I think it would going bad afterwards. Imagine other manufacturers will adopt this way, since Apple is trendsetter, other usually will follow. More premium price but less goodies, shame.

Actually this practice already had been while in Japan and I’m not too fond this practice. My contracted (KDDI AU) Sony phone doesn’t came with anything, only box, some manuals, unit itself and 1-Seg antenna. Domestic Xperia had slightly different box and more smaller package compared with global overseas version because they came with all necessities such cable, charger, etc.

Thankfully I am already had bunch of powerful type-C charger so it won’t bother me too much.

But if imagine I need to gift someone, I need to shell out extra cash for separate charger. Isn’t wise when recipients questioned “how I charged this phone? especially for cousin and family”. I’d not want says “please buy your own charger” either.

A good move. I have a ton of chargers in the house from over the years, yet only one iPhone. Trade in outlets don’t want the chargers so we end up having to keep them. Such a waste.

It’s stupidity. Samsung includes a fast charger in the box because they aren’t stingy ******s. When you justify getting bent over, it leads to more bending over.

Have you ever purchased an iPhone where the the charger was not included?

I have never used the charger that came with an iPhone. It stays in the box together with the EarPods until I sell it.

Also, why do people like you insist on Apple doing things others do?

So I thought I had a ton of charging blocks - but as I looked around - I have the ones (1 for iPhone, 1 for iPad) that are used to charge overnight. I have a couple I have in my backpack for travel and to places I go to but not regularly. Then I have my only spare which is the one I got with the 11 Pro - never taken it out of box. Do people really have a ton of left over ones. My older ones I probably gave away as I gave kids older iPads etc.
I suspect as "everyone" who has bought a recent Mac Book with only USB-C has bought a dongle for all the other stuff they use - people will end up buying additional bricks for their phones now.
Earphones I do have tons of since I don't use much.
Mistake Apple but..

If not including Earpods and charger (but keeping the charging cable) lowers the starting price of iPhone 12 to $599, it would be totally worth it. Or perhaps if the only charging cables were lightning to USB-A AND lightning to USB-C, it might make sense.

This isn’t going to happen though. Makes no sense to ship without a charger. But let’s get the count up to 500 folks.

I’m thinking that Apple will change over to usb-c for the 13.
It should make sense because the new MacBooks are using it for charging.
This helps Apple stop production of those old charging blocks and now they can focus on the future.

Is there any other electronic in the world that is sold without a ready way right out of the box to charge it? They'd get sued in a minute.

Apple TV. AirPods, and other Bluetooth headsets and speakers. Apple keyboards and mice. Japanese cell phones. Rechargeable power banks. A ton of junk from China.

A benefit nobody's mentioned is that you don't need to produce various kits and boxes for different countries.

Say thank you to the EU - they‘re forcing Apple to ship their mobile phones with universal chargers. As they‘re refusing, leaving away the charger altogether is a perfect way (for them) to prevent the EU from going after them

No, the EU's goal is to have manufacturers stop shipping chargers period. Think about it, what's the environmental benefit of mandating a universal charger if every single device is going to ship with a charger anyway?

A secondary goal is to harmonize the market, specifically for countries that can't use Europlug (those that use the British plug).

The EU saw the Japanese do it successfully, where their phones traditionally shipped without a charger (but annoyingly, they used carrier-specific ports).

People have too many USB-A chargers, that I can agree on. But how many people actually have USB-C charger? Even Apple only just include it on the iPhone 11 Pro models. So majority of buyers won't have the right charger if Apple put lightning to USB-C cable in the box.

In the end, it's net positive (more e-waste). It's not really saving Apple any cost as well as they still have to make and ship those USB-C chargers separately.

They could use their old USB-A charger with their old USB-A-to-lightning cable to charge a new iPhone providing it has a lightning port.

If this is true I’m done with Apple.

If anyone tries to rationalize this you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Well, my charger, cable and EarPods are still in my iPhone 11 pro max box. I’m not ashamed to say this doesn’t bother me. In fact the same is true of my iPad Pro 11in (2018 model) and my 2019 and 2020 MacBook pros. I have tons of usbc to lightning cables and chargers...

This is why i gave up using apple products. Doesnt matter though, they know that the average apple sheep will buy their products no matter what.

People buy apple products and it has nothing to do with being An Apple sheep. It’s about how good the products are.

I’m sure you will change your tune when android does the same in the year or so. I bet a large amount rarely use their cable these days. Wireless charging is the standard these days.

“Some people have different priorities than me. I will now call them by a derisive term so everyone sees how much more evolved I am than those people.”

”I don’t use Apple products, but I like hanging around in a forum dedicated to apple products.” ?

Wouldn’t it be more productive to hang around in forums that discuss things you actually enjoy, instead of coming here and trying to make fun of people who like different things than you?

So no headphones or charger in the box but I’ll bet the price is exactly the same.

I don’t expect a price decrease because these accessories will definitely cost way less to make than what people expect Apple to decrease the price by.

Not to mention that removing these accessories would make the box slimmer, possibly allowing Apple to ship more of them by freight and lower transport costs.

Pricing is a funny thing. If the next iPhone costs more to make, then removing these accessories would go towards offsetting the higher costs and maybe avoid a price increase altogether (though we will probably never know).

It could be. Tomsguide compared charging times for a small iPhone 11 with new 5W charger vs large iPhone 11 with fast charger. They reported this:
Based on our testing, the iPhone 11 Pro got to 55% in 30 minutes, while the iPhone 11 Pro hit 48% after the same amount of time. Sadly, the iPhone 11 got to a sad 16% after 30 minutes. So it's about three times as slow with its standard charger.
Now, try older 5W charger with a large iPhone and the difference in charging time might be 5x. And if you try charging from the wrong USB port on you laptop, it may take a week or two.

The difference will be approx. constant since 18W/5W ≈ 3.6

An iPhone 11 Pro Max has a 15 Wh battery capacity. A 5W charger will at best be using 3 hours to charge such a device, in practise probably close to 4 hours due to slower charging from about 80%.

Since most people sleep 6+h per day it might not be a problem for a lot of people.

If they do this, I will not buy an Apple charger when I will need one. I will purchase and aftermarket charger.

Except they already got you to pay for the Apple charger (the cost is currently bundled in with the phone). Now they just won’t give you what you paid for.

Basically, I've been paying extra for my last few iPhone updates because I never use the Earbuds or the new charger (have a drawer full of them in with the plastic on). I'm happy to have those removed from the box.

If they are reducing the price of the phone then i don’t see a harm in avoiding accessories. People these days already have a lot of chargers. For ex. I have one of the iPad. As long as they are providing a charging cable I don’t see them at fault.
