So Apple basically will be releasing their version of the Echo Show
I have one of those and I don’t like it for my needs. I simply want it to show the time in big as letters and maybe the weather forecast next / underneath it but it doesn’t seem to be possible? I have it next to my bed but I can hardly make out the time, especially when you are waking up in the middle of the night like just show me time time!

It would be weird if this replaced the current display-less HomePod because people who put their HomePods in places that are not highly accessible would have a display that they can’t really use which is a waste, and people who pair their HomePods would have two identical displays near each other which is a waste, and people who use their HomePods as TV speakers will be forced to have speakers with out of place looking displays on them that will probably not be used because who wants to stand next to their TV to use a smaller screen? There are too many instances where you don't want your speaker and display in the same place.

And it would be weird if this replaced an ATV because why would anyone need a display on their ATV when it’s already hooked up to a giant display (their TV)? Plus if people already have better speakers then it would be wasting this device’s display AND speaker.

If this device is supposed to put FaceTime on your TV, then I presume you would get one of these and put it center with the TV? Again, it seems wasteful to have a speaker and display on it when you have your TV screen there and probably better stereo speakers. For those who do already have good speakers, a better product would simply be a small inconspicuous camera to attach to the top of your TV that connects (wirelessly or wired) to your ATV (probably cleanly hidden away in the TV stand).

It’s just weird to combine too many things into one device, unless it’s offered as an alternative only, not replacement.

Here's my theory.

I don't think Apple is that into the smart speaker space. They're not as invested into it as they are, say, the tablet space.

But I think it's one step on the roadmap for them to somewhere else, so they had to be there. And it will tie into the AR/VR glasses, too. It's something to do with augmenting the things we do in the home. Something about delivering content, of course (because that's ultimately Apple's vertical). But I can't see yet the full picture.

Agree with people about siri needing to improve. I have an echo show and that thing is literally instant when you say alexa, even from the other side of the room. Siri, takes way too long to respond.

Hilarious how they keep pretending Siri works correctly, like many of their other apps, maps, music, safari, etc. I mean look at Music, they’ve just released a classical genre app while their main one still carries a pretty subpar experience.

Whats next… Safari U.S. privacy edition?

Valid points.

Perhaps Apple’s strategy in this instance will be the inverse of Steve Jobs’ famous “these are NOT three separate devices!” speech.
Wait but ”not three separate devices“ was Steve’s speech lol. Inverse would be “not one combined device”. But this is one combined device, like the iPhone, but I’m betting it won’t be as popular.

Seems like this year is a boring apple year but next year will be better unless everything is delayed like always haha

Microsoft is going all-in with the revised Bing, powered by the same language model as ChatGPT. It won't be long before we see smart speakers that use this too.

Apple is so far behind - Siri struggle to understand much of what you say - it can't even recognise the words, and apple don't seem to have done anything in the AI space to act intelligently on questions. All Siri does is attempt to do a web search.

A genuine breakout product is going to need to right these wrongs. At least include Audio-apps like Radio stations, access to audible etc.

It's obvious to me that Apple's competition in this space is not Amazon, but Sonos. I would expect an Apple HomePod Soundbar with integrated camera and Apple TV before a HomePod with a screen.

This is very amusing to me. This is the kind of HomePod I wanted to see. Something different, something to move our understanding of what the HomePod could be on. This further shows up how embarrassing that re-released HomePod was.

I’m very keen to see how ardent Apple apologists like @Alan Wynn celebrate this whilst also resolving their previous very long arguments that such innovation was superfluous and completely unrequired. (https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...i-4-limitation-and-more.2379288/post-31938596)
