It’s funny to read people here complaining that there was no reason to this year. There isn’t really any reason to yearly to begin with.

Agreed. It was interesting to have Apple straight up say that using your phone longer is good for the planet during the keynote. Sure, it was touchy-feely marketing aimed at tickling my insides so I’d turn a blind eye to the absurdly wasteful concept of releasing new phones every year, but it was marginally refreshing - like a colonic.

How is releasing new phones yearly wasteful? It seems to me the opposite. More and more people use iPhone as their primary computing device and postpone updates of much bigger and more energy intensive (in manufacturing and use) machines.

It proves that a four inch screen isn’t the sweet spot as someone claimed ;)

It proves nothing. You need to realize that not everyone has the same size hands and pockets. The 4" screen is perfect for me, and if they adopt the Xr design for the SE, it will be a larger screen without a larger device. It's the overall device size of the SE that's perfect in my eyes.

$100 if you use Apple math. Price could have stayed the same. IPhone 8 Plus was $50 more at launch with dual camera.

Tim Cook uses Apple Math.

iPhone 8/Plus use the old components, and LCD screens.

The XS is a good value jump from the XR because OLED screens are still not cheap, still fulfilled through Samsung for maximum leverage against Apple. Plus you can see how much it costs to replace them too.

I really think we'll see such a device next year. It makes too much sense.

This doesn't seem that off base. The Xs is still listed as Day 1 pickup/ordering.

The XsMax offers the highest you can get in the biggest size yet and the buyers for the XsMax are most likely those that use it for work, Prosumers or those with money.

The Xr offers pretty much everything else still in a bigger size then the Xs (though less pixel density). Other then 3D touch (which many didn't even know they had), 2nd camera for zooming and the stainless steel, the Xs just doesn't offer anything really to go up to for MOST buyers.

So you have this problem where the higher priced Xs seems 'less' because it's smaller then the Xr. It's a design/optic problem that many have brought up. "So I'm paying more but this phone is bigger"...most peoply buying smartphones (like TV's) have no clue about the screen PPI or density...all they see is size...and a bigger phone/screen that has basically everything the more expensive one has and it's $250 means a lot to many buyers.

I went to the Apple store/Best Buy yesterday to put up an X next to an 8 Plus and 8...and you can barely tell the difference in pixel quality when you're the home screen in terms of quality at all unless you really really look. As for the black/white levels you can see it but no average person is going to notice that.

The Xr should NEVER have been bigger then the Xs.

The 3GS was a lot faster in the days when everything was slow. I know because I went from a 3g to a 3GS, also add in things like video recording and the first upgrade to the camera back when the camera was garbage.

4s added dual core, Siri.

5s added Touch ID

6s 3D Touch

XS?????
Smart HDR.
Stereo (Surround) Sound in Video Recording.
Best Video Recording ever in a smartphone.
Wider Stereo Sounding Speakers.
Faster Face ID.
Two Size Options.
IP 68 Water, Dust, Wine, Juice, Beer Resistant
Portrait Depth Control.
Cinematic Video Stabilization.
Improved Battery Life.
Fastest Chip ever in a smartphone that's going to be a huge deal for AR and Games which the average costumer actually uses everyday.

So is more display, even at the same PPI.
Yeah the massive display is great.

It was mentioned during the keynote. Tin mining and whatnot. You know, the general degradation of the planet, pillaging of finite resources and the exploitation of cheap labour. But hey, it’s fun and exciting to have new phones each year!!

*I’m as guilty as the rest. Make no mistake. Considering going from an iPhone 6 to a XR. The 6 has a new battery and does most everything I need it too, but man, those XRs look great. I’ll let me consumerism win out over conservationism this time (and most other times as well).

That’s capitalism. Price is determined by demand, not by cost.
If people are willing to pay for it the price increases which is exactly my point and you confirmed it by saying there is demand and people are willing to pay the higher prices.

Maybe Apple could lower the price of the XS. Hopefully consumers are fed up with the high price point of the iPhone.

You make no sense. If they didn’t release a new phone this year they’d still be mining tin. It’s just that the tin would be for last years model phone.

The question is why is releasing new phones each year wasteful, not why buying a new phone each year is wasteful.

This shouldn't be that surprising. Many of the improvements in the XS are under-the-hood or aren't likely to be obvious in everyday use. Not that they're unwelcome, they're just not that compelling, especially if you already have an iPhone X, as I do. On the other hand, I'd expect the XS Max to do well because it offers a larger display along with the other tech.

The XR is nicely positioned in between the two in terms of features, offers more colors, and is less expensive. I think it'll sell well.

I also think that the AW Series 4 will be successful. There are a lot of people with earlier versions (I have a Series 0) who have been waiting to upgrade, and the larger displays are a good reason to do that now.

Yes, I am agreeing with the idea that if people pay the price then the price isn’t too high. I am disagreeing with the idea that this is some sort of Apple-only method of pricing.

Why can’t both be true?

I feel like I’m in crazy town. I didn’t say both can’t be true. Someone said that RELEASING new phones each year is wasteful, even if people don’t upgrade each year.

I said I don’t think that’s true.

In response, I’m told “it is wasteful because of tin mining.”

I point out that makes no sense.

And now I’m in a ludicrous conversation where people are arguing points that have nothing to do with my premise.

The price points have gotten absurd, imo. I think companies like Apple will continue to drive up the cost of ownership until people speak with their wallets. I, for one, cannot justify the asking price of these devices anymore.

I’ve always carried both Android and iPhones top dogs, but with existing ones performing well above my ask...there’s nearly no compelling reason for me to support the likes of new Galaxy (esp the Note 9) and iPhone’s bottomless greed.

As always, just my opinion.
But the note 9 costs the same as the XS Max.

Legitimately don’t understand the confusion. An industry that builds fervour and perpetuates excessive consumerism is wasteful in that it annually releases new phones and encourages their purchase (resulting in all that stuff about the effects on resources and labour). Consumers who go for yearly updates might be wasteful in that they signal to the corporation that yearly updates are desired (resulting in all that stuff about the effects on resources and labour). So, that’s where we get the ‘both being true’ element.

Nothing has changed from X visually .... whats the point in upgrading to XS ?

Price is also a huge factor.

It's not an Apple only method but it's common used by them and we are talking about Apple and their new iPhones here.

Yes but unfortunately its way too big. I own an iPhone 7 and dont like those huge phones like the Xr. What should I do? And the Xs is too expensive, I wont buy that for 1150€.

Its a massive problem at the moment, no smart phone manufacturer is interested in making compact phones anymore. Im sure there must be a market for it?
If there was an SE sized device I would happy pay $700 for it.
My lock button just stopped working on my device, hopefully a reseller still has some SEs in stock...

Since Apple never releases pre-sale metrics any concept about lackluster or better than is vaporware.

Your problem is no matter how much you want to pay for this form factor, it's a loss leader for them.
