They will look inconspicuous, other than being a large protruding square black hump on the back of the phone. Nobody will know what they are.

It seems odd that it would be mentioned if there is a camera bump. Who looks at the back of there phone and says 'ah the slightly blue camera lens really stands out

It might mean there is no camera bump for the 3rd camera so it mostly blends into the back of a black iPhone? Unlikely, but possible.

What innovative feature should they add?

Smart phones have peaked, people. We've known this for a few years now.

My exact thoughts. It is a double edged sword. I remember, and love the days of upgrading my phone every 6-8 months, but now I have zero desire to upgrade from the X. The next time I upgrade will probably be if the rumors of smaller phones make a comeback. Otherwise, I will probably keep my X until 2020 at the very least.

What kind of ‘new experience’ are you expecting? I mean, what was face ID? I think too many are quick to pass judgment on the triple lens camera and yet we don’t even know what its capabilities are as yet. I usually wait to fall to make any judgments, but I would say this year is slated to be a fairly big upgrade for the camera more than anything else. If Apple proves low light photography, I consider that to be fairly significant for me.
I'll take a fingerprint reader over face iD, triple lens doesn't interest me, and as far as new experience I'd say the Galaxy Fold if they can fix the issues. At this point we're just buying the same phones over and over, pictures aren't getting any more crispy and you'll never notice the difference in speed between the iPhone today and the iPhone this fall.

I’m just glad we’re getting Qualcomm modems. That and iOS 13 should make iPhone great again.

I'm trying to think when I've ever heard anyone say "I wish you couldn't tell there was a camera under this giant bump where a camera usually sits"...

The Fold in theory sounds great, but it just looks like absolute hell... For $2k it needs to look a lot more polished. The front screen is terrible and the inside screens are having issues. In typical Samsung fashion they rush it out the door so they can lay claim as the first to do it.

What features or innovation is Samsung bringing to the table that Apple isn't?
Pen support on their Note series, the best smartphone displays on the planet, foldable screens, in-screen fingerprint scanners, headphone jacks on their phones, etc.

Some of these features may be first generation implementations, but at least Samsung is pushing the boundaries. iPhones are really boring in comparison. The only "exciting" feature they have is Face-ID.

That’s the the thing the galaxy fold is basically an android tablet with a tiny phone slapped on the front.

The android tablet has a huge off-center notch, no expandable storage and no 3.5mm headphone jack.

A notch, no expandable storage, and no headphone jack and cost 2k. Yeah your not buying the same phone over and over again, your basically buying an iPhone without Face ID.

For 2k i can get
2019 iPhone and Apple Watch series 5
Or
2019 iPhone and 2019 iPad Pro
Or
2019 iPhone and Apple Watch series 5 and an iPad mini

I'm on an iPhone 8. I don't want to upgrade until they have a replacement phone with that size. Besides the 8 is still very fast.

I know by now to reserve judgment until the reveal in September but... it’s not looking like this year will be upgrade worthy from my X.

Maybe I’ll pick up a used XS Max if I can get a good deal.

What Apple really need to work on for their cameras are better night shots. I have been comparing low light shots taken with my iPhone X to those taken with Pixel and Samsung. The iPhone's pics are not even close to the quality of the others.

I predict that the 2019 phones will have Qualcomm modems, so they will have better reception especially inside buildings

Just curious, what is it that we're missing?

The usual:
slower storage with less bandwidth, because it’s cheaper.
An off center hole in the display with a bottom bezel and curved display instead of a notch and no chin because it’s cheaper.
A terrible fps instead 3D fid, because it’s cheaper.
Aluminum instead of stainless steel, you know because it cheaper.
Home screen customization over privacy, you know because you spend more time staring at the home screen and talking about customization instead of using the phone.

Oh and it has to cost as much as an iPhone, who cares about the cheaper components, it has a fast charger in the box!!

So yeah, The usual.

This will be the first year in 12 years that I don't get the new iPhone. The upgrade programs have served me well, but I can't imagine needing more than the XS Max, and what they have planned is not going to be a compelling upgrade over last year. I'm sure they are resigned to that now, that YoY they are no longer going to drive upgrades.

If Apple really want to increase sales they'd bring out a phone a regular woman can hold one-handed, rather than patronising them with pink cases.
