I use FaceID on a 2018 iPad Pro and it works perfectly. It even works in the dark.
Perhaps you need to re-register your face, and try again.

TouchID doesn't work well if your finger is wet.
Touch ID doesn't require any specific angle, Face ID does.

Let it be an option, those who prefer faceID use it and those who prefer touchID use it.

Maybe, but I doubt this is a concern for Apple. Look at the cases they are selling now, with huge cutouts at the bottom that expose the whole lower edge of the phone. If that's an acceptable look to them, then what's one more hole?

There are a lot of things Apple is "okay" with. The cases I buy aren't for show they are for protecting my phone, so I don't have cases with massive exposure. The whole point of my statement is you need all case manufacturers putting large exposure holes for a fingerprint reader.

Just no way this is true. Fingerprint reader under the screen? Sure.

My Nextbit Robin from 2016 had this feature, it worked really well. Wasn't there rumors that the iPhone X was going to have this years ago?

Hard to imagine Apple going back to a feature they previously dumped—adding cost, complexity, and redundancy, thereby putting pressure on profit margins. And we all know how Apple will go to extraordinary lengths to protect them.
You mean, like the scissor-keys that they dumped and then brought back? 😉

Face ID is not working well in China or Asia now. People wearing mask to prevent coronavirus and need to risk their lives to expose their faces to unlock the phone.
I suppose we should ALL wear masks to prevent our iPhone's from unlocking (never mind using the passcode) Afterall, the flu is more dangerous than the coronavirus and MORE people have died from that in the same time frame. And that is annual...every single year...everywhere.

Does anyone know if this Coronavirus will delay production? Businesses are shutting down everywhere in China, wasn't sure if anyone knows if Apple will be affected?

Presumably, Apple have a virus proof eco-friendly bubble village for all of their employees?

hard to tell at this point seeing as production hasn't started yet.

Mmm. That one I'll probably buy if my 7 Plus battery looses too much capacity by that time.

Im not sure how anyone on MR forums could answer your question, unless they can predict the future.

Hahaa I was telling the naysayers here months ago that I’d bet we wouldn’t get the next major iPhone revision (notchless) until 2021. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Apple likes 4-year cycles on a major hardware version.

Probably. But this phone isn't due to come out until 2021.

Now that the iPad Air 4th Gen. has been announced with Touch ID in the power button, I really hope this phone comes to fruition. An 5.5" Edge to edge LCD display, Touch ID in the power button, A14 processor, and 4G LTE priced at $399 would be nice. I hope we hear more about this rumored phone soon, otherwise I'll have to cough up the bucks to get the 5.4" iPhone 12 for $250- $300 more.

That'd be weird because current iPhone 11 which is considered the entry level of modern iPhones already use Face ID for biometric security. If anything, power button Touch ID would make it as the next gen iPhone SE upgrade.
