I like TouchID, but are there any new tech for under display scanners? The latest one is just the ultrasonic one used by Galaxy S21 from Qualcomm with a bit larger surface area. And even that one still cannot match a typical capacitive scanner. My Poco X3 with cheap old capacitive scanner on the power button reads my fingerprint at a much higher success rate than my S21. And this is supposed to be the best under display scanner tech. Forget about the optical ones, they’re not that good.

If Apple put Touch ID under the display, it has to perform at least as well as the capacitive Touch ID. That’s already a tall order imo. Looking at the iPad Air with power button TouchID, maybe that’s what Apple would use. Not only it’s cheaper for Apple, capacitive still wins in speed and accuracy.

Kuo: 2016 iPhones may feature under screen Touch ID.
Kuo: 2017 iPhones may feature under screen Touch ID.
Kuo: 2018 iPhones may feature under screen Touch ID.
Kuo: 2019 iPhones may feature under screen Touch ID.
Kuo: 2020 iPhones may feature under screen Touch ID.
Kuo: 2021 iPhones may feature under screen Touch ID.
Kuo: 2022 iPhones may feature under screen Touch ID.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say: Nope.

FaceID and the notch are the most horrifying features of a smartphone I have seen. I will even take Bixby over it, at least you do not have to use Bixby and does not get in your way.

We really needed this during the pandemic when FaceID became useless due to masks. Now, I don't care anymore. FaceID works perfectly as long as my face is not covered. I don't need a second method to unlock.

It won't be a second method. It will be the first and only one.

Why only 2022? It's a pandemic, which rendered FaceID useless (masks), come on, you had more than a year to "innovate"
Maybe that’s why Apple wants to bring their staff back to office, ie productivity dropped and what was planned for 2021 has slipped to 2022. 😂

TouchID is lacking compared to FaceID. iPhone doesn’t need under screen TouchID. Mask mandates are getting lifted (even though some people think it’s going to last forever for some reason). Meanwhile Android manufacturers still haven’t figured out FaceID. Apple has nothing to worry about.
You should probably risk a look outside Apples walled garden before you post such a statement.

My Huawei Mate 20 Pro from 2018 has FaceID (same tech as Apple) working beautifully. It also has an under screen finger print sensor. Because sometimes the phone can't see my face. For example when it's flat on a desk or when I have a helmet on, or when I wear a mask or safety googles. Then I login with fingeprint.

While this rumour has been running about for the last few years, with the current requirement for masks in a lot of places that will no doubt continue for some time, it has been very frustrating that FaceID has been rendered almost useless.

I will probably continue to wear a mask going forward (haven't had a cold or any illness in 18 months) and if FaceID is the only way forward, I'll probably need to look at alternatives that offer some sort of fingerprint entry and validation.

Touch ID under the screen has been coming in “next year’s iPhone” for about 4 years now. I’ll believe it when it’s being demoed in a keynote.

I’ve been wearing a mask since day 1 of the mask mandate in my state. FaceID hasn’t bothered me as much as some people. Besides work, I only go to the grocery store, fast food drive thru, and kids schools, so I don’t complain about putting my passcode in. Along with a tweak on my jailbroken iphone 12 Pro Max, I am able to unlock my phone (still on 14.1) with my watch. Besides I plan to hold onto my Pro Max for another year, so if it debuted then, that’s all fine and dandy. No complaints there.

...and whether there's a 13/13S mini is really going to depend on the sales this year. There's a LOT of purchases that were deferred due to the pandemic - I'm sure phones were just one of them.

Me, I think there will be a surge of iPhone mini sales this fall.

It seems like…waiting for it to never happen…
retired my 6s few months ago and got a refurb 11pro, still miss Touch ID so much but at least battery is fantastic now!!

I fully understand and respect people who want TouchID back. However, it'll never replace FaceID.

Secure FaceID (not foolable with a picture like on Android phones) is one of my favorite features on iPhone. It works perfectly. I'm quite happy to give up some screen space for it. Apple is never going to take it away because there are a lot of people like me who will never accept using a phone which doesn't have this feature at this point.

still seems ridiculous

The low-end 6.7-inch

Why is the LOW end getting the largest screen size (same as the Pro Max) yet they'll get rid of the 5.4" mini?

So low end wants an iPhone the same size as the Pro Max yet not get all those features? And people said 'mini' gives a bad name, wonder how those Pro Max users gonna feel? Like 11 Pro users with Xrs looking the same?

The fingerprint unlock on teh back of my Pixel 3 XL also allowed me to scroll pages and menus, I really liked that and it felt natural to do it, whilst holding the device and it was great not having to obstruct my view of the screen whilst scrolling.

It might not be the most aesthetically pleasing option for people to have it on the back, but couple it with faceID (so you don't have to lift it up if it is sat on a table etc..) and you have yourself a very useable device.

If they can do it with the power button, all the better. One thing is for sure, the under screen option is a poor option, doubly so if you use a screen protector. I have it on my S10 and am not a fan.
The index finger sensor on the back of the Pixel phones is the best I've used, too. It's the most naturally fluid motion to pick up the phone and have it unlocked before even seeing the screen.

Look forward to the 2022 iPhones which is when I’ll upgrade next “. Touch ID under the display should have been a priority this year, feels like it’s rumoured every year, but hope Kuo is wrong and it comes this Sept as considering the circumstances it should be a priority upgrade for apple IMO.

Absolutely agree, forgot to include that - I'd be unlocking it as I pulled it out of my pocket.
Also, with the likes of Nova launcher, you can set it so double tap would lock it again. So functional.

Supply line timelines are longer than that.

I resisted but FaceID is >>> TouchID.

The pandemic was a short time event and it would be very bad planning to reflexively make design changes especially with so much early ambiguity about how long people would wear masks.

Are you forgetting how fast TouchID was? It was like it unlocked before you even touched the sensor, it was so fast! :D

If the new TouchID under the screen performs similarly, I think you'll see a lot of people ditching FaceID.

Wonder if the 48mp means we get periscope lens in 2022 and not 2023 like kuo updated his timeframe for

Using the s21 ultra it’s made me realise how great Unsee display fingerprint scanner is

It has always been stated that it will supplement Touch ID not replace it. Would just add a second option where you can use one or the other or both.
