Is this even legal in places like the EU? I guess if it’s optional but free?

I thought devices always had to include a charger to charge it? I understand having the option to remove it though - to save waste.
Nintendo did this a while back. People whined, then they got over it.

This is a money grab by Apple, pure and simple. This is like BMW charging an annual fee for CarPlay, until it backfired and they were forced to offer it for free.

If they cared about the environment they would also skip the cable. Why do you need a cable without the charger?

Unless the phone is discarded, the charger is always needed, whether by the subsequent owner or if the phone breaks and you get a refurbished unit as a replacement from Apple.

Even though I have owned 3 iPhones so far, I have no extra chargers, because I’ve always given the charger to the person that I sold the phone to.

And even if one has multiple devices, chances are they will all need to be charging at the same time, especially at night.

USB ports are ubiquitous. Every phone or computer has them, they are built into walls in some places, they are on planes, etc.

Lightning ports are not. So it’s much easier to find a spare usb Port than a spare lightning cable.

To plug it into an existing USB port?

And keep feeding the monsters greed and caving into the money grab. Brilliant! It’s no wonder the world is spiraling out of control the way it is. Because “WE” roll over and allow it. 🤦‍♂️

Who's forcing you to buy Apple products?

Precisely! I posted the exact same thing.

So everything else going on doesn’t move you, but Apple makes you separately buy a $10 thing you probably don’t need and now you’re calling for armed revolution?

Yeah, money grab=cost cutting. By the way, a cable isn't nearly as big a deal environmentally as these chargers. So either the phone costs $20 more or you pay $20 more for a charger on the side. Get over it.

I'm not buying that. Thats like going to a car dealer, and the dealer said you have to buy the wheels separate.

I think a more accurate analogy would be a car dealer selling you a new car with 4 spare tires installed instead of full size tires.

Charge time is the only thing affected by this rumor.

I was bitter when I didn’t get a charge brick with my Apple Watch, so this bugs me too but it wouldn’t affect my purchasing decision. I’ll probably be keeping my XR for at least another year anyway.

That's assuming that the buyer is an existing iPhone owner, who is keeping the old cable. Apple seem to pride itself for having first time iPhone users buying their iPhones.
Even in this forum, I'm seeing people selling or giving their old iPhone away, highly likely with the old cable.

Anyway, this is getting a bit winded. We can agree to disagree. If this rumor is true, I don't like it, and it will only create more waste as Apple themselves have to package and ship their USB-C chargers separately instead of inside the iPhone box. I don't think this is a good move. Hopefully it's an incorrect rumor.

If they are coming from a high end android, they may already have a high power USB-C charger. If they have a bunch of USB-A chargers in their home, they could simply buy a lightning to USB-A cable instead of replacing all their chargers. Furthermore, if they do choose to throw out all their USB-A chargers, Apple's decision to include or exclude a USB-C charger in the box will not change the number of USB-A chargers they are throwing away.

We can agree to disagree on the merits of including a charger in the box, but the e-waste angle is not really a matter of opinion. A charger in a box creates more e-waste in a very literal sense as every electronic device produced eventually becomes more waste. More production, as a rule, produces more waste.

Do you know anything about me? Do you know what is moving me and what isn’t? Do you know what I may or may not be doing to make a change with “everything else going on”? Stop making presumptions.

iPhone 14 won't include a phone in the box. Apple's thinking is that buyer's probably already have a phone.

Correction. Existing 18W Apple charger costs $30. 3x exaggeration indicates that you are not that confident in your argument.

Do you know how to charge an iPhone? The part that plugs into the "charging part" is USB-A or USB-C, not lightening cable.,

Oh, you didn't READ THE ARTICLE.
