You're assuming people will actually stay within the ecosystem for that long. I think that the majority of people who wanted an iPhone X already have one, and the rest are lukewarm at best to its questionable design cues.

If the next batch of iPhones is as disappointing as the current generation, then the odds of me staying with an iPhone of some sort are greatly diminished. After 8 years of exclusively using iPhones and 10 years of using iOS, there is a very high probability that my next phone will be made by Samsung.

Well put. When people do put their heads above the IOS parapets they’ll be shocked how the competition has moved on in their absence. It’s true you can get the same if not better specs for half the price of a X.

However objective appraisal goes out of the window for most Apple users because the OS is the draw. Not the phone. And iOS has done well despite its increased complexity and questionable new ‘features’. Such was Jobs foresight a decade ago and how far ahead of his time he was.

Conversely I want the most advanced phone out there now (Note 8) and even though $200 cheaper than the X it’s still too much for a phone IMHO. So currently I’m optimistically awaiting a comes out next month ... tho ironically that model doesn’t look drastically different from the current S8.

It would be quite ironic if Samsung was taking a cue from Apple and treading water for another year.

As iPhones are rapidly increasing in price I am judging them more harshly because i want to be satisfied with my purchase. The more expensive anything is, the higher the expectation. If they are removing key features and still charging a premium then I can’t look past it and will just seek an older iPhone with less compromises and more sensibly priced.
That’s also why Apple is keeping the previous years’ iPhones in the lineup (even the 6S and SE are still available today for those anxious losing the headphone jack).

What if this is some new iPod touch?

Weird that Apple would release a cheaper iPhone that has a larger screen than the 5.8” iPhone X.

Even as someone who has followed Apple regularly for years I find myself getting confused with these convoluted product lines. Remember when the latest iPhone was the best iPhone? I get having varying display sizes but it should just be 3 sizes, all while being the absolute best possible phones they can make. Instead I feel like I'm being nickel and dimed. Same for the iPad line up.

Lack of 3D Touch? These "analysts" are taking a shot in the dark. There is no way Apple does this.

I think they will do away with the 3D Touch. I've had chances to use it with the 6s+ and the 7+ and totally forgot that it was a feature, I just didn't find it useful personally, now I own a X and never use it. Maybe they have a code built into iOS to let them know just how much usage it gets and can they do away with it to replace it with something better or useful. Time will tell until the next iPhone update.

How useful 3D touch really is? I occasionally use it for text navigation ("touchpad") and really nothing else. On the other hand, when you press and hold a link in Safari, you always have to make sure you pressed it very lightly so it doesn't invoke the useless "peek" - if you often open tabs in the background, 3D touch is actually a nuisance. Honestly, I would not care AT ALL if they dropped 3D touch. It's confusing and pointless.

No. Haptic feedback and vibration are still needed, and the way Apple does it is via the same motor that generated 3D Touch feedback. So it would seem to be a waste of what they have developed for years (since the 6S).

Why is haptic feedback needed when it would be obvious that the long-press was registered by the fact the context-sensitive menu popped up in response to it?

I still can't stand that dumb notch! A little bezel of black on the top and bottom would look SO much better. Especially on that larger phone. Man, that's ugly.

I think it's absolutely the appropriate word.

There is nothing in the “engineering” of the notch or the protruding camera that is “sloppy”. If you had said “design”the statement may have some merit but it would be entirely subjective opinion. The word “sloppy” isn’t appropriate as it implies a rush and lack of care. Calling the engineering sloppy is a sloppy use of language.

Finally more RAM. I seriously wasn’t buying another iPhone with 3 gigs RAM. So tired of reloading apps.

I think the Japan Display information is accurate for the LCD. Apple and Japan Display have been involved in quite a bit of "unmarked facility" development over the past 5 years, including Apple's work on their Micro LED. When Micro LED matures thats it for OLED. Many will be "surprised" at the quality of the LCD in the "Budget Device." I'm very bullish on the future between Apple and Japan Display. If only Farce ID would go away. :apple:

6s and SE are only a couple of months to belong to the past...

There will be a 4" SE 2. :apple:

Time to rename the website. KGIrumors.com sounds like a good place to start.

Mingmors has a nice ring. ;)

The biggest problem Apple, and the rest of the industry, faces is that the smartphone is a mature product.

Incremental improvements are no longer enough for the public at large to drop $1000 every year or two on a new phone that fundamentally performs the same functions as the one they currently use.

A slightly larger screen? A better camera? Slightly better (but still just adequate) battery life? Design decisions like "the notch?" That's strictly fanboi fodder.

Most people are just going to replace their phones when they die, or some other circumstance calls for it. Not because of rote upgrade-itis like the makers would have you subscribe to.

Replacement cycles for smartphones are naturally lengthening as they have for computers, tablets, and every other piece of technology.

The question for Apple is, "what comes after the iPhone?" This cash cow won't live forever. It doesn't seem to have a hardware answer, so it's doubling down on ecosystem lockdown and captive services.
