Kuo: iMac Pro Won't Launch Until 2023, 27-inch External Display Without Mini-LED Coming This Year

I still believe we'll see something at WWDC. They can sorta get away with the MacPro being late, especially since they appear to actually have the MacProMini (aka Mac Studio ... stupid name) I predictred a few weeks back, but there is a metric ton of people out there waiting for almost two years now to replace their more-dated-by-the-minute iMac, especially since the 24" M1 iMac dropped. I simply cannot fathom them neglecting their arguably most important Mac prodcut this long.

MCK's tweet now implies that Apple will offer two iMac models - an Apple Silicon version of the Intel iMac 5K with M1 Pro and M1 max and then a separate and unique iMac Pro.
Makes very good sense to make a 27 inch M1 Pro/Max. That will be 1:1 replacement for current and very popular 27 inch iMac. Complete reuse of the MBP innards into a new package.

However, a stand alone rumoured "Mac studio" + apple screen and a "iMac Pro" with the same internals as the stand alone device seem to be very overlapping products.

It is possible that Apple can afford to keep more products as they can essentially reuse of the motherboards and chips.

27“ was very cool 10 years ago, Apple. I‘m really glad that I switched to a dual 31.5“ LG setup (32UN880-B). Not only does this setup give me an enourmous screen size, it also gives me the freedom to connect whatever I want (Hdmi, Displayport, younameit).

Why keep the iMac Pro? It was a horribly expensive stopgap because Apple didn't have a better alternative in-between the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro. They seem to be working on that category now.

In the more immediate future, Kuo says that Apple plans to release an affordable display for consumers this year. Kuo says the display will measure 27-inches in size and not feature mini-LED.
I hope this isn't true, I really want a 27" 5K display with MiniLED and the same HDR capabilities as my 16" MBP :(

The Pro Display XDR is beautiful but 32" is just a tad too large.

If this is true I'm going to FKN SCREAM. My 2015 iMac died at xmas and I've had to get a 2nd hand Mac mini as a cheap temporary replacement because there's no way I'm buying a brand new iMac right now, but this thing is soooooo slow and painful to use (even with a 1TB M.2 SSD) I can't stand it. I'm still hoping for the iMac Pro to drop tomorrow.

If this rumour were true I'd even begin to question the existence of a new 27" iMac Pro in the first place. I'd predict Apple will launch a non-Pro iMac 27" this year. People like the larger iMac but don't need a 'Pro' model.

Or...

New Mac Mini Studio this year, new iMac Studio 27" next year??..

Yeah thats what I was thinking. Not so sure if this is reliable though. A lineup with M2, a new mac mini and a new laptop, and an iphone se makes a lot of sense for this event, if you then have an event later in the year with new iMac Pro and Mac Pro. Its a solid plan for 2022 as a whole.

If you dont have the new Pro macs to announce at the end of the year, how do you shuffle your announcements? Suddenly a March event makes a lot less sense.

I don't believe what Koh is predicting, he's hardly ever right a year or more out. And he got the Apple Watch Series 7 design and the iPad Mini 6 launch date totally wrong.

Why would Apple hold off on giving the Mac Pro a spec bump to keep up with the competition when the new chips are there? They won't.
And I really cannot see Apple selling a totally new design 24" iMac with Apple silicon, possibly even updated to new Apple silicon, for nearly 3 years before they sell a larger Apple silicon iMac with new design.

Apple will not launch an iMac Pro or a Mac Pro until 2023, while it still plans to release a 27-inch external display without mini-LED sometime this year, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today on Twitter.

Outlining his predictions for Apple's Mac lineup in 2022 and 2023, Kuo said that Apple plans to release a new high-end Mac mini and a 27-inch external display without mini-LED in 2022, while an Apple silicon Mac Pro and iMac Pro will not launch until 2023.

Kuo's prediction that Apple does not plan to release an iMac Pro until next year is at odds with information shared by display analyst Ross Young. Young, who also boasts a credible track record regarding Apple products, has said an iMac Pro could launch as soon as June this year.

The iMac Pro is expected to replace the 27-inch Intel-based iMac currently in the lineup and be sold alongside the 24-inch desktop computer announced in April 2021. Young has said the iMac Pro will feature mini-LED and previous rumors suggest a similar design to the 24-inch size.

Given the large discrepancy between the information shared by both Kuo and Young, it could be plausible that the analysts are referencing different devices.

Kuo could be referencing a true professional-grade iMac at the highest-end of the lineup, while details put forth by Young are simply referencing a non-pro iMac.

It's worth noting that Apple had previously used the "iMac Pro" name in a now-discontinued iMac, and despite one rumor suggesting the company will resurrect the name, it's debatable whether Apple will use the name again.

In the more immediate future, Kuo says that Apple plans to release an affordable display for consumers this year. Kuo says the display will measure 27-inches in size and not feature mini-LED. Just today, Mark Gurman noted that it's likely the display could be announced during the Apple event on Tuesday.

Kuo also confirmed today that Apple will launch a new high-end Mac mini this year and it's also expected to debut during next week's event. See our guide for a full rundown of everything we expect from Apple next week.

Not launching an iMac Pro ASAP would be a massive failure. A lot of us here are wondering why we’ve even had to wait this long…

Hard to determine whether Ross Young or Kuo will be right. Young has the perfect track record, but that could be because he tracks only displays, so he's talking to fewer people who make the mini-LED displays for Apple. Kuo is also a supply chain analyst but he's talking to everyone who makes stuff for Apple. Kuo has more sources, but a weaker track record, probably because he has to juggle a lot more sources and has to figure out who's more reliable. Because of that track record and also Apple's promise to complete the transition in 2 years (no Mac Pro till 2023?), I'm going to have to go with Young with fingers crossed.

If Apple only releases a plain LCD iMac, I'm going to wait. I really like those mini-LED screens on the iPad Pro and MacBook Pro. Since my eyes are older and worse than the average person's, I actually see OLED and mini-LED the same (yes, I somehow see blooming on OLED, but I"m sure it's my eyes due to past eye surgeries). Those deep blacks are addicting.
Sometimes what looks like blooming actually isn't, especially when it comes to blooming around letters. It's not light bleeding from the backlight but a design decision to add a halo effect to the font. Blooming on OLED displays is impossible by the way.

Seems really strange to not have a larger iMac available this year unless the iMac Pro really is a significantly different machine than being just a larger 24" iMac with the Pro & Max SOCs in it.

A standalone 27" Apple display would make sense if the new Mac Mini is finally launching though.

The Pro Display XDR is beautiful but 32" is just a tad too large.

I've had an XDR for about a yer and a half now and feel that it is the right size. My secondary monitor is a 27" Thunderbolt and feels small.

Size can be a matter of perception. I grew up in the ‘60s and ‘70s when cars looked a certain way and we were used to it. Now a lot of them look to have odd proportions and too small wheels because we have become used to new standards.

I have a 21.5in. iMac. In the store a new 24in. iMac looks kinda small, but I know at home that 24in. display would look big on my desk even though the chassis is only a bit bigger overall than my 21.5.

Anyone in a similar situation as myself would find a 27in. display quite a step up.

Why keep the iMac Pro? It was a horribly expensive stopgap because Apple didn't have a better alternative in-between the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro. They seem to be working on that category now.
It sounds like the iMac Pro name may cover all larger iMacs from the base to the maxed out models. Forget about the old Xeon iMac Pro.

If Apple doesn't release a 27 inch iMac this year, I will after 44 years move on to another brand....

Dreams are shattered, hearts are broken…….Apple getting slower in bringing new and improved products to market

Just a “regular” 27” M-series iMac would do me, with black bezels of course. Or at least the a 24” with black bezels. No two tone colour nonsense.
