If they have USB-C

Can I ask, what is the big deal with that USB-C on an iPhone that everyone seems to be going nuts about it? For me, I wouldn't care less if they remove the port altogether. I hardly ever use it. It makes sense for me on the iPad since I connect a lot of external devices to it, but none to my iPhone.

Oh my gawd man! why do people insist that they want USB-C on the iPhone? Lightning is a better, more durable connector!

It's not insisting on USB-C per se, it is insisting on having just one port and the one charger to rule them all. The Macs have it, the iPads have it, the iPhones stubbornly keep going with lightning. As the odd one out, they need to change.

I dunno. With 5G not fully a thing yet...are these phones even going to be able to take full advantage?

Based on what?

USB-C not only has better transfer speeds.... it’s more efficient at charging devices

USB-C FTW!
Lightning is a much better connector for “iPhones”. Manufacturers have been playing fast and loose with the USB standard to get these crazy charging speeds and now it can be difficult to know what cable will do what. Will this cable charge at 5W, 18W, or 30W? Most of the time it’s just trial and error. With Pixel 4 it won’t even charge with some cables. And don't get me started on USB-C to 3.5mm adapters. With Lightning you know it’s gonna work.

How about a quick explanation of what this means?

mmWave is a high frequency type of 5G that has poor coverage and is largely used in the U.S. It offers higher speed but with very poor range.

Sub-6 is the more common type of 5G found globally with a much better compromise between speed and range.

My X seems to do just fine and connect to WiFi most of the time, so this is not gonna make much a difference. Besides, how much faster can you post a reply on Macrumors?

The iPhone X is turning out to be the most durable iPhone for me. Not just in physical durability (I’ve never had it in a case and it’s still pristine) but also in how it remains modern, fast and with a long lasting battery.

I was on an on/off year upgrade schedule but when they said that the iPhone X was a leap ahead, it was true. This phone hasn’t aged. I skipped the Xs and the 11 Pro and from the looks of it, I might take it into its fourth year.

I believe 5G is going to drive a sales bonanza for Apple later this year. Pretty much everyone will want to upgrade because the massive speed boost will be so meaningful for everyone. The next-gen 5G iPhones will break all sales records.

Don't be daft. 5G roll-out will take many, many years and people are now looking to cut costs where they can, not pay a massive monthly uplift for 5G which they probably won't be able to get.

Even here in the UK it's only been rolled out to some cities and even then the coverage can be best described as patchy.

If they have USB-C, fix the atrocious Mail app, and at least reduce the notch, I might, MIGHT be tempted back.

Then again, it also depends on what Samsung does between now and then as well.

Given that I'm not invested in wearables or an ecosystem (too much, I have 3 Macs and LOVE macOS), Sammy gives me the best single-device-in-my-pocket experience. I can't stand to use my wife's iPhone (although I've been getting trained up...quite unintuitive OS it has become).
USBC simply ain’t coming to the iPhone, sorry man.

I don’t want 5G... it is useless and potentially has health implications
tin Foil hat on and don’t buy the new iPhone. Problem solved.

I have X and I don't see any reason to move to new model if the nodge stays and charging will be done via lightning or wireless only. Current 4g/LTE speeds are more than enough to watch and listen online content so 5g seems pointless to me. Also with X I get very good photos and the phone is snappy so improvements on camera or the processor are secondary.

I'll likely upgrade from my Xs but I'm more interested in enhanced battery life and a better camera than 5G. If they offered a 4G only iPhone at a lower price I'd go for it and switch to 5G after 2-3 years during my next upgrade

I dont need or want mmWave 5G. I still dont see how this is going to work in any market. ( Not saying it doesn't work, but the usefulness of it in majority of area is questionable )

But I want Sub 6Ghz 5G, as a matter of fact I hope everyone switches to Sub 6 5G ASAP so we can move on from out current quite limited 4G network.

Tl;dr- If all you want is a slightly better reception in all cases, and faster 4G most of the time you want Sub 6 5G.

As for the health implications - nothing is really proven.
I have an antenna a couple of hundred meters away from me, just outside of my bedroom

My country has, AFAIK, one of the highest 5G penetrations of the world - and at the same time, resistance in the population is mounting. Several towns and cities have refused to allow new deployments.

I never work remotely via a tethered phone, so I don't get the need for higher speeds or lower latencies.

Well I don't know about other people but all my other devices use USB-C and logistically it would be easier to have only one charger with you where ever you are.
Regarding other people, there are a billion Lightning devices and another couple billion Lightning cables. Compare that to maybe 50 million USB-C laptops and 5 to 10 million iPads.

So yeah, not going to happen. Lightning already supports USB3 speeds and USB-PD for charging. It’s not nearly as robust a connector, and unlike Mac and iPad, there’s nothing to be gained. Zero chance imo.

I think the 2020 iPhones will be really good but I'll be perfectly fine with my iPhone 11. Besides, the 5G isn't anything to get excited about considering how poor signal roll out is in the UK. It was years before lots of people got 4G and the ones that did were paying through the teeth through the only network (EE).

A new Airpods will come with the purchase of iPhone 12 and the people are sick of the terrible notch screen.
iPhone 12 won’t be bundled with airpods, that would add another $100 to the selling price unnecessarily, since many already have them or don’t want them. And relatively few care about the notch or think it’s “terrible” 🙄

Apple doesn’t care what a couple hundred trolls or members of the Apple hate club think. They’ve sold upwards of a couple hundred million iPhones with the notch; the people have spoken.

The notch, though likely smaller in the coming years, could easily be around for another 5-10 years. Get over it, or get a different phone 🤷‍♂️
