Apple Pay is a form of NFC payment, but in some ways it’s more secure than the tap to pay on android. I always like calling it Apple Pay, because it drives the android crowd insane 😂

I think I’ve started getting NFC on my credit and debit cards within the past year. I guess it depends on what bank you have. One of my banks has moved to NFC debit cards, but is only issuing them out when the old ones expire or are lost.

Most countries have moved to contactless payments. In China everything is with WeChat. I went over there on vacation about 10 years ago, and I was amazed by this. You can order a haircut and pay for it as you’re walking to the barbershop.
I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that you’re paying a physical business with a messaging app. It’ll be like a barber shop in the US only accepting payments through Facebook messenger.

That being said, I’m able to pay ahead of time with a lot of places in the US too, and I do. And I am starting to love the QR code receipts that you get at restaurants now, as no need to take cards away, and no need to touch a grimey tablet.

Always hated the outdated practice of taking our card away. Glad to hear they’ve started to move to QR codes!

I know the rest of the world gives you the terminal to use NFC with, but for that to happen here, we’ll have to get rid of tipping culture I guess. 🙄

But at least a tablet doesn't waste paper if you don't want a receipt. There was some cool restaurant once where the server brought a device you did a QR or NFC on to pay.

No you wouldn’t. The portable terminals do have both the option to enter the tip before charging the card and the option to leave the voucher open for later adjustment. Americans just need to open their mind more.

Yeah I guess that’s true. Yes, we definitely have a lot to open our minds to. Honestly, tipping is a system created by businesses so they don’t have to pay their staff fair wages. They’re outsourcing pay to the customer, who gets to pick and choose their server’s fate based on some arbitrary criteria including attractiveness. It’s a system that belongs back in the feudal age.

It has nothing to do with tipping culture, rather it has to do with the reason why restaurants have tipping in the first place. They’re cheapskates and don’t want to spend the money on improving the food ahem….wireless terminals.

(My subtle jab at Applebees).

Yeah I saw it. What’s that about pinpad toppers, though? if that means they are installing an add-on to accept contactless then it proves that they, and presumably other holdouts too, did remove the built in nfc hardware from their pinpads.

Kroger in SW Ohio isn't using external readers, just the one built into the MX915. (Had a recent trip there.)

Uh no those aren't contactless readers instead it's a a small placard that says you can now use NEW Contact free payments. Kroger always has had contactless readers ever since they upgraded to MX915s but they had them disabled.

It's little cards that tell people they have Apple Pay now.

You can buy products from Lowe's on their website using Apple Pay and then pick them up in store. So maybe using Apple Pay in store is on their radar.

It is. According to some store employees who posted on reddit, it will be added this summer. I'm excited. Both Kroger and Lowes this summer, and HEB in the fall.

Heard reports that Dillons and Mariano's locations fo not have Apple Pay yet, there may presumably be others that don't. Kroger twitter still says that only some of their divisions have it.

It wouldn't surprise me if they held off on their "lower cost" brands (like Food 4 Less) for reasons. Speaking of which, it might be worth checking out Food 4 Less here as IIRC it didn't get turned on when Ralphs did.
