I've never used the airpods that came with a phone, but they should include the lightning adapter.

I recall in the UK a bunch of networks started selling phones without chargers, because "you already have one". I don't recall there being a discount.

I do think leaving out the AC adapter could be a good idea with shops offering one on request - that would cut down a lot of e-waste.

A voucher or an option on the website to not include the charger might not be a bad idea.

Next step, no charger or cable included in the box.

You joke but this is a very real possibility if iPhones ever do go fully portless:D

Here’s an environmental report about the iPhone 6s where it mentions the packing volume since the original iPhone has been reduced 34% https://www.apple.com/euro/environment/pdf/a/generic/products/iphone/iPhone6s_PER_sept2015.pdf

If the box just had to contain the phone and nothing else it would dramatically reduce the size of the box, and probably halve the amount of planes/transport for iPhones in the future. I imagine that would save a decent amount, not just in carbon emissions but also cost.

Better reduce the price of iPhones to go along with the change then, especially here in the UK where they are priced very high.

I already have 3 pairs so I don’t need anymore. However if you’re paying over £1,000 for a phone it would be nice to have some form of headphones in the box.

I only use my EarPods in bed at night and during the day I use my AirPods Pro but it’s the principle.

I mean, I’ll be honest, out of all the iPhones I’ve bought, the 3GS being my first one, I have NEVER touched the included earphones. Never even taken the plastic off the box.

I don’t know how to feel about this, if it leads to lower prices then sure. We can buy accessories separately for the reduction in cost of the phone if we need them. But we all know that won’t be the case.
Nintendo did it with the New 3DS XL. Shrug.

Hm I don't know how I feel about this, I can see the reasoning for reducing e-waste but on the other hand I don't have any working lightning EarPods at the moment. I use headphones only when I am working so don't want to spend a fortune and since I broke my last EarPods I am currently have to use an adapter. If they made it so AirPods were £50 or something when you buy an iPhone I'd be OK with it or if they make it an ask and we will post you some free (or just P&P) that would seem reasonable (or dropped the iPhone price).

Aren't mobile phones manufactures obliged to provide head phones with every device sold, according to the safe driving laws and regulations? I think in Europe that's the case.
How would headphones make you drive safely? Quite the opposite. You should have nothing on your ears or in your ears, so you can hear the traffic around you. Connect the phone to your radio and play through the radio. How do you control the phone? You don't. Turn the music on before you start. Leave it playing until you stop. Put your hands on the steering wheel and keep them there.

Apple's upcoming "iPhone 12" may not come with EarPods included in the box, as a means of driving demand for the company's popular wireless AirPods which are sold separately, according to reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Seems a bit premature to me.

(If only Apple would update the Beats X to use the H1, though, I may have sprung for them. Don't really like the color, but the form factor seems good to me.)

My EarPods also get considerably poorer sound over time, so I would miss getting "new" ones as part of a new iPhone about every other year.

_You_ don't have any working EarPods at the moment. Other people have three sets hidden in a drawer somewhere. What happens more often? Those with three sets in a drawer would pay for a 4th set. I'd look on eBay.

Apple should sell them for say £29.99 and add a voucher that lets you buy either EarPods with £27.99 off or AirPods with £50 off. So almost free for people like you, but nobody will pay even £2 to add a 4th one to their collection.

In Europe, at least Spain, but I imagine most other countries as well, it's forbidden to drive or cycle wearing headphones (even the small one ear bluetooth handsfree devices)

Makes sense.Does anybody still use them? Haven't used mine in years.I have a box full of them unused and not even unwound from the cardboard pack they come in.

Do people spending $1000 on a phone not already have a pair of headphones?
It's not always that, when you buy a phone you expect to have earphones in the box. A fresh pair is always nice.
In saying that my ones from my 7 are still in good cond so I use those the rare instances I don't/can't use my AirPods

I left my AirPods for servicing a day before the lockdown was enforced so I was given no option but to use the EarPods. This reminded me of how happy we should be we have the AirPods, as the wired ones are such a pain. Apart from having the cable hanging, there is some issue with the lightening connector, so the music will stop from time to time, without me doing anything. What is more, years ago, before I got my AirPods, I could never use the EarPods for a long period of time, the cable is of a such low quality that you just can’t keep them for long. Having said that, I believe it is the right decision for Apple to ditch the wired ones. I wish they could include the AirPods with the Pro iPhone, even if this would mean slightly price increase, but most people will be against that anyways.
