Many times we want to think that our wishes are the reality. And, although if they’ve made it’s because there’s some market for small phones, the vast majority of people want a giant screen.

I'll make a wild guess, the giant screen people tend to have only one device, while the small screen folks probably have more devices, like ipad, mac. Driving them away from the ecosystem would mean more loss than just loosing some phone sales.

Curiously and because of COVID-19, there are many who have more money on their hands that otherwise would be spent on travels, restaurants and partying. So if you saved on these budgets post, it stands to reason to buy a little luxury in form of a "Pro".
but on the other hand thousands have lost their jobs

The camera’s are the biggest motivator. It’ the most tangible to most consumers. That’s why I am thinking I made a mistake getting the Pro and waiting for the Pro Max instead.
That Pacific Blue is going to be the one on most people’s hands.

Weaker demand for the iPhone 12 mini as expected. Most consumers aren’t interested in the smaller displays anymore. Reminds me of the original iPhone SE being less popular than the weaker spec iPhone 6 on the open market.

For some, that might be true. Sadly, for all too many, it might become hard even affording to pay for their SIM, or their broadband, or their food.

Another Covid-19 effect might well be that people who are struggling with an older phone have become ever more frustrated with its shortcomings. Some will have found they need to use their phones much more and, quite possibly, for things they didn't used to. Or simply realise the importance they might have. Dying batteries. Small, dim screens with low contrast. Insufficient storage. All these, and more, might just tip the balance towards replacing.

Which is why I have gone for graphite. I prefer the (relative) anonymity rather than everyone going "Pacific blue - they've got a 12!" - subconsciously. I don't really think there are many who purposely do that. :)

Just adding: All my previous smart phones, have been white or silver, work and personal. As for the original Nokia 3310 - well, the blue was quite nice.

Ooops - just adding, I forgot the black Windows phone I had from work! Mind, forgetting windows phones was probably a very good idea.

Yeah that one is really nice too, especially with the camera module being black and matching most cases. I was initially looking at that one, but the blue won me over.

One of the motivators for me ordering on day one was the thought that the 12 Pro might be more popular than expected.

I didn't want to end up in a queue waiting for more to be built which is taking longer because of the supply chain issues.

Apple might have assessed the total 12 demand well, so the components that are common across the range will likely be available. But model-specific components could well be hit be a change of balance of models.

Not claiming any wonderful foresight! Just thinking through the possibilities - if the 12 Pro were less popular than expected, so what. We were hardly going to see discounting. But, if more popular, then delays in supply seemed likely. So get ahead.

The pricing is close enough for the “Just a few more pounds/dollars per month you can have the best”, so that pushes people into 128GB iPhone 12 Pro territory.

Ultimately there’s a £150 price difference to the 12/Pro with 128GB storage, so 15% difference in price for - lidar, RAM, brighter screen, stainless steel, more cameras. One on hand there’s ‘value’ in the price increase and on the other it is still extra cost.

However, add the human element - Everyone likes being called “Pro”, you’ve seen it with Macs forever. Then combine that with new form factor, people want the ‘best’ of the newest, which is why the 12 Pro 128GB will sell in great volume.

I think this shows how many people are on monthly plans. “Just a few more pounds/dollars per month you can have the best”, so that pushes people into 128GB iPhone 12 Pro territory. Everyone likes being called “Pro”,

Your suggestion is likely true. But not for me - it is real money. Paying on a credit card but only for protection and, well, we need to use something to pay by!

That is why I thought about it long and hard. And decided, on balance, I would feel bad about paying £799 for a 12 and being disappointed that I hadn't paid the extra £200 (£999) for a 12 Pro. The same sort of thought process was behind all consideration of Android phones. (Though the support life of iPhones has always been considerably longer so that affects the perception of cost.)

(If my 6s had not been suffering an almost dead battery, I might have put it off for another year.)

I guess that's what happens when you jack up the price of the base model.

"Might as well go for the Pro, it's not that much more"

I think the average person also assumes it's more than just a camera upgrade, which is all it really is.

Wouldn't you be more anonymous having the same as everyone else?

Not so much personal anonymity - anyone nearby can see me by just looking! But in the sense of them seeing me using something they might well recognise as a phone, but not one that leaps out at them saying "IT IS AN IPHONE 12 PRO!!!".

There’s nothing shocking about that. How many consumers are probably even aware that Apple even removed the EarPods and adapter other than those who visit tech sites? (Rhetorical) They Probably won’t even know until they open up the box and realize they’re not included. It’s a non-issue. [Those EarPods by the way, end up in a drawer anyways unused, especially with Bluetooth being predominant.]
It’s not a non-issue for people who don’t have usb-c ports anywhere in their house.

I predict there will not be an iPhone 13.

There will, of course, be a successor to the 12, but I suggest it will not be called a 13.
But demand will be very high for all iPhones, you know for the hype reasons.

But still here in UK it‘s £150 more which is still a fairly big jump but i guess seems like many are ok with that jump. Maybe there’s a lot of upgraders who waited last year.

Well, the obvious is to incorporate the year, somehow, like Samsung.

My main reason for thinking they won't do that either is precisely because it is like Samsung.

Maybe they'll come up with a reason to leapfrog Samsung? iPhone 30 anyone? Or relate it to technology contained - so the 12 could have been the 14 due to the A14 chips. Next one might use an A15 chip with the obvious number 15. Just don't see that appealing because Samsung are already on 20.

I have tried to think of possibilities but no, I have no predictions for future numbering/naming other than avoiding 13.

Does it make any sense to buy the iPhone 12 256gb? Or is it better to directly switch to the pro instead, but for half the storage (128)? There is like 80 eur of difference between both in Europe.
