system and is more affordable than the X. It sounds like Apple intends to handicap the aluminum LCD model even further to manipulate customers into the most expensive options. The thing is, I can afford the top of the line OLED model. My eyes just can’t tolerate the OLED display as well as the LCD display.

Oh well these are all just rumors. No sense for me to invest myself emotionally in anything yet. I’m enjoying my 8 Plus very much. Apple did a really nice job on these phones. Owning a Pixel 2, though, I gotta say Apple needs to step up their game and tweak the camera software a bit more. It’s amazing how great the Pixel camera pictures are with only one lens and excellent software.

Compromise 3D touch to make it as cheap as $750!

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who often relays information gathered from sources within Apple's supply chain in Asia, today shared a trio of new research notes that outline both new and existing predictions about the new iPhone X, iPhone X Plus, and lower-priced 6.1-inch iPhone expected later this year.

MacRumors obtained a copy of each research note, and we've rounded up the key points. More details are available in our 2018 iPhones roundup.

All-New 6.1-inch iPhone with LCD

New:o Taiwanese manufacturers Pegatron, Foxconn, and Wistron will be the key assemblers of the 6.1-inch iPhone, with 60 percent, 30 percent, and 10 percent allocation of EMS respectively
o Japan Display will supply around 70 percent of LCD panels for the 6.1-inch iPhone. Rumors suggest Apple will use Japan Display's six-inch Full Active LCDs that only require ultra-slim 0.5mm bezels on all four sides
Reiterated:o Nearly full screen design with no home button and notch for TrueDepth sensors
o 3D sensing for Face ID and Animoji
o Rectangular-shaped, one-cell battery with 2,850-2,950 mAh, up to 8.5 percent larger than current iPhone X. The increased capacity will be the result of a smaller logic board given manufacturing advancements
o Lower price point: starting at between $700 and $800 in the United States
The rumored 6.1-inch iPhone is shaping up to be a lower-priced iPhone X with some design compromises, which Kuo previously said will include an aluminum frame, a lack of 3D Touch, a single rather than dual lens rear camera, and 3GB of RAM, which will be less memory than other new 2018 iPhones have.

Next-Generation iPhone X and iPhone X Plus

According to Kuo, the second-generation iPhone X and a larger 6.5-inch version we're calling iPhone X Plus will each have an increased 4GB of RAM. Unsurprisingly, given its larger physical size, the iPhone X Plus is also expected to have up to a 25 percent larger battery capacity of 3,300-3,400 mAh vs. iPhone X.

Kuo adds that Apple has settled on a two-cell, L-shaped design for the second-generation iPhone X and iPhone X Plus battery, compared to a single-cell, L-shaped design that could have yielded up to 10 percent additional capacity.

By the sounds of it, the new iPhone X and iPhone X Plus, beyond the latter's larger screen size, won't be significant upgrades. Kuo doesn't expect improvements to be made to the TrueDepth camera system until 2019. Nevertheless, he expects the devices to sell well, especially the lower-priced 6.1-inch iPhone.

They could do what Android does - use a long-press to trigger the same thing. I actually find a long-press to be more intuitive and reliable. I'm always unsure of how much pressure I need to apply for 3D.

Nice joke. 3d touch/taptic engine now is on cars too like audi a8/a7 etc
Only the cheaper one is suppose not to have it,like the SE

It isn’t a joke. One of the most reputable insiders who reports Apple leaks has just recently claimed that they will be discontinuing 3D Touch. It just never really caught on.

You guys need to give up on this idea that the notch is going away. It's the new design language of the entire iPhone lineup, not some rash decision they made in a design meeting just because they couldn't come up with anything better.

The last time they changed the design, they stuck with it for four years, so I'd prepare for the notch to exist until at least September 2021. I bet y'alls iPhone 8s will be feeling pretty ancient by then.
I second on this. Notch is so exaggerated and becoming an excuse of not getting the best iPhone in the history up to date because of so many reasons, which the most likelihood is lack of purchasing power triggering jealousy and creating fake news to belittle the best iPhone to influence people not buying it due how bad it is. Diligent individuals would not listen this fake negative news. Notch complaints become so old and tiring and do not need to be responded, just ignore them. The notch complainers just could not move on.

Ok...or you could get used to these things in the future.
Some of us found migraines and eye strain were triggered by OLED. I though my X was a really excellent phone, but I returned it and purchased an 8 Plus in part due to the discomfort the OLED display was causing my eyes. I had other reasons for my decision but that was a considerable factor. I love to read ebooks on my iPhone and I could not on the X.

Some people had migraines so severe they went to the hospital. There’s a whole long thread about it on this forum. So it’s not necessarily a matter of some of us being unwilling to embrace the future with OLED. We genuinely don’t know how or if that figure will accommodate us.

I was going to say the same thing. Basically everything I use (cursor movement, open window in new tab, copy) 3d touch for can (and is in some cases) be implemented with a long press, I think. I don't use 3d touch for things like sharing apps or opening Instagram direct to the camera.

I’m watching the 6.1” iPhone with curiosity as I’m due to upgrade this year. I was liking the fact it’s a similar footprint size to my current 6S and that it has an LCD display but puzzled by the lack of 3D Touch? My current phone has it but this one doesn’t yet the X and X Plus do? That sounds like a deal breaker to me.

I know this is all rumour but I really do hope Apple aren’t deliberately releasing a budget spec at a premium price just to keep it inferior to the iPhone X variant. This sort of strategy just pushes people to buy last years models cheaper and keep the premium specs like we’ve seen over the past few months. Consumers aren’t stupid these days.

Would the rumor of lack of 3D Touch have anything to do with the also rumored support for Apple Pencil?
Would the two conflict?

Looks like 2gb ram iOS devices are soon to be outdated. Better not update iOS on those devices anymore.

My initial thoughts as well (with the exception of not avoiding updates as I need the security updates). I've been pondering on whether to get myself an iPhone 8, but it might not be such future-proof now.

I actually think it makes sense. If the LCD 6.1 retains a lower price point, it could eliminate 3D Touch for price point reasons for lower tier pricing. While the more expensive 5.8/6.5 OLED model retains 3D Touch.

You can still buy a 6S with 3D Touch though. It’s become a fundamental iPhone feature and leaving it off a phone that is supposed to satisfy Apples core iPhone market this year is very off putting. It’s bad enough they hold back features year on year but charging a premium for a device and giving it the ‘budget’ treatment is very cheeky. It’s no wonder long term iPhone users like myself are becoming highly critical of them lately.

Very true, and we'll all do just that.

HOWEVER, it's still worth pointing out that change-for-the-sake-of-change has always been problematic. Getting rid of the fingerprint reader (a feature that took a long time to win over the masses) in favor of a different biometric does not seem to many consumers a reasonable tradeoff. It's totally fair to voice our opinions. From my perspective, having both for a couple of iterations would have helped those masses make the transition.

We will see a new Apple Pencil with 3D Touch capabilities for the larger phone and iPad X

Again with the lame notch design? How many more iterations of the iPhone will it take before I will be able to purchase new device? Still not buying one as long as they’re “settling” on aesthetics with that ridiculous notch.

Apple is discontinuing 3D Touch. As it was an under-used, under-developed, and mostly unwanted feature, like most things they release these days.

At a guess, five years. The notch will shrink (prediction) but putting it below the display surface is 4-6 years away (guess).
