Why are so many people conflating this with the USB-C / USB-A / Lightning plug?

You can still use any old Lightning-to-USB-A cable with an upcoming iPhone, and every man and his dog own a handful of these. And if not: every supermarket these days has them at the checkout for 7 bucks or so.

There really are more important issues than a missing charger in a box, that hardly anyone will ever use.
So you're assuming that every man and his dog are existing iPhone users, and even recommending people to just get questionable 3rd party cables.

Alright, agree to disagree.

Why, do you need an iPhone charger to charge an iPhone?

I think you're talking about someone else. Kuo's name is often the first attached to leaks and rumors that end up being true. He's a pretty reliable source.

No I haven’t, in fact ironically macrumors did a round up of rumours and who got it right in the past month - and completely unsurprisingly, Kuo didn’t do well.

He has mislead me enough times that I won’t forget his name. I’m sure the only things he got right are close to actual release/launch by which point many supply chain rumours already confirmed things enough we didn’t need his input.

I remember once he did a complete u-turn on his iPhone predictions a few days before the iPhone event. How very useless.

That's assuming that the buyer is an existing iPhone owner, who is keeping the old cable. Apple seem to pride itself for having first time iPhone users buying their iPhones.
Even in this forum, I'm seeing people selling or giving their old iPhone away, highly likely with the old cable.

Anyway, this is getting a bit winded. We can agree to disagree. If this rumor is true, I don't like it, and it will only create more waste as Apple themselves have to package and ship their USB-C chargers separately instead of inside the iPhone box. I don't think this is a good move. Hopefully it's an incorrect rumor.

Funny, I've never been asked for a cable when selling or trading in my phones... it's almost as if they're ubiquitous or something. It is also highly likely that you can pick one up for $4.99 at the nearest gas station.

Anyway, "winded" is right; over several posts you've incrementally whittled the affected user group down to "first-time iPhone buyers without any USB-C ports, and without any Qi chargers, that refuse to buy any accessories."

I'm sure that's still a "large" number, but not percentage-wise. Not at all.

what about countries that do not have 5G yet? are we still gettin no charger to cover the costs of the USA? lololol

I think people are failing to read the article.

YOU WILL GET A CHARGING CABLE WITH THIS

YOU WILL NOT GET A CHARGING WALL PLUG.

Do you also want TVs to include a wall power outlet? What you're missing is that after 13 years of iPhones and years before that for other phones and electronics, USB chargers are so ubiquitous that unless you're buying your very first smart phone, you have a least a few of them laying around the house. My refrigerator doesn't come with a power outlet. Whatever shall I do?
Agree with you in spirit, but a more apt comparison would be that TVs include the plug that goes in the wall. And they do.

As a standalone device, Apple is selling you a device with no way to charge it. Until you cough up more. People that don't follow tech stuff will be very surprised upon opening the box.

It comes with a cable in the box you can use to charge it.

It also charges wirelessly.

People are pretty stupid if they don't understand how to charge a $1,000+ device.

Is it really worth the bad press ?

Take the headphones. Leave the charger.
Taking out the earpods can be acceptable (many mid-range and lower Android phones don't even include earbuds), but that still project "greed" to regular consumers, considering the premium "experience" Apple has positioned their brand as.

If Apple wanted to do this, they should've done so on the iPhone SE 2020. The lower price point will make the decision excusable. It would be weird if a cheaper iPhone has more stuff in the box than the more expensive model.

Should be ok, considering how many charges many people have lying around already. They just need to explicitly mention this to people during the sales process.

I remember when I bought a “New Nintendo 3DS” and it came with no charger, not even a usb cable lol.

While this wouldn’t personally bother me as I have wireless chargers, USB A chargers and USB C chargers all over the place I still think it’s a bad idea.

I have plenty of chargers and sell the charger with the phones i sell after two years. Doesn’t bother me but it would bother new customers that dont have a puck already. I highly doubt apple will do this because of the backlash they’ll get for a few pennys part
