Say what you will about the line, but Surface got it right with the integrated kickstand.
As a surface user, I must prefer the magic keyboard. Takes less space and is more rigid.
Huh? I'm not following you at all.

A 6" iPhone that unfolds and becomes a 12" iPad would be usable at both sizes, but for different things.
A 10" iPad that unfolds and becomes a 20" iPad would likewise be usable at both sizes, but for different things.

What does folding mean to you? Because I have no interest in a device that folds just to make it smaller when I'm not using it. No effing way.
Your math is wrong.

It sounds interesting but my current iPad is already good enough. This kind of just sounds like a Mac with just screen.

While some of us (mainly beyond 30’s) use iPad only to entertain kids, there is a whole new generation of young's that uses iPad very skilled, the workflow is far more limited but the tools exceed computers in some tasks, as templates and easy to do stuff is already half baked in mobile OS’s. And you dont have to be tied to a chair in that room of your home.

So light homework and on the go work is just enough and better than in laptops. (Though eventually, all need a laptop soon or later, the same why many mac users would need a windows computer some time ago for some random tasks)
Doesn't answer the folding question. My oldest just started college and she uses her iPad 8 about as often as her Air and it not folding in no way hampers her using it.

Folding might seem like it diminishes the size of the device but it doubles the thickness, or more, while halving the footprint. It's 6 up, half a dozen down, plus it's a less than optimal, flexible screen. Nah.

If they don't at least double the horizontal pixels, it wouldn't even approach worth doing it, let alone having a device that expensive with moving parts that can and will break. That said, a 4:3 handheld screen would be very odd. Not to mention the extra weight and leverage while holding it extended.

Not remotely. I'm making an example of something that would be worth a folding product existing in the first place. A product that is 6" folded and 8" unfolded is not worth existing.
Folding doubles either the width or height of the regular screen so its usefulness really depends on what size the folded screen is and which side the fold is on.

Well there you go making rules for the device before Apple has even made one, based on other crapware on the market.

Well, there are tons of foldable devices, this just beacuse you can have larger area when using it while easy to carry around.

It would be weird apple would make 15” tablet. 12” is still odd, doesnt fit anywhere

Nothing about my post was "making a rule".
That's exactly what you were doing. Pigeon holing this product and describing what it has to conform to just because of the lame efforts by other manufacturers...the same ones that failed to sell.

For Apple to have any chance at this product it needs to be an original concept that is useful all around. Not some proof of concept product that is not useful or better in any way.

Fits in a backpack just like a laptop does. The only other option would be your pants pocket and no one sticks their iPad in their pants pocket.

How do people still ask this question? Can it be any more obvious? A screen TWICE the size of the device's footprint is an advantage. Getting a full size 13" iPad screen in a device that folds down in size to that of an iPad mini is an enticing proposition. Getting an iPad that folds halfway to be used in a laptop configuration or unfolded fully to be used as a tablet is appealing.

Current devices from other brands have limitations in terms of a higher price, a tradeoff of glass vs plastic and a visible crease, but we don't know what Apple's approach will be. But the concept of a bigger screen in a smaller device has merit nonetheless. This doesn't require much creativity and foresight to envision the appeal of these devices.

Simple physics and math don't apply to some people! I kind of gave up on showing a picture of something big and a small pocket as even that 2nd grade description didn't make sense to some.

Also keep in mind that the crease has already been mostly solved by other oems, and Samsung is at least rumored to include a new teardrop hinge eliminating the crease. By the time Apple gets to this it's going to be a non-issue.

”Folding doubles either the width or height of the regular screen…”
This is true.

“…so it’s usefulness really depends on what size the folded screen is and which side the fold is on.”
This is also true.

This is why I don't understand folding lengthwise. The largest dimension folded is still the same

they need to solve the wrinkle in the middle of the screen, otherwise it's DOA. Having a wrinkle line going down the middle of screen will bother the crap out of me, will never get it. Hope apple solves this.

So you are limited to your own experience, luckily manufacturers are more open minded to progress.

That doesn't even make sense. Why would I carry a 2 lb+ device in my pants pocket? I don't even like carrying my iPhone in my pocket. The only reason I do is so I can use my hands. If I'm transporting an iPad of any size, it's going to be in my work bag and not on my person.

I odont know about the pants pocket thing, is something you said!, I' dont think that would be something people wants either...

but having a device that size that is half size when folded, is something very useful, first, the screen is not exposed when carrying it around, the smaller size (not volume...) would make it fit better in smaller bags, a laptop bag is something maybe you are used to, but not me, and not many people I know that travel with the laptop w/o case straight into the luggage. You can do this with regular iPad, but the screen would be much more exposed to cracks.

why laptops fold??

As a surface user, I must prefer the magic keyboard. Takes less space and is more rigid.

Your math is wrong.

The magic keyboard is about the same thickness as the surface pro with keyboard. Magic keyboard + iPad pro is about 15mm. Surface Pro 9 is 9.3mm with the kickstand but without keyboard, which isn't an option for the magic keyboard. The magic keyboard also doesn't feel particularly rigid, if anything I'd call it most definitely flimsy, especially with lap use where it will fall off your lap with only a slight touch. The magic keyboard kind of takes away the touch screen as you have to be careful, even on a desk, of not pressing too hard. The magic keyboard really changes the size and feel of the iPad, making it longer with that USB battery, much thicker, and a hell of a lot heavier and can't even be used well on the lap or airplane seat.

Let's see what else:
-Magic keyboard almost twice the price
-Magic keyboard weighs more than the iPad pro itself!!
-Magic keyboard is over twice as heavy as the Surface Pro keyboard, I won't even count the weight of the kickstand as 1) I can't find it, and 2) it's extremely minimal.
-Finally the Magic keyboard does not have any ergonomic angle, it's just flat which at least for myself is irritating on the hands/wrist when typing for long periods.

Now I'm NOT trying to sway you here, you have your preference and are 110% entitled to that preference. I just find it hard to give the magic keyboard the win in any category after having used it. The Surface pro's included kickstand is one of the most ingenious ideas for a tablet ever IMO, and instead of just copying them Apple keeps chasing it with inane designs like the magic keyboard. I get it, Apple users want the iPad as thin as possible, I'm just not in that camp.

why laptops fold??

Screens that fold twice have already been unveiled years ago as concepts with working hardware so I wouldn't count something like that out. Folding a 20" screen twice would make it pretty small length x width, although it might make it crazy thick. But I could see a case being made to having a smaller length x width laptop bag being more portable, you would have to have a pretty huge bag to carry around a 20" screen laptop.

Yep. I want the 12.9" iPad Pro, but it's just too big to carry around that much, making it foldable would be a game changer for me.
