There are a multitude of reasons to put out a new generation of the SE line. Form factor and price point are the most important reasons from a sales point of view.

Apple’s current iPhone lineup doesn’t offer a phone with the smaller form factor of older iPhone models. For some would be iPhone owners that is a show stopper and for users like that their only option for buying a new smart phone is going with an Android based device. Yes you can buy a refurbished 6S or iPhone SE but some people don’t want refurbished devices. They want a new device with the latest hardware and software features possible in a small form factor smart phone.

Price point is a huge issue as well. Apple needs a less expensive iPhone model that it can sell to budget minded consumers in developed countries and to mainstream consumers in developing nations who also can’t justify spending $449.00 on a smart phone.

There is a market for smaller, more affordable iPhones in both developed and developing nations. Apple would be derelict in its duties to its shareholders and to consumers if they didn’t release a product that can compete in that market.

A screen to screen on an 6/7/8 chassis and spec-ed would sell millions.
True, and the 5.4” iPhone 11S Pro (12 Pro?) rumored to be released next year will be slightly less wide and less tall than the 6/7/8, though thicker. But it’ll be priced at about $999.

The 11S Pro is rumored to be slightly smaller chassis than the 6/7/8?

If it’s 5.42” as rumored, yes it’ll be smaller than the 6/7/8, assuming the bezels don’t increase in size. Something like 1-2mm narrower in width and 4-5mm shorter in height. Even a little bit smaller than that if they manage to shrink the bezels any.

It would be nice to see it price lower than the 11 Pro, maybe $949. The Pro Max is rumored to grow to 6.7”, and they should be able to maintain $1,099. The wildcard in pricing is 5G, people are talking about $300 higher. If that’s the case, I think we can assume 5G will be optional.

Man I’d be all over it.

I like smaller phones since I keep it in my front pants pocket. I’m holding out for it myself. I have a 6S that is still quite usable, surprisingly fast. But it’s getting to be that time.

When the X came out I had it for a couple months and gave it to our son. And continued to use my 8. When the 11 Pro came out I got one and still have my 8. I don’t use the 11 Pro anymore. I much prefer the pocketability and compactness of the 8. And yes I don’t mind the screen size at all. I have work issued cargo pants with a cell phone pocket and the 11 Pro is too big. The 8 fits perfectly.

IThey’re not in the business of trying to kill a product that (enough) people want. That’s not how you make the big bucks—that’s how you go broke.

Happens all the time. When companies can push buyers to more profitable items, and away from lower-margin products, they simple kill the low margin item. Far from "going broke"...quite the contrary, it can be a sound strategy.

But over time, as phones became no longer a phone, but a computer—for many their only computing device—

Now THIS I agree with! For those at the low end of the market (who can't afford a smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop, and 5 Apple 4K TVs), a single device is all they can afford. Which is why it is so ironic that most refer to the iPhone as the "entry level" or "cheap" iPhone and imply that it is for budget-conscious consumers. Actually, the SE is the ultimate high-end luxury device - for those that can affor multiple, specialized devices for every purpose.

All those apps, and many more—most, don’t you think?—offer a better UX on a larger screen than on a smaller screen. You don’t have to believe that; it makes no difference to me. But instead of pretending that if only Apple would build you your perfect** iPhone, they’d have a sure-fire hit on their hands, maybe consider the possibility that the time has come and gone for a “real” SE2. Or not, suit yourself.

First i disagree with the assertion that the UX is better on a larger screen. In fact it is so much worse. The 4" screen on the SE can be manipulated with one hand, creating the ultimate luxury experience for the user who wants to use the other hand for anything else. Finally, I have not "pretended" anything. In fact, I never claimed that an SE would be a sure-fire hit or a money-maker. I only said that we have no way of knowing what the actual market demand IS, since there is no viable choice for buyers, thus no comparable sales numbers. I am quite well suited, thank you. Why does it bother you so much that people like a 4" phone? I hope that you and every other new iPhone buyer enjoys their giant phones. Really! Cheers.

1) We’re not talking about companies, we’re talking about Apple. They’re going to price where they need to so they can make their margin. But if there’s not enough buyers at the price they need to charge, that’s when there’s a problem. That’s when products get discontinued.

2) The SE never sold very well. The 6/6S/7/8 sold hundreds of millions of units. Apple does a ton of market research on consumer preferences, so we don’t know what the demand is, but you can bet Apple—and all the other phone manufacturers—are quite aware.

3) It doesn’t bother me at all that people want 4” phones; they can want 3.5” phones for all I care. What bothers me is that SE fans refuse to accept the fact that relatively few want what they want. It’s no different than the 17” MBP or the Xserve or AirPort products. Not enough people want it to make it worthwhile for Apple to continue it. So they are discontinued. If customer preferences shift, Apple may make a small phone again one day. It’s a business decision, plain and simple.

Stop expecting Apple to cater to your unprofitable niche. It’s not worth it to them. They’re not missing out on some great market opportunity, and neither are the dozens of Android manufacturers who also don’t make small phones. You wanting it is not enough. You’re not entitled to your perfect iPhone. Calling the SE the “ultimate high-end luxury device” doesn’t make it so.

4) My guess is that Apple will indeed sell 20-30 million of these “SE2” in year one, and if they could make a Plus size (5.5”) at the same $399 selling price, they might sell 50 million (but would cannibalize the iPhone 11 to an unacceptable degree).

The iPhone “Classic” will likely be more like an iPhone 6 than an 8. It would be very surprising if it features wireless charging. It will likely be all aluminum to keep cost down. It will also likely have iPhone 8 (perhaps XR, but doubtful) cameras, 3GB RAM, 64GB, storage, and A13 SoC, Touch ID, LCD display. It will be the minimum required to run today’s applications and what Apple has planned for 2020-2021. At $399 it will be a phone for the developing world, kids, nursing home residents, and those who want the very basics in a phone/pocket computer. Most who buy this will never have heard of the iPhone SE. The small phone in the Apple lineup will be the 5.4 inch iPhone 12 Pro. Apple will have successfully disassociated size from price, which began with the larger (than XS) XR. Apple knows what it is doing.

RIP? Don't think so. Those companies still make phone models much less expensive then this rumoured SE at $399. $399 US is still too expensive in many markets around the world.

I am pretty confident that this 399 SE2 will cost 599 here in India. Whereas Mi phones start onwards of 99 bucks and you can get their midrange stuff for like $149 or so. Their mid end stuff for like 199 or so.

Based on iPhone 8 means it'll be glass not aluminium. Otherwise it would've been based on the iPhone 7. And glass most likely means wireless charging.

I do believe it will look exactly like the iPhone 8. Maybe with an additional "SE" badge on the back. 2020 5.4" iPhone should be more expensive than 399$.

That’s for sure! I can’t imagine it’ll be much less expensive than the 5.8” Pro’s $999 price tag. I don’t think the 6.7” will be any higher than the 6.5” Pro Max’s $1,099. Those sizes will probably stick around for 4+ years.
