After using a standalone portable XR/VR/AR glasses for the past month. I would not favor a foldable iPad or a Phone. The experience is unmatched.

It would be very uncharacteristic for Apple to release OLED and a brand new foldable format in the same cycle. They tend to space out their advancements over the course of several cycles. For better or worse, that is Tim's specialty. If the pending economic situation were rosier, I would have expected to see OLED make it into the iPad Pro line on 2023, the rest of the iPad line in 2024 and then maybe the foldable in 2025. But OLED & foldable in one cycle? I'd not put my money on that. Worth noting: I am not a gambler. So...

It seems more likely to me that they are all the same rumor with different sources only understanding one piece of the puzzle.

It is possible that the OLED iPad is the folding product.

Plastic screen with crease is on the level of some sticky children’s toys. Can’t imagine Apple sinking that low, even if there’s some profit to be made. If they make foldable, it must be different somehow. And also usable, unlike the current ones.

I mean I like the idea of it, but ultimately the Magic Keyboard has got me back into a place where a physical keyboard is an absolute must for an iPad.

I do not see this happening, ever. The whole concept of electronics with foldable screens is impractical, and I think the only reason Samsung is so bullish on it is because they have invested so much in this technology. There are bigger engineering opportunities than this, so I think it is a waste of resources.

Go to device for what? Not for work, I'm sure. iPad is still no where near to replacing the Mac as a work device. As a consumption device? Sure, iPad has been replacing laptops of all kinds since 2010 for people are just general consumption users. And that's a $40 billion/year business.

But someone needs to create all of that stuff you consume on the iPad. We use Macs for that.

Absolutely for work, but leisure as well.

My day starts with a cup of coffee and the news on my iPad. Depending on my schedule, I'll bring it to my desk for note taking with OneNote. If I'm traveling, I'll email and look up specifications I'm working on. On a plane (which I'm on 2-3 days a week) I'll pull it out on the flight for email and other work, or maybe to watch an in-flight movie if the flight is long enough. I use Teams to communicate with my colleagues several times a day. I'll also hold customer meetings on Teams throughout the day. During those meetings I also take notes. I'll review project documents and mark them up. I'll work with our corporate systems to share and collaborate on platforms like Salesforce, PowerBI, Word, and Excel. During onsite customer meetings, I'll connect my iPad to the customer display system for Powerpoint demos and again use OneNote for note taking.

Back at my hotel, I'll catch up on the news, then connect my iPad to the hotel room TV to watch HBO or downloaded movies. Then I'll wrap up the night by reading a Kindle book or maybe surf the web a bit or review the latest on MacRumors. At home in the evenings, I'll connect my iPad to my guitar devices and sit on the couch practicing or learning new techniques.

My average screen time on my iPad exceeds 5 hours a day. My Macbook Pro fluctuates depending on my office schedules. In the office days are probably around 4 hours. Out of the office days are less than one hour. My iPhone screen time is generally less than an hour.

What is the allure of a folding iPad? I’m just not seeing a need for it. I would much rather see a 2 lb laptop.

This was my thought exactly and you beat me to the punch. I’d likely skip it and wait for the second gen of the folding phone

This just confuses me. Why not releasing a folding iPhone instead? And how big is this iPad going to be when unfolded? Because it seems pointless unless it's essentially 8" unfolded. Does anyone really want/need an 11" folding iPad? 🤨

That's not work, bud.

Huh? I'm not following you at all.

A 6" iPhone that unfolds and becomes a 12" iPad would be usable at both sizes, but for different things.
A 10" iPad that unfolds and becomes a 20" iPad would likewise be usable at both sizes, but for different things.

What does folding mean to you? Because I have no interest in a device that folds just to make it smaller when I'm not using it. No effing way.

'What's the allure?' If you don't see it, you're not the intended customer and you can stop commenting about it. A larger iPad that folds up smaller for portability would be an absolute god send for me and no doubt other artists. Not to mention video editors etc! This isn't a hard sell, it just isn't for you.

I believe that's actually the foldable iPhone 16 Pro Max Max.
My thoughts exactly. The only reason to do a foldable iPad mini is to test the waters for an iPhone foldable. But now that I think of it, with a cellular foldable iPad mini, you can ditch the phone and treat it like a non-phone iPhone and save $$ on the monthly plan. You can still call most contacts via FaceTime, Teams, FB, etc anyways, and eliminate the spam calls so why pay the extra $$ for a $40-50 phone plan when you can pay $20 for a foldable iPad plan?

That’s not how it works. Go look at the foldable market. It doesn’t unfold to be twice the size. It usually is in the 6” range folded and unfolds to roughly 8”.

I want an iPhone that is pocketable that unfolds to become an iPad Mini. Essentially what all the foldable phones do now.

The main allure of a foldable is that it is portable. I don’t see people clamoring for a foldable tablet given it will be too big to carry in a front pocket. So you’ll have to put it in a bag regardless.
