I don’t see a threat from Qualcomm, nor do I think the foldable phone market will ever become large. I could be wrong, but I just don’t think it’s worth the r&d.

Frankly I think the importance of the SoC is massively overestimated in places like MacRumors. I could of course be wrong, and one would of course assume that Apple's approach is backed up by thorough market research, but I've never met anyone who wasn't a techie who was generally interested in whether their device had an A15 or an 8 Gen 1 or a 765G and what the exact difference is between the two.

Generally these things deliver enough performance for the vast majority of users. Battery life and efficiency I think are the primary area of concern and Apple seems to be doing better here, but compared to Android flagships I don't think we're talking life-alteringly different either.

I think the same about AR glasses but there we are. I seriously do not think everyone is going to around wearing them.
I think the Apple VR/AR Reality project will become a big market, and the AR project would be a natural progression from that — I just don’t see it happening this decade.

More advanced software will benefit from a more advanced processor. Software that hits a performance ceiling because of the processor will suffer. Subtle differences, but they all add up to a better experience.

Yep. iPhone 15 is where it is at (the least). They will definitely stick with 2 year enhanced (*cough*old*cough*) silicons to the regular devices to upsell you to Pro with the newer silicons. Camera differentiation will be back. Colours exclusive for the Pro models. Do I dare to say that regulars will see smaller sizes and Pro max have bigger sizes. This 14-PLUS model will give people a taste of long battery life people hunger for in the near future, so they will use that for the Pro models.

Also the Pro's will get the new cooling engineering it now needs.

Back to the iPhone 7 strategy.

What Apple has done is shifted its entire new iPhone range price point for all markets, because they have scrapped the Mini and thus increased the starting price for the new phones. They’ll then increase the Pro model feature set to try and push more people to the premium models. Because they have nothing to offer in true innovation, then that’s the only way they can really increase profits. Don’t be surprised to see a price increase in all markets for the iPhone Pro models next year along with more feature disparity.

There is generally at least one feature in the new iPhone that makes me consider an upgrade even if it’s fleeting and I ultimately decide against it. That simply isn’t the case with the iPhone 14 Pro. I had an iPhone X and stood Pat until the iPhone 12. There was enough of a camera improvement that combined with 5G made me pull the trigger. There’s been nothing in the 13 or 14 Pro that has made me even think about it. I’m not sure that USB-C, WiFi 6e and the newer 5G modem that opens up additional spectrum for AT&T users plus the standard hardware upgrades (new SoC, improved camera, etc.) will be enough. It may well be that I don’t upgrade again until the 16 in two years

The sage could be said for the AirPods Pro 2 and AppleWatch Series 8. There’s nothing compelling in AirProds Pro 2 that I’m aware of at this point to make an upgrade worth it and ditto for the Apple Watch Series 8. I’m still happily on the GPS version of the AppleWatch series 4. They’ve added nothing in the way or new sensors, features or a product redesign that makes me want to upgrade the now 4 year old device. I figured for sure there’d be something in the 8 that when combined with the other post 4 enhancements that there would be a strong case for an upgrade but no. An always on slightly bigger display and better battery life plus the new sensors just aren’t enough to justify an upgrade. I was hoping they’d have more up their sleeve with the temperature monitor or some kind of new sensor in there that simply hadn’t leaked out yet but there wasn’t much there for somebody who doesn’t have a use case for the temperature monitor and who has already been diagnosed with sleep apnea.

apple "innovation" = how we can charge even more for something while offering incremental improvements over the last model.

for context my car is worth 2 x iPhone 14 pro Max devices

A great strategy to lose market share. Add the absurd prices and the picture is complete. We are waiting for the rise of tensions in the US/China relations to see Apple bend over its knees and have to relaunch with something more concrete than cost containment and customer robbery strategies.

Apple, how much more can you milk the boring soap bar form factor? Its time to move on to Foldables ASAP, you are giving this whole market to Samsung for free. Don't get left behind before its too late.

Why wait one iPhone generation to expand the island to the whole line-up, I don’t get it. It’s not even a “pro” thing. Next is the notch on the MacBook that will give way to islands…

I miss the old days when there was just one iPhone, the new iPhone. Now it is Pro, it is Max, it is SE, it is previous generation models. I'm daily Macrumos visitor for many years and yet, I'll be struggling to remember all the difference between the iPhones in the current portfolio. What is the difference between iPhone 13 and 14? Is iPhone 12 Pro better than iPhone 14? What happened with Apple's slogan "we focus only on few things"?!
Its rather unfortunate, but Apple was pretty much forced into it because of Samsung. With more competitors entering the ring, it will only get more saturated.

I’m confused there already is differentiation between the 14 and 14 pro…. Only the pro models have the dynamic island, always on display, and the upgraded camera.

Sure, but I don't think we've seen any real evidence (yet?) that this is happening for the vast majority of users. Yes there's probably stuff at the higher end where people edit photos and videos on the go, but most people do nothing on their A14 iPhone 13 that they couldn't just as well on a 765G Pixel 5 despite the massive difference in power -- and that phone had amazing battery life as well.

Bummer. I like shiny new features, but I refuse to carry a phone the size of a small tablet around. Hopefully this will just be differentiation between standard and pro and not standard - pro - pro max - pro max ultra - pro max super ultra - pro extreme max ultra pad mini.

with the pericope zoom lens next year i'm expecting we will see it being named iphone 15 ultra and the regular model 15 pro.

Is this where the Pro Max becomes Ultra?
Can you imagine the lineup?
"Here is the iPhone SE, iPhone, iPhone Plus, iPhone Pro, iPhone Max, and iPhone Ultra. We are very pleased with our team for creating our best and fastest phones yet." 🤦‍♂️

. The only differentiating features between the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, and iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, are display size and battery life.
That's not true. There is also the chip, the camera, display quality, the different cutout, ProRes recording, and many more differences.
