I guess we ignore all the rhetoric about how this was just a “dev preview” then?

Telegraphing that they don’t intend to update the hardware significantly for at least THREE YEARS is a clear signal.

We can say in airquotes that Gen 1 products are aimed at developers, but this one carries a significant cost, and the hardware is sound. I’m more interested in what software improvements come over the next couple of years.

They’re also not telegraphing it. This is a rumor from a third party.

Now, put that aside. Telegraphing today that a new product is on the way soon would kill Gen 1. I’d feel much more comfortable buying it hearing this. It doesn’t imply it’s dead. Just that they’re not updating annually.

Core products and services like the Mac with its languishing software and plummeting UI and usability

No kidding
I've been using Win11 for a couple weeks as I'm in the middle of moving on from my Hackintosh

It's come a long ways and relative to macOS I find few downsides anymore... really just "differences" and a LOT more hardware flexibility (as always)

This is the key ^^
Especially for those who keep comparing AVP to the iPhone

When new iPhones are launched to the public, the next version has literally already been developed.
They roadmap and execute on a mulit-year time scale

If we are hearing "no new AVP for awhile" -- it's quite telling

I think they just shipped this thing ...to ship it.
Sometimes you just need to stop pouring time and money into something and "ship it" and get it over with

They’re potentially looking at a 2-3 year cycle for Pro devices. That they have a longer cycle than iPhones doesn’t mean they haven’t started actively planning the Pro 2, nor does it mean they’re not planning an Air prior to 2027.

Leaping to “they have no plan because a new one isn‘t coming out later this year” is, well, quite a leap.

I fully expect one day that Airpods will be capable of running by themselves without needing a device.

I wish we had a version right now that basically has an "iPod Shuffle" inside them.

I think we would have it for sure if Apple hadn't pivoted so hard to "services revenue"

Now, go ahead and pilfer our ideas while we sit back and cool our heels for the next three years.”

This makes sense to you?

There are Chinese companies making wireless buds with charging cases that have little screens for playback and slots for both SD cards and SIMs. So the case becomes a DAP and a phone.

But yeah. There are no new ideas in tech, so…

The sure is a lot of “AVP has failed” wishcasting going on in this thread.

“Vision Pro not getting major updates until 2027” does not mean “Apple doesn’t give AVP a Spec bump”, “Apple never cutting AVP price” or “Apple releases cheaper, non-pro Vision”.

Put a M3 and increase the battery life, reduce the price by $500, and release this time next year or in 18 months and it’s on the iPad Pro upgrade frequency.

But I guess saying “APPLE VISION FAILED because Kuo is always right” is more fun.

Honestly, if the Apple Vision remained the same but the software got improved, that would make it go mainstream.

I mean, all apps, including all pro apps like Final Cut Pro and alike, need to be able to run natively, and need to have amazing new gestures to be able to work insanely fast and smoothly. This last bit, not only for pro apps. I mean, just use the damn cameras to recognize dozens of new gestures for all kinds of interactions!

And that's it!
That - in combination with the already-existing eye tracking - would be the killer function.

Why would anyone expect a major upgrade before that time? It took 15 years to release 1.0. Release 2.0 will with weigh half as much, benefit from Micro-OLED, CPUs will be run on 1nm process manufacturing, draw half as much power requirements and come in two or three model tiers [most likely two tiers like the Apple Watch], not to mention the countless material changes, and won't remotely resemble what it looks like today.

More importantly the display will be translucent so the bulging simulated eyes won't even exist by then.

Sounds unlikely that they're not working on a new model with improved specs, after using it, you can immediately tell which aspects could use improvement, I don't see Apple's research team resting on their laurels. It's also very intentionally called Apple Vision PRO, implying an Apple Vision is in the pipeline.

I'm very bullish on Vision Pro too... but what translucent display on the horizon are you forecasting in a 3-5 year timeframe where anyone can dial their displays up to fully opaque and down to translucent that somehow preserves the insane image quality... AND hits a price point? I've seen privacy smarglass going back at least 15 years in offices used for meeting rooms and executive offices, etc... but that's never been a display for eyeballs, just a film that goes white when energized.

The problem is simple. High price + Extremely low share-ability.

If the problem were that simple, you would be CEO of Apple. This is not a useful way of arguing a point unless you have experience with such problems in software/SaaS.

I do... I've led projects that generated millions of dollars in cost savings or generated millions in revenue. The problem has many moving pieces, but attracting developers to VR/AR/MR is hard because this is not a new space. It's been around for at least ten years, and its share of the devices market is very, very small.

Most of the use cases you can think of can and are being done on iPhone, a device that has a user base around 1.5 BILLION... Developing for VR isn't attractive enough to most software companies to divert or commit new resources.

Anecdotally....

I'm in data analytics. I don't deal in anecdotes and speculation. I'm saying Apple has to hit 22% YoY growth or it's likely this project will be killed or stalled. I'm not going to debate hypotheticals or anecdotes.

At the end of the day every project is a numbers game... either the numbers work and you get to keep your project, or they don't and your investors park or kill it.

Translation: Vision Pro was an epic fail and will be permanently discontinued.
No more software updates after 2027.

What's the point? You already have a phone or watch with music. To me this is more evidence of tech for tech sake, not innovation.

What was the must-have feature that evolved over time for the iPad, like the case you make for health and fitness for the Apple Watch? I know Apple has tried to position the iPad as a replacement for a computer, but most consumers aren't buying that (but still buy the iPad). So what feature has evolved over time with the iPad? I think for the most point people still use it for content consumption more than creation, just how it was positioned at launch.

I am sincerely curious, but obviously I have a point to make too. I disagree that a killer app has to be found for the AVP before it can be judged worth buying for some people. At $3500 it was never going to be for everyone.

Yeah - I struggled with that too, but I think the killer app for iPad IS content consumption. I use mine for reading, taking notes, light games and media when traveling. The pencil was KILLER for me because I use GoodNotes and Notability for note taking, document review, signature and markup at work and nothing else comes close. Those things are uniquely iPad for me - although I can't really say that's the case for everyone.

Cost isn't the issue. I could get an AVP today (even write it off for business) but I don't know what I would do with it other than consume content. As cool as that might be, I don't see myself really wanting to do that beyond novelty. Same with productivity - it might be cool to use an AVP virtual display to do work, but I don't see how that's better than my really world dual monitor setup. My guess is that after the novelty wears off, it will just sit there and at that cost, I'd rather get something else.

I hope that AVP does find something for the masses to take interest, because that will drive investment and improvement. My wife didn't want an iPad when it came out, nor an Apple Watch, nor even an iPhone! Fast forward to today and she's attached to her phone, uses the Watch for all manner of fitness tracking, and can't fall asleep without her iPad. What I want is something that will make even someone like her NEED an AVP - whatever that might be!

This is a false premise. They would never release version 1 of a $3500 device in February and then release another version in October/November of the same year.
Someone doesn't remember Mac IIvx/Centris 650 saga. Here's a brief history lesson.

In 1992, Apple introduced the Mac IIvx for the low, low price of $3000. It sported a 32KHz 68030 (16-bit bus), 4 MB RAM, 80 MB HD and a CD drive. What a great deal. That is until 4 months later Apple released the Centris 650, which looks exactly like the IIvx but with moar RAM, larger HD and a faster 68040 chip. The real kick in the teeth was it sold for $250 less. You've been IIvx-ed.

No kidding

It's come a long ways and relative to macOS I find few downsides anymore... really just "differences" and a LOT more hardware flexibility (as always)

I will add this: I picked up my first PC in about 20 years to preserve "full bootcamp" in a Silicon Mac world now (I do not consider ARM Windows enough to confidently go that way). I too find Windows 11 quite great and it is altering my whole view of Mac vs. PC... such that as my MB is nearing its end, I'm seriously considering buying a Windows laptop instead of a MB... something that would have not even been a thought 5 years ago.

Besides Windows 11 being "good enough", a major driver is that all of the guts are competitively pressured. For example, that desktop PC I purchased is basically a gaming PC to which I added 2 sticks of fast m.2 for 10TB of fast storage and 32GB of RAM. I got ALL of that for under the price of what Apple charges ONLY for an upgrade to 8TB SSD (not to buy the Mac too, only that one upgrade part).

I used to rationalize the Apple Premium as "worth it" but that is not as clear as in the past. But I'm sure the shareholders are enjoying those ever-fattening margins and "...another quarter of record revenue & profit." 💰💰💰

This will NEVER go mainstream at 3500+
