But what if this is someone’s first phone/iPhone? It would suck to pay more for something that would be needed to make the device run.

I have an idea, Apple. Quit trying to take every consumer for all their worth.

Personally, I’m ok with this - my wife and I are long-time iPhone owners, and have accumulated a lot of wall-chargers and cables at this point. We’re still both using our iPhone X’s, but since that phone (and fast-charging), we’ve had a USB-C to Lightning cable that we used with my MBP‘s USB-C PD brick (and also with my 2018 iPad Pro 18W) when needing to fast-charge, but otherwise we both have wireless chargers on our nightstands. So we don’t need more wall-chargers and thus prefer that phone cost stays the same Vs price increasing given higher 5G costs (and Apple can maintain their “margin” and appease shareholders).

I understand why emotionally, this decision would annoy people (human nature - we resist when things we’re used to having are taken away from us). I can also understand the argument that maybe this year is not the right year to do it (given the move to “fast-charging” USB-C PD charger is still in the earlier stages of transition) so not that many people actually have these USB-C wall-units, though USB-A is ubiquitous.

That being said, I do think this was inevitable, and for me (and whom I imagine is a big chunk of the target flagship phone demographic), I’m not upset with this move.

This is completely unacceptable!! Earpods I can understand (even though i'm not a fan of) but the charger? No Apple, what are you thinking? When I buy a TV, do I have to buy the remote seperately? DO NOT GO FORWARD WITH THIS IDIOCY!!!!
I would *happily* allow tv manufacturers to keep their ****** remotes. I have this going on because I never use the factory remotes, which all suck in different ways (the ****ing LG remote moves the cursor around just from you moving the remote in the air. What a ****ing pain in the ass).

I have no problem with this decision by Apple if they do it. Each year Apple sells 100M+ phones and they include wired earphones and also a charging plug. I have so many of these accessories that I never take them out of the box. I understand the fast charger (I have 2 and purchased another from Apple), but this charger is not necessary to charge the iPhone. While it may be annoying I do not think it will impact the vast majority of people.

That's because it comes with everything needed to plug into a standard wall socket.

And the next iPhone will come with everything needed to plug into a standard USB socket, so what's your point?

What. the actual. hell
Unacceptable. iPhone 12 needs USB-C, and it needs a charger in box. Nothing less.
Silly. Yes, I suppose we all have a bunch of chargers, but C'mon....
no wired earphones, fine.

but no brick charger? seriously, where do they think they want the iphones to be plugged? that's nonsense
Nonsense.

This should have been the default long time ago, and not only with chargers, remotes should have been Universal long time ago.
Most people have chargers enough, better lower the price by $ € 5 and BYO.

Most iphone buyers are repeat customers. Most iphone buyers who are not repeat customers already own a device that has a usb charger. So you are talking about ”first time buyers of a device that charges with a usb charger.” Small audience that is.

So, yeah, they may have to pay $5 at walmart or a drug store to pick one up, or pay apple $20 for their fancy one. The rest of us get smaller boxes, with less waste. It probably makes sense in the grand scheme of things, but even if it’s a close call, the histrionics about it on here amuses the hell out of me.

If they don't include the charging brick, people will just go and buy the cheap ones off amazon and other sites. Maybe that is Apple's goal, to drive the 3rd party charger market up...

Makes sense with the pricing that was rumored, which already sounded quite cheap (by Apple standards). Also the cost saving in just shipping with smaller packaging due to this is enormous (don't forget that Apple flies not boat their iPhones out of China). It probably will be a 50% smaller package which basically translates in slashing the shipping cost in half.

They could make the boxes smaller already if they didn't include those stupid plastic inserts.

Who doesn’t have a charger? Seriously, how many people have nothing in their house with a USB port, and yet they are buying an iphone?

My regard for you is high (as I hope you tell), so I will simply note that your understanding of how most people live appears to be limited.

And your question misses the point - but you knew that.

seriously! Can’t wait till they bring the car out, comes with one full charge, but u have to pay extra if you want to charge it up again.

Really?

Really?

I mean, I can see Apple pulling that kind of cheep-ass BS, I doubt Tim has ever seen a penny he didn't want to pinch... But, why on Earth would they want a NEW iPhone user, yes, I'm sure there's still people who could be buying their first Apple phone, using their old non-Apple charger? Seems un-Apple-like?

Odd?

I plug my phone into my iMac so this would not affect me. I still have many output devices that use a 3.5mm jack so I will just keep using my 6s.

You'd be correct if the rumor suggested that Apple would include a Lightning to USB-A cable, but it's apparently going to be USB-C. I'm willing to bet that there are still many people out there with tons of USB-A ports between devices and chargers, but no USB-C ports.

I don’t *think* I missed the point, but maybe I did. What’s the point?

Is this even legal in places like the EU? I guess if it’s optional but free?

I thought devices always had to include a charger to charge it? I understand having the option to remove it though - to save waste.

In fact it is the opposite. The EU agreement about a common charger was all about reducing the number of chargers to reduce e-waste by re-using chargers across devices.

And sadly yet we still bend over and take it in because we're too intertwined in the eco system. Maybe I should just say screw Apple and switch over to the other platform 😮

Say thank you to the EU - they‘re forcing Apple to ship their mobile phones with universal chargers. As they‘re refusing, leaving away the charger altogether is a perfect way (for them) to prevent the EU from going after them

Yup, I'm pretty sure that is what this is about. It really works well for Apple relative to the EU regulations. I think is is better for all consumers actually.

Man I don't know who would even buy this piece of ****. The thing is all my friends were telling to buy an iPhone. NO ****** CHARGER!!!
