what means nothing is “to my knowledge” “most people keep their packaging for their iphone to be sold at a later date.”

Talk about pulling a fake statistic out of your butt.

Doesn’t every kangaroo have a usb-c output? I don’t see the problem.

A lot of people keep the packaging for resale value at a later date, so the "environmental" impact is a load of b.s. and completely false.

Which most people do anyway
Wonder how many nay-sayers here will NOT buy a 5G phone this fall because of lack of a $25 charger? I'm guessing 2%, but it may be lower than that. 5G and an improved camera system among other goodies.

Not the point. The point is the richest company on earth getting more and more greedy. Its disgusting and pathetic.
Actually it's not the company that is richer, it's the stock holders including me with my huge 160 shares and probably thousands or millions of other small shareholders.

It takes courage to save the environment.

#courage
[automerge]1593461281[/automerge]

Well, #courage is something that Apple forgot long long time ago.
They are NOT saving the environment when Apple is designing computers with all soldered components.
They are NOT having any courage when they take 6-10 years to update a computer.

Let's use some common sense (I know thats a rarity these days). Apple claims part of the reasoning is environment which as we all know is b.s. So instead of including an AC adapter in the existing packaging, they instead sell an AC adaptor is a whole new separate box and more packaging - all we are doing is shifting packaging from one box to two boxes so how is that "environmentally" responsible? It sounds dodgy and simply an excused to milk Apple customers of more money.
Yea best way would be keep the same spaces inside for the accessories and only add them if requested, but that would probably not be feasible if the boxes are factory sealed since there isn't really any historical data on who wants earbuds and/or a charger.

You can't alter everything in the blink of an eye. But I'm sure Apple had it's reasons as far less Macs are sold than iphones. And, the update cycle has nothing to do with this conversation about potential savings for the environment, just a deflection.

The main thing is that we most likely know about the possibility of no chargers, but the general public may have no idea. So hopefully on the site and in stores, they will make it abundantly clear you get no charging brick. Don't really matter as much about the earbuds. Your phone will still function without them. If they would only give one thing, it should be USBA to Lightning Cable. Hopefully a great number of people have at least somewhere to insert an A cable for charging. Not so sure about C.

iPhone 12 models will not include EarPods or a power adapter in the box, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today in a research note obtained by MacRumors. This lines up with a prediction shared by analysts at Barclays earlier this week.

Barclays-iP12-remove-charger-earpods.jpg

Kuo said that Apple will instead release a new 20W power adapter as an optional accessory for iPhones and end production of its existing 5W and 18W power adapters later this year. The form factor of the new 20W power adapter is said to be similar to the 18W version, with USB-C Power Delivery for fast charging, as seen in the leaked photo below.

Kuo believes that iPhone 12 production costs will significantly increase due to 5G support, but he expects Apple to sell the new models at a comparable price to its iPhone 11 lineup, and removing the EarPods and power adapter from the box is one way to reduce costs. Apple would likely also tout the environmental benefits of such a move.

Barclays still expects Apple to include a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box as the only accessory included with iPhone 12 models.

Kuo also expects that Apple will stop including a 5W power adapter with the second-generation iPhone SE later this year, but he said that a 12W power adapter will continue to be included with current generations of the 10.2-inch iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini.

I have so many of the 5W chargers, I give them away if somebody needs one. Since they only switched to the USB-C last year, I woudn't mind having another with my next phone, but I'd buy an Anker one before I paid for one from Apple.

I'm so "meh" on all this, I really couldn't care less. Provide a power transformer or don't; just make sure you make it clear that the box does or does not have one.

God, the "meh" is so strong here, and I can't believe that we're up to page 35 of replies.

Well, except that I hate wall-warts of all kinds. Why can't we have a dynamically switching common wall-wart installed in the power box (behind the drywall), and from there be able to plug in ANY device with ANY power requirements and have the in-wall wall-wart just figure out the damned problem and supply whatever the device needs?

THAT would make the most difference environment-wise.

And don't tell me there's no problem here. I have wall-warts for computers, tablets, televisions, stereo, electronic drum kit, LED lights, external hard drives, monitors, my watch charger, my phone chargers, my car battery charger, my electric fountain in the backyard, 75% of my kitchen appliances, 60% of my bathroom appliances, and 80% of the junk in my garage. I can't charge a Black & Decker weed wacker without a damned wall wart!

Puhlease, all that crap had to be manufactured, which means we had to pull rare elements out of the earth to do that and we have massive tailings ponds for all the waste...and we STILL can't figure out the problme, so we KEEP manufacturing that junk with every new version of this or that doodad.

We could have fixed our houses, apartments, and workplaces YEARS AGO with electrical boxes and power taps that have some spaces reserved for a "dynamic power/smart switching device", which would come with a specific plug arrangement; you know, to avoid having some genius plug their iphone into their 220V electric dryer socket. Or hell, make every wall socket a smart wall socket, capable of feeding downstream demand accordingly.

The way we're doing it right now is so wasteful. I have a whole room dedicated to wall warts and old power supply bricks. On a global scale, dealing with ecology by omitting a wallwart from 6 or 10 million smartphones is like trying to pee on a forest fire and say you're actually doing something about the problem. Pffft!

After a year every phone manufacturers will copy Apple, just like non-removable battery, headphone jack and floppy drive

Well I got news for you, your Apple stock is about to take a massive hit come September. Getting people to spend $1500+ on a new iPhone in a global pandemic was going to be hard enough and now they have just pissed off a ton of their loyal customers like me who have no issues at all making a Pixel or Galaxy my next phone because of this. They had better do some major PR work or this won't end well for them.

Bookmarked for future claim chowder.

First off, not every iphone is going to cost $1500 (which you would only hit by opting to max out the storage and getting AppleCare).

1) Apple sells a variety of smartphones at varying price points. A more budget conscious customer can choose from the iphone SE2 or even the cheaper iphone 12, or even an older iphone 11 or Xr which are still excellent choices in their own right.

2) Apple also offers a few ways to lower the price of the smartphone, from trade-in offers to monthly instalment plans. This makes it more accessible to more people.

3) Even if fewer people buy iPhones, there are still plenty of ways to earn from them, such as selling them accessories (AirPods, Apple Watch), apps, services and accompanying hardware (eg: ipad, Apple TV, Mac). So Apple doesn’t need people to keep buying iPhones; they just need them to continue using smartphones.

This mentality that Apple is just one iphone flop away from doom seriously needs to die and honestly just shows a gross misunderstanding of what makes Apple, Apple.

So what's your AAPL stock price forecast for Sept 30th? I'm guessing $400. 91 days from now...

Other factors may play a big part in the price, not not a $25 charger.

If apple would sell a car it wouldn’t give you the tires with it. And all the apple sheep’s would love it and try to rationalize it.

Apple really got so greedy it’s beyond belief. If it turns out that this rumor is true... a big f**k you towards Apple.

Then don’t buy it. Everyone acts like Apple is stealing from them. They aren’t. No one is forcing you to buy anything from them. Haven’t you ever heard of the phrase “batteries not included.” Hell, printer companies don’t even include the USB cable most of the time. It never stopped people from buying printers. And the companies that do include batteries or a charger, they are slow/cheap ones. So you just buy a fast one anyhow. You can buy a $13 18W USB-C/A adapter from Amazon that is better than the $29 USB-C only one Apple sells.

and what about people switching from android? hardly a warm welcome...
The rumors are that Apple is still including a Lightning to USB-C cable, the same one included with the iPhone 11 Pro models. You would easily be able to use an Android charger with it. My guess is Apple is going to put down a charger as an additional option, just like the way you can specify a mouse, trackpad, Final Cut Pro, etc. when you buy a Mac. If you need a charger, check the +$29 option for the rumored 20-watt charger and check out. Yes, it stinks, but I'd rather see a charger not included than see Apple raise the price by $50 just to include EarPods and chargers hardly anyone uses.

Note that Apple is paying the Qualcomm tax by now using their 5G modems. Samsung and OnePlus responded to Qualcomm's 5G chipsets by raising their prices dramatically over last year. If rumors are true, Apple is either cutting prices on the low end or keeping them the same on the high end. To do that, they have to cut somewhere. I'd rather see them cut in a place that won't affect most iPhone buyers since most of us have drawers full of unused EarPods and chargers. I'm 100% certain the tiny percentage who will need a charger will still have an option to add one at checkout.

no, you're probably right when i wrote that i was under the impression that "no charger" = "no charger/no cable".

seriously...it would be like Apple making an electric car and not including any way to charge the car.

What about first time iPhone buyers? They are out of luck to charge their iPhones.

Why not give people a choice when ordering a new iPhone?
Apple could give the option to have just the iPhone in an exquisite box and save say $30?
Or have the option to have a cable and charging brick and pay an extra $30?

A rumor is announced and we at MacRumors take that rumor off and running in all directions.

I find it not likely, if this rumor is true, that Apple would disenfranchise new customers by forcing them to get a separate charger, after the fact, especially with the hulabaloo with hey email, regarding user experience. Someone gets a new iphone 12 and has to wait for the charger? Not likely.

It's not out of the realm of infinite possibility, but I don't see it as very likely either. If this rumor is true, there will be some options available when ordering a new iphone 12 to ensure a phone and charger arrive simultaneously.

I'm skeptical as well. It could be Apple is just testing the waters so to speak on forums just like this one to gauge feedback

Not that it matters to me, but I am under the impression that the new iPhones will still use the lightning port. Are you saying that the new phones with us a USB-C input?

I’m saying is with iPhone 11 Pro they included a lightning to USB-C Cord. The USB-C end works in any USB-C charger. I don’t even use any cords that aren’t lightning to USB-C anymore because it takes too long with USB-A to charge anything.

Thanks for clearing that up. I understand about USB-C being faster for data transfer, but I didn't realize it also pertained to faster charging.
