I was thinking of switching to the iPhone 12 from my Galaxy S10+ just to try something else so I hope my Samsung USB C charger works with the iPhone. Should be a free option if you buy from Apple online. The phone is already expensive and we know Apple will mark up the charger’s price so I hope it’s a free option. Not paying another $80 to charge my phone.

Why not go the PlayStation 5 way? iPhone 12 with charger and an iPhone 12 (without a charger edition) for people who already have chargers.

"Apple would likely tout the environmental benefits of such a move."
It's also cynical and an insult to customers.
Apple customers do not care. Wallets always open for invasion regardless of quality, practicality, or price.

Stop exaggerating. It's not even good for comedic purposes, you just look ridiculous thinking they will ever charge for a software update.

Just wait 2 years and see.

ConSKUsion? To many options are bad, and Apple likely won't want to deal with people who got the wrong one. The environmental argument only makes sense if they can show evidence that people are not buying the charger, otherwise they are making more waste by adding packaging.

I've been hearing dissenters like you say crap like this for over a decade.

It's not happening no matter how much you want Apple to fail and their customers to revolt.

It will work yes...

Apple isn’t going anywhere with support from customers like you. They will sell you a phone with no operating system in which you’d have to pay to subscribe for and you’ll be the first to open your wallet.

Stop whining like spoiled 10-year-olds for a minute and think about how many unnecessary e-waste could be avoided if people would reuse their old chargers instead of having another one. Yeah, everyone wants only the best for the environment... but please, please don't dare to ask me being a part of it if it means I have to make a tiny sacrifice for it.

Anytime any company wants to move forward, some people will get pissed. Macbooks no longer have optical drives, ethernet, SD card reader, USB-A ports....

sheesh. Taking away headphone jacks, wires, ports, battery capacity, power adapters, and so forth isn’t enough to convince you. The RDF is so extreme.

other manufacturers somehow managed to release 5G phones at the same price as the previous model. It‘s just another way of maximizing margins.

Hmmm. I am not convinced this is true. The Galaxy S20 is more expensive, and the OnePlus devices either have limited 5G or decreased device specs. I feel like this holds true across manufactures. Either they cost more or they didn't get the appropriate spec bumps of a new generation device.

I'm glad MR outrage does not reflect reality. People will get mad about anything because humans hate change and will rationalize anything to not change the status quo.

The tech industry doesn't care about your feelings, business moves forward as usual. You can choose to vote with your wallet and not buy Apple (or any other brand).

Looking at the big picture, iPhones will sell as usual, this is a non-issue apart from a small vocal minority (way smaller than the headphone jack outrage).

This makes perfect sense. It's kind of surprising it hasn't been done earlier. These days, USB ports are as common as standard household sockets. In fact, for most households, there are more USB ports than standard sockets, from power bricks to computers, to speakers, to TVs.

This will only be a slight inconvenience for anyone who is buying a smartphone for the first time and doesn't have a computer laying around. Everyone else has a dozen power bricks from previous phones, cluttered up at the bottom of junk drawers.

Maybe if they supplied a decent charger in the first place, (like Samsung does) there wouldn't be a cluttered mess in drawers!

yes. New iPhone every year isn’t e-waste because that will be someone else’s problem. I like your rationality.

I wonder how many 5W power plugs I have around the house, somewhere. I either use an 18w one, or my Samsung wireless charging stand, depending on phone.

If they do this, I will not buy an Apple charger when I will need one. I will purchase and aftermarket charger.

I normally use my Samsung wireless charger at night. If I need to charge at work, I use a 3rd party charger. I don't tend to use the 5W ones since I want the option of plugging my iPad into it.
