Upgrading from my X, I would miss the telephoto lens for sure. I also appreciate the brighter screen and more RAM and 128gb. Thats why I went with the Pro

I was wondering about the telephoto... I'm still on my sturdy 6S but want to upgrade for a better camera. I make videos for social media, mainly with my SONY A6400. I was wondering if the iPhone 12 (Pro) could be a much handier, quicker to setup device for filming, and if the telephoto would be a must. Any advise?

Well Apple did go with iOS 13, so why not iPhone 13 ?
Because IOS 13 is relatively behind the scenes. Not totally hidden, I agree. But 13 has connotations which might well not go down well in marketing terms when launching a new iPhone.

After all, marketing skipped the iPhone 9. But there was IOS 9.

Actually, I disagree, I think it’s the complete opposite. Just because consumers aren’t traveling, or spending money, there likely conserving more versus spending, given the uncertainty of the economy has been completely up and down in North America. These are uncertain times for quite a few different occupations, and I think you have a lot of consumers who are ‘watchful waiting‘ to see where the economy rebounds, which transcends into they’re likely rationing their money versus actually spending it on $1000 smart phones.
I do not think the price difference between pro and non pro is deciding much for a large majority. I can only look at my country and there are only a minor increase in job losses. This is not about conserving money, it because they have no chance to use them. For those in insecure positions, they are probably see the choice of pro and non pro quite academic and stick to conserving money as you suggest.

lets face it, Apple knew this would happen and its all about status. You don't preorder a phone called mini, you preorder a phone called pro max plus super duper best phone ever so you can one up all your friends

You don’t preorder a mini, or you can’t? I still want the mini and as far as knew I didn’t have an option to preorder it when the 12 came out.

To me that’s the biggest issue with these reports. Demand for the device that can be ordered is greater than those that can’t. Plus, the staggered launch means people have more time to breakdown and just get what is new instead of waiting for what they want.

Curiously and because of COVID-19, there are many who have more money on their hands that otherwise would be spent on travels, restaurants and partying. So if you saved on these budgets post, it stands to reason to buy a little luxury in form of a "Pro".
Agreed. Very obvious that big money is not being spent on pre covid entertainment(travel etc). The 5G is just what people need right now. Going to be a record setting iPhone year

The majority of people aren’t changing their phones each year, not even each two years and they want to future proof their phones for at least 3 to 4 years before upgrading to a newer one.

Stainless steel, more ram and a better camera setup helps with that and apparently they have no problem paying the price difference.
For $150 more it's a no-brainer to choose the iPhone 12 Pro over iPhone 12 w 128MB

That’s me. I’m still on my launch iPhone 7 128GB JB and it’s working perfectly. Changed the battery 2 years ago and I’m going to keep it till next year when we hopefully hit the 120HZ. No need for me to upgrade this year. Phone is still blazing fast and getting 5 years out of a iPhone will feel awesome! I used to upgrade every 2 years but haven’t had to since my 7. I started with the 4 went to the 5,6 and now the 7. The 12 is great but the 120HZ screen is what is going to push me over the edge to upgrade.

"iPhone 13: Bad Luck For Samsung". :)

Weaker demand for the iPhone 12 mini as expected. Most consumers aren’t interested in the smaller displays anymore. Reminds me of the original iPhone SE being less popular than the weaker spec iPhone 6 on the open market.
Almost everything sold worse than iPhone 6, the iPhone 6 was a huge seller.

And weaker demand compared only to his earlier guess—which means his latest guess might be more accurate. Or not; who knows?

In spite of Kuo revising his earlier guess, actual demand for the non-pros might be way better than Apple anticipated. That’s what really matters. We’ll never know in any case.

Starting with the 6S you can expect 5-6 years of use out of an iPhone without it feeling like it was slowing down. Pretty awesome.

Yes, as a 6s user I agree.

That said, iOS 14.0/14.0.1 is noticeably slower than 13, which ran great. This is the first time I’ve thought, this phone is slow. Hopefully the next .x release (or two) will speed things up a bit.

Your suggestion is likely true. But not for me - it is real money. Paying on a credit card but only for protection and, well, we need to use something to pay by!

That is why I thought about it long and hard. And decided, on balance, I would feel bad about paying £799 for a 12 and being disappointed that I hadn't paid the extra £200 (£999) for a 12 Pro. The same sort of thought process was behind all consideration of Android phones. (Though the support life of iPhones has always been considerably longer so that affects the perception of cost.)

(If my 6s had not been suffering an almost dead battery, I might have put it off for another year.)

I buy mine at purchase outright, this time I’ve gone for the iPhone 12 128GB from an iPhone X 256GB. I don’t need the storage as I stream everything. I must admit, I’m still on the fence whether I should have just spent the extra £150 for the sake of brightness, camera and RAM. Lidar I don’t care about. It’s not particularly a cost constraint, more so sticking to the principle of a budget.

Its simple..... Everyone was expecting 12 / 12 Max and 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max.... Apples marketing game has it to were those who want the bigger screen this year have to shell out an extra $400+ to get a a bigger screen (12 Pro Max). (me being in that boat as well) All i want is a big screen, i dont care about the other things. I made the mistake of downgrading from 8 Plus to normal 11 last year and absolutely hate the screen size as its not big enough for me.

It’s alway fun to speculate but only Apple knows for sure. It really doesn’t matter to me what other people buy, though.

I’ve also been thinking of the 12 mini, but I want to try out the 6.1” models to see how much bigger/heavier they are than my 6s. I carry my phone in my front pocket, so I’ve been wanting something smaller and lighter, and that’s the mini.

I would reckon that this was Apple's strategy all along.

Sell the more expensive iPhone 12 Pro by making it seem the better deal over the already high priced iPhone 12.

a new one every year ??

Plot twist: the iPhone 4S ever since.

This is specifically about the Pro vs the non-pro. So in this case non-pro demand was lower than expected.

It’s a nice problem to have (the more expensive model being more popular).

I think this is a valid point. While we could also say that there are millions who are in financial peril from the Pandemic I have personal experience with a friend who is ordering from your point. Given that they did not travel or do much this summer they decided for the 12 Pro Max as "they had the extra money, no problem."

OTOH, I also think there are a large amount of Pro orders from people that will keep the device 3-4 years easily as a "future proofing" plan.

Personally, I'll wait to see where thing are in the late spring. Too many unknowns over the next 6m.

I went from a 5.5" 7+, to a 6.1" XR (for one year), to a 6.5" 11 Pro Max.

When I had the XR, I thought it was the perfect size.

When I got the 11 Pro Max, I still thought it (i.e., the XR) had the perfect size.

The extra DRAM in the 12 Pro is BIG, & "could be" a Game Changer for (certain) High Perf apps !

The 12 Pro is priced the same as the 11 Pro.

The 12 is priced $100 USD higher than the 11.

NOT surprised the 12 Pro is doing much better than expected.

NOT surprised the 12 isn't.

It’s not a non-issue for people who don’t have usb-c ports anywhere in their house.
Only if they also:
  1. Don't have a USB-A -> Lightning cable
  2. Don't have a USB-A socket
  3. Want or need faster charging sufficently
Many would be perfectly happy to continue charging from USB-A like a lot of us have for years. If you just plug it in at bed-time and don't have a very demanding phone use schedule, it would be fine.

Most of the time, that would include me.

I care far more about faster charging from the car when using the phone as a satnav. Obviously I don't know how the 12 Pro will perform, but in the past I have found ordinary vehicle charging sometimes unable to keep up with discharge rate.
