I wish Apple would allow me to connect an Apple Watch to an iPad.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a standalone Watch this fall, that doesn't need another iOS device to connect through / coordinate with. But that may not help you for passing down a previous series model (if it requires the latest - and understandably you're unlikely to give her the new one and keep the old for yourself).

I have been putting off purchasing my first Apple Watch waiting for first-party sleep tracking. Now that Jawbone’s servers have been offline for a year it’s really time.

Beyond a ceramic case, what else would there be to merit a Series 5 release? More storage? A processor bump? The Series 4 seems to already hit the sweet spot.
The only way it could get sweeter at this point would be a redesign (like the patent Apple filed that showed a “roundish” design that looked integrated(?) into the bands), hopefully next year.

I could be wrong, but wasn’t ECG a surprise feature that came out of nowhere with Series 4? I can see a new health feature being announced, maybe blood pressure or glucose monitoring.

Maybe looked for ECG instead of EKG , but yes it was ( December before )

https://www.macrumors.com/2017/12/21/future-apple-watch-ekg-heart-monitor/

Glucose showed up before but perhaps the approach skipped so far . ( I think third parties stepped in there a bit )

Sleep Tracking

https://www.macrumors.com/2019/02/26/apple-testing-sleep-tracking-feature-apple-watch/
( ‘by 2020’ could mean ship in 2019 and finally deploy fully realized feature ( hw+sw) in 2020 )

Pragmatically, sleep tracking would mean less need for battery recharge time . Don’t think this is as much of a sensor add as much as do it and not impact battery lifetime in the rest of the day problem .

2 questions:

1: Any thoughts on if Apple might offer SS in the GPS model only once again? I’m used to a heavy watch and prefer the weight but have 0 need for LTE.

2: Also, I’ve been an AW Ignorer since it’s introduction. However, I am now completely confident in it’s ECG and am considering a refurb 44mm GPS to test the waters as I will benefit from the AFib monitoring. I was ready to pull the trigger next week, however talk of improving the cardio monitoring is causing me pause. If it’s software then I’m not concerned. Would you wait for the September Event to rule out actual Sensor Hardware improvements?

I would like the black sport band with the perforations on the Nike Edition. Am I correct that if I purchase the Nike Edition with the perforated sport band and choose to not use the Nike faces it’s exactly the same as the non Nike?

I realize there is a Nike + on the back. I would like to avoid having to purchase a separate band. I don’t like the feel of the nylon sport band.

Thanks. :apple:

The series 0 is good for telling the time and getting notifications, but try to use an actual app and it takes 15+ seconds. The newer watches (eg series 4) takes 1-2 seconds to load. That's a pretty massive difference.

Also Series 0 doesn't integrate with iOS 12 and up. I made it a point to unload my wife's AW S0 before the iPhone XS & XR models came out.

Going by Apple release schedule for the watch so far I wouldn’t believe this for a second.
Koh throwing **** at the wall to see what sticks...

Which release schedule would this be

https://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#Other

April , September , September , September.

Fall and September kind of go together .

If Apple is mainly doing an internals bump, then there may not be much from the supply chain to leak . Same battery , screen , case , etc wouldn’t make ‘ rumor waves ‘ in supply chain . If just added better ( lower power consumption) radio and/or a power optimization process shrink on CPU then it would present low rumor profile , but substantial enough for a version bump . Battery life was always a major issue . It has been ‘ good enough ‘ but better would just solidify their lead .

( maybe ceramic case but could hold that back at release time for later roll out )

Different year, same, SAME exact comments...

Series 3 owners - I cant wait to upgrade!

Series 4 owners - WHAT ON EARTH COULD BE BETTER?

… and the world keeps turning. Hey, can anyone guess what the comments will be like when the Series 6 is rumored next year?

----

On topic, I sure hope it has a better microphone, Siri can't hear me, like almost ever on my S4.

Actually, I’m a series 3 owner and I’m content with it. Now that I know the S5 will be a minimal upgrade it’s a hard pass for me.

A fingerprint sensor please!! yes right on the side button. ffs i'm tired of typing pin codes on screen to unlock

All the rumors about the under-screen fingerprint scanner that's supposedly going to go into Chinese iPhones instead of FaceID is, I think, going to go into the Apple Watch. I'm surprised nobody's been talking about this. It just makes so much sense. Tap the screen to unlock it, simple.

I have a series 3. This is an easy upgrade for me. The series 4 is a solid upgrade and even a minor improvement in series 5 still makes a sizeable upgrade.
And my series 3 is losing battery pretty fast these days. It used to be outstanding but things have changed.
My wife has a series 2 and her battery life won't even get through one day anymore.

I am still on the original (Series 0?) AW and have never seen a reason to upgrade, but now I think its about time so I can get the newer software. I would like a FT camera & more health related stuff. See what comes and what it will cost.
I'm also still using series 0... works great and still lasts all day. My wife's doesn't last all day since she has the 38mm. We'll probably upgrade finally this year because of software too.

Setting up a cellular plan is optional.
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207578

You can skip during set up. Yes, Apple is making a few folks pay for radio not using sing but they have one less SKU to make too. At best it would be a $100 drop from $699 . That gap from Aluminum Cellar to Steel is probably something they would give up easily on .

If there is a 5 and the 3 rotates out then that SS 4 will sink that low at least in street prices .

Better cardio monitoring doesn’t necessarily mean different sensors . Just better processing of data getting can be an improvement .

The best thing to come of the series 5 is the price cut on the series 4. Maybe then I’ll give the watch a try.

I had not been particularly interested in the Apple watch until recently. Will wait for the specifics on the AW 5, but will likely go with the 4. How much of a price reduction on the 4 series can be expected after the 5 is announced?

My most desired feature would be an always on display, even if only the time alone (to save battery), and then when you tilt the screen to your face, you'd get the full watch face.

I keep wishing with the OLED iPhones we could get this feature to, but most people on here think its stupid lol. When I had a Note 7 years ago, I LOVED the AOD feature.

That is one of the main rumors of the S5.

Apple does not update the Watch yearly.

I'm using my Series 0 with my iPhone 8 running iOS 12, and I don't see a problem. The Series 0 can't go beyond watchOS 4, but that doesn't affect the iOS connection.

You know this? Friends with someone with inside knowledge? The rest of us are just going on rumors.

I honestly see no reason to upgrade my Apple Watch annually. I have the Series 4 Currently. But I had the First Gen, then then Series 2, and now the 4. so I will wait till at least the S6 next year.

Every two years, or, in other words, about as long as a single battery charge for a Casio G-Shock with Bluetooth and actual moving hands haha.
