Apple needs to concentrate on productivity, not on glitter and things no one needs. With all the power of Apple silicon, and tons of memory, why can’t my iPad Pro support languages like C+ or others? The file system is a crap show, and I doubt most of Apples iOS people even understand it. All that power, and nowhere to go with it. And now this? It’s just a slap in the face. I will never buy a folder. Bells and whistles. How about porting Numbers for Mac over to the ipad? I truly hope Mr Kuo was high when he created his message. And I also hope Apple returns to the router business, as do everyone I know that’s ever had one. I still use my old “cigarette pack” router. There’s an Apple app for it. A new app could provide users with a variety of security options. Ok, I’m done ranting.
Disappointed in Cleveland…

How is that a problem that needs solving?
Well imagine a iPhone 14 Pro Max and all its glory, but with one simple motion it turns into the size of a 13 mini which you can store in your pocket easily. Isn’t this a good thing? Surely it is. Now imagine the same thing with an iPad Pro 12.9“ transforming into a iPad mini.

No that sounds idiotic.

That’s not how it works. Go look at the foldable market.
No thanks. Not remotely interested in the crap that has been thrown at all. Nor do those failed products set the rules for anything.

The main allure of a foldable is that it is portable.

So we take a portable device and absolutely ruin it so that it can be...portable. Got it. No wonder this concept has been an abysmal failure.

It seems more likely to me that they are all the same rumor with different sources only understanding one piece of the puzzle.

It is possible that the OLED iPad is the folding product.
That could be the case. Personally, I think when/if a foldable iPad lands, it will have OLED. But I imagine they will have already debuted OLED in the iPad Pro line before debuting it in a foldable iPad.

Why?

Apple knows they have a significant enough of an early-adopter user base that will jump on any new device, more than justifying any R&D that went into any new form factor. So why introduce something like OLED into what will likely be an auto-buy device, when they can do so for the iPad Pro line first? The latter will give the iPad Pro line an easy marketing talking point while gobbling up sales from A) those current iPad Pro uses wanting a Pro with OLED and/or B) from those holding off an an iPad Pro purchased until OLED lands. This is a very familiar page out of the Tim Cook Playbook for Maximizing Profits.

You forgot the biggest benefit, users being able to flex the ability to buy an expensive Apple product to others.
Just imagine the envious looks you’ll get when you pull out the iPad Ultra-Fold while sipping a latte at Starbucks, unfolding the 8.5” x 11” iPad to its fully open 11” x 17” size with a glorious 19” diagonal OLED screen. The Magic Keyboard they make for it will be so big, it will have a full sized Magic Trackpad included and the combined iPad Ultra-Fold and Magic Keyboard cover will only weigh 6 lbs, because carbon fiber, which everyone knows is super expensive.

And with iPadOS 18, Stage Manager will allow you to connect multiple iPad Ultra-Folds together, because one won’t be enough. Everyone will know you’re super rich and important…

What is the allure of a folding iPad? I’m just not seeing a need for it.

How do people still ask this question? Can it be any more obvious? A screen TWICE the size of the device's footprint is an advantage. Getting a full size 13" iPad screen in a device that folds down in size to that of an iPad mini is an enticing proposition. Getting an iPad that folds halfway to be used in a laptop configuration or unfolded fully to be used as a tablet is appealing.

Current devices from other brands have limitations in terms of a higher price, a tradeoff of glass vs plastic and a visible crease, but we don't know what Apple's approach will be. But the concept of a bigger screen in a smaller device has merit nonetheless. This doesn't require much creativity and foresight to envision the appeal of these devices.

20-inch iPad makes perfect sense as a replacement for 14-inch MacBook Pro

Still don't get it. If I get a large screen device (like 13"), the more common case will be wanting to use it with a keyboard. So how does folding help anything? If I get a smaller screen device, folding isn't really going to help with portability until we get to something that folds into a phone size, at which point I'd want it to be a phone.

You are thinking of it in your own personal case uses.

For others whose uses maybe more creatively / graphically oriented that the size suggested maybe a godsend. Even more if that tablet can folded to a more conventional size to be taken to other offices or in the field. In those cases a keyboard is a complementary device, and not necessarily a necessity.

I dunno. What’s the purpose of a foldable ipad? I don’t get it. A foldable phone yes. But why a foldable ipad? Why?iPads are already lighter & more portable than laptops. So what’s the benefit of folding them? Unless it’s a foldable ipad mini and an iphone all in one. That makes more sense. As does the iPad rumor running iOS AND MacOS and docking into a keyboard.

... and readily usable (I don't want to unfold my phone everytime I use it).
Most foldable phones have a full screen you can use while it is folded which makes them the same as your iPhone, except thicker because there is a larger screen inside.

If it's 4K or better resolution, it could be a nice sidecar accessory for a 14 inch MacBook Pro.

I dunno if a foldable ipad is going to be interesting. Folded its going to be thick, unfolded it will be large but unstable. Don’t really see many news cases other than newspapers and design.

Since selling my iPad mini 4, this may be enough to win me over to a tablet again. Given it will offer portability with the foldable display and more screen estate than the mini.
