I like how the the majority of posts skipped right past the AR glasses and went right to the iPad portion of the news.
9" ... mini? We're getting close to the original size of the "regular" sized iPad.

Also, as an owner of a Google Glass, if Apple does come out with some copy-cat, I REALLY hope they make it easier to change the battery. All the "guides" I've seen on replacing the Google Glass battery involves destructively ripping off the plastic side.

You know Apple. There won't be any battery replacement for those glasses. You can't replace batteries on any of their products at this point.

Just a few days ago, I said it would be cool if they launched a pro style iPad mini with an edge-to-edge screen. I imagine that’s what they’re doing here to keep the form factor small.

The 10.8” size screams to me a size that can utilize a full size keyboard with 18 mm key spacing but which does not have enough bezel space for conventional Touch ID. The bezels would be slightly bigger than the bezels on the 11” Pro but still pretty small.

That means it would have either under-the-screen Touch ID, or else Face ID. That’s why I favour this being a mid-priced model, aka the iPad Air 4. However, I cannot rule out the possibility this is an entry level iPad with under-the-screen Touch ID. An entry level 10.8” iPad definitely wouldn’t have Face ID though.

I wouldn't be surprised if they took the 10.5" chassis and enlarged it to fit a 10.8" display with a Home button. Apple took a similar step with the 9.7/10.2" iPad.

11" iPad Air with in-display Touch ID and thin-bezels leaves plenty of room for a low-cost 10.8" iPad.

I think the Apple glasses are going to be an awesome product!

It would be really cool to visit museums and have the glasses give you information on museum pieces or art that you’re looking at and history about them.

National Parks would be another great place where the Apple glasses could give you information - almost like a guided tour while going through the park!

That's an interesting use case and I wonder how it will play out.
Ten years ago I explored the castle near Montreux on Lake Geneva using an app that gave you information as you walked around the castle. It worked well, but the app was not maintained and stopped working at some point (maybe when Apple dropped 32-bit apps, maybe even earlier).
The basic problem is financing -- who's going to pay to develop these virtual tours, and who will pay to buy/rent them?

Ultimately I think what's needed is a "tour" framework that's doing all the heavy lifting, so that the museum/national park/whatever just has to insert their content. That sort of idea never took off for phones, as far as I know. Maybe AR glasses will be different? Or maybe this time Apple will kickstart the process by providing their own framework rather than waiting for someone else to do it?

Also, I really don't want to see the 11" iPP disappear, but I haven't heard much about that size in future rumors. I really like that size as it is easy to carry around and has the right amount of screen real estate for reading and consuming content. Now the iPad mini seems to be getting a little larger... sigh.
Indeed, would love to know what is the plan with the iPP 11” strange that not mentioned in rumours.

Why is this any better/different than Google Glass? Everyone crapped all over that when they came out. Suddenly everyone thinks the same product cranked out by Apple will be amazing.
I don't recall seeing a post stating that Apple's will be better than Google's. At least not here.

AR tech is starting to hit its stride, and Apple is clearly pushing towards adoption.

We're excited for its possibilities, not the corporate partisanship you're making it sound like.

Cool, an even more egregious and socially mandated privacy infringement.

If I can see you today I can see you with AR Glasses. They are not X-ray specs, they don't let me see what I couldn't already see.
If you want to rant, rant about telescopes and binoculars...

Seems good for niche activities, but not for wearing all day long. Imagine the distraction using this walking on the street or driving, and when you are at home/work its better just to pop the phone. It may be useful for health/doctors or some work that requires hands free.

Lord. This was one Google fail that was not because it was Google. Is this really what people want? Strange glasses or clip-ons, people twitching their head, and the paranoia that you’re being recorded?

How about we just wait and see before automatically assuming that it’ll be exactly like Google or any other company’s offering.

People don’t know what they want until it’s shown to them. I think after all this time it’s fair to say Apple knows what they’re doing...

Alot like people using their phones while walking, driving, sitting, eating, every moment of their lives etc. At least with AR glasses you will be looking at the world more often rather than a small rectangle in your hand.

ANYONE SEEN THIS FUTURE AR VIDEO? ITS TOO REAL

Are there people in this world that want to have a pair of VR glasses attached on their head all day long, every day and looking at the real world through those hi tech lenses? I don't see how apple will be successful with this kind of product. I just don't see it. Yeah yeah, I know people were saying the same for the iPhone, iPad and the watch, but I don't know this just seems so unnecessary to sell to the every day consumers. For specific scientific appliances in certain industries or assistance for people with certain disabilities? yeah, I can see that.

Your eyes are your conduits for sight. What sort of conduit will those glasses be?

Is your smart phone a one way street?
When it goes two ways is it always with your explicit permission and understanding?

What do we lose when this toy becomes mainstream?

What if someone wants to opt out? Where do those people go in order to not end up as cached data?
Do they just give up? After all, we've been socially engineered into willingly handing over our data thus far.

Should we draw a line?

Progress isn't always progress.

Notably, that first AR headset rumored for next year would probably not be called Apple Glasses since they are not glasses. Apple Goggles? I'm curious what they will call them. It makes a lot of sense that Apple would be creating a utility-first AR product (probably marketed mainly toward creators) and a fashion-first AR product. These release date rumors would only apply to the second fashion-focused AR device. There are so many compromises to fitting all this tech in a pair of glasses, I'm sure they will keep two devices around for awhile. I see Apple Glasses working everywhere initially just being a companion to the iPhone. Possibly low enough resolution that you will still use your phone screen for most things. Apple Goggles (or whatever) may be high resolution and replace your screen. This seems to be sooner than previously reported. I thought it was 2023 before. With recent leaks talking about seeing prototypes, maybe they are ahead of schedule?

I visited several museums that used iPod Classics before iPhones came out.

Did you read my entire (not very long) post?...
There was a period over which this was popular, then it faded away. THAT is the point.
It's relevant because I think the reason it faded away is that apps were expected by the public, but apps are not cheap unless Apple provides frameworks that do almost all the heavy lifting (and so will stay maintained over 10+ years as iOS HW and SW changes)

Why keep both iPad and iPad Air?

iPad is basically iPad Cheap. ~$330, A10
iPad Air is basically iPad Medium. ~$500, A12

Is this a sensible way to run the product line, rather than, say iPad year N and iPad year N-1, the way the phones are done? Personally I don't think so, but then I don't know what the parameters are.
It may be that the school market demands absolute cheapness, enough so that you can't get there just by shipping the year N-1 model.
Or maybe the iPad update schedule is still random enough that no-one at Apple wants to gamble on their being a clear distinction to consumers of "iPad new" vs "iPad last year"?

Another way to slice and dice it would be iPad SE (updates every three years say), iPad, and iPad Pro. Maybe that's what they will evolve to?

I can read the little info panel in most museums just fine - not sure if a half translucent panel over my eyes is an improvement there.

And when I’m in a park I may not even want intrusions from tech.

Will the iPads be following the iPad 11" aspect ratio? It certainly makes September-November interesting - perhaps giving Apple something to release early doors if iPhone 12 is delayed.

Apple Glasses would be a very exciting release.

Let’s hope not. I like 4:3 way more for the portrait mode times.
