I much prefer they ditch the Face ID altogether.
Face ID was great in 2017,when under display touch ID technology wasn't available.
now it's available, and it's superior and much more ergonomic and convenient.

What a weird thing to want... for yourself & others to have LESS choices.
A bit of a head scratcher. I mean, nobody has ever used the middle backseat seatbelt in my car... but I wouldn’t say something as pompous as: “I wish all car companies would ditch those seatbelts altogether, because I don’t use them”.

Anyways... pretty sure, even if you never use it again for security- all that FaceID tech is going to power a lot of future (and some current!) AR experiences.
Do you not want anyone to have access to those experiences either?

Touch ID was flawed as well. Didn’t work with gloves, wet hands (generally). Flawed system when playing in the snow I had to remove gloves. No system is perfect

Totally agree! I think this is one of the few times having redundant features is a huge bonus!

It's one of the reasons why the A12 Neural Engine is 9X faster than A11.

I guarantee you no one, not even Apple will implement constant authorization. The level of convenience is way too low for a level of security that most people don’t need.

Just a matter of time before Apple re-adopts fingerprint. If Apple wants good security, fingerprint offers it through continuous biometrics authentication. Every time you interact, you're being authenticated. This isn't possible with Face ID - not from a power perspective.

This isn't your grandpa's fingerprint tech. Today, ultrasonic fingerprint sensors can read the capillaries under the finger. The old myth about 1:50,000 odds no longer applies. Reading capillaries also means additional health features.

Genuinely curious, and not looking to have an argument, stranger. :) I have sweaty palms, and TouchID on my 7 (previously, 6S) is abysmal for me. FaceID is pretty much flawless for me on my wife's XR. (Can't afford an upgrade yet, but can't wait to do so.) Do you think that the tech to which you are referring will be consistently accurate and be able to read through moisture and buildup that occurs from having sweaty palm syndrome? For me, security is important, but I also want convenience. I pick up the XR, and I'm in. I pick up my 7 and, best case, my hands aren't sweaty that day, and it works perfectly. Worst case, I press the home button, get an error, try again, get an error, wipe off my home button, get an error, wipe my thumb, get an error, wipe my thumb and the button, then it works. Or, it still doesn't, and I have to type in my passcode. Usually, I just try once, it fails, and then I type my passcode. No exaggeration: I think TouchID works about 15% of the time on the first attempt. All that to say, I'm really curious to know more about the technology to which you're referring (got a name for the tech I can look up?), and I'd like to know if you or anyone else thinks this new tech may help folks like me. Thanks in advance! :)

Ultrasonic fingerprint readers provide a nearly zero-friction experience. They will read dirty fingers, wet fingers, and even under water. It scans the subdermal layer unlike Touch ID. Vivo Apex 2019 is a good example of this full display technology.

I understand your question and it was answered above. My question is, why, as this rumor states, having both methods, is a problem? I've been on this forum for a long time and have watched Apple go from a second class citizen to what it is now. As this has happened, I've also observed that the users have become more unwilling to accept most tech that Apple doesn't offer NOW. If they add it in the future, people are good with it.

I just don't get what's happened to the old Apple faithful who loved tech and the advancement of it. Seems to me that has been lost.

Using things like autofill passwords are WAY more convenient with face ID.
touching the display once is always better than picking the phone then staring at the phone from a ceratin distance and angle.
[doublepost=1565224948][/doublepost]
FaceID isn't going anywhere.
we'll see about that.
face recognition will live on in other form factors but as a way to unlock/verification for a phone/tablet it's just not ergonomic and as not as effective as finger print scanner.

If you are trying to log into a site or bank account I'm gonna make a wild guess and say 99.9 percent of people are already staring at their phone in hand ;)

Imagine how boring and unexciting the iPhone 2019 is... all the rumours are for iPhone 2020 and 2021. Nice.

Yeah... for me that kinda sucks cause I'm not willing to deal with my phone's jank for another year (it started having issues a few months ago and has become pretty ****** pretty quick... add in it's 5 years old and Apple is going to stop supporting it next upgrade, it's time). I'm already impatient for the month to go by. But I know I'm getting a pretty bad upgrade in the long view (unless it has a really good speed boost it's going to be pretty meh and probably not going to be the longest lasting phone... if it at least had a good speed boost I'd at least have confidence it would at least last me a while).

But yeah, it sounds like if your phone is decently tolerable that it's better to hold off on this year's upgrade.

what if you want a quick look at your bank account while out and about in a sunny day wearing those sunglasses that Face ID cannot recognize? (actual real life example which face ID failed).
there is no debate,a quick touch on the screen beats keeping the phone in certain angel and distance and having problem with ceratin of your outfits any day.
Also by eliminating face ID,they can shrink the ugly notch by 95%.

The notch isn’t going anywhere. It’ll get smaller, but it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Macs and iPads use Touch ID so it shows the security is still up to Apple's standards which means it's good enough for us.

Now can we get back to a notch-less phone with Touch ID so we have the same feature across iPhone, iPad, and Mac? I suppose Face ID people want iPad/Mac notch

when Apple eventually get rid of Face ID and replace it with the superior technology of Under Display Touch ID,there will be no need for notch.just a discreet tiny punch hole like what you see on Note 10.even that will eventually disappear when they implement under display camera lens.(already started).
it's just matter of time.
again like it or not,Face ID was a product of it's time.it's almost over now, technology has advanced to something superior that wasn't possible when they were forced to come up with Face ID.
but as always it will take time for Apple to implement their own version.
get ready to remember Face ID and Notch as memories of old times.:D

News flash. The iPad Pro uses Face ID and doesn't have a notch.

Errr...you do know that iPad Pro is notch-less and has bezels that supports my side more than yours.

Bringing that up only shows Face ID supporters having a double standard. I didn't think anyone was fool enough.

Where's your notched, no bezel, curved screen edge iPad Pro?

It's not a double standard at all. The iPad is enormous when compared to the size of an iPhone and the designers have enough room to include Face ID without having to use a notch.

Once half screen fps technology is available face Id will be gone either way. It was always going to be a stop gap. IPhones are already looking incredibly dated due to the giant notch needed for FaceID.

One persons "looking incredibly dated" is another persons looking cool in a crowd. It's all subjective.

Adopting it in 2021 seems odd, tech is certainly available today. Already used it oneplus7 this year.
Probably the same reason why apple didn't slap a fingerprint sensor into the phone prior to 2013. (Whatever reason that is)

It may be subjective but 99 percent of people will agree a notch is not ideal and all screen displays are the future. So yes, the iPhone is already looking dated for the majority of people.

Got a citation to backup your 99%? If not, it's just subjective anecdotal hyperbole, which turns the conclusion an opinion especially since you can't speak for tens of millions of consumers.

It's common sense buddy, come on. Nobody wants a notch cutting into thier display, anyone who says otherwise has major bias towards Apple. You need to step out of the Apple echo chamber that is mac rumours.
