I love Lightning and always have. It has that secure fit, it’s minimalistic and I’ve always had consistency with no charging infrequency with lightning, however; I do think there needs to be a stronger consistency across Apple’s product line with the iPad, iPhone, AirPods, etc. It just will make it consistent for the user in the ecosystem without having to mix & match cables. I’d say this rumor is completely accurate and right in line for 2023, likely with the iPhone 14 be the last year to support Lightning included in the box.

I like the lightning connector, but at this point I would just assume go all USB-C since most of my devices are USB-C connectors. It would be nice to carry one cable instead of two, but... USB-C is a hot mess right now. Multiple data speeds, some have pass-through power, some data only, some Thunderbolt 3, some TBolt 4. And all have the same Thunderbolt marking on them so you can't tell what the heck you have.

wireless charging is actually the most convenient.

Not really. Takes a million years to charge, you can’t use your phone while charging and good luck just trying to charge it laying in a backpack. Oh and let’s not forget the heat and the impact on the battery.

Guess I’ll be holding onto my 12 Pro Max for another year and get the battery replaced eventually. That’s the only thing that is starting to show it’s age

I hope this is true but im sure he said the 2021 iPhones would be usb-c.
I’ll believe it when I see it. Apple makes too much money off their proprietary lightning port to give it up unless they’re worried about antitrust laws.
I dont think they make that much money from it. How many MFI devices does the average person buy per year? I'd bed its less than 1.

Such legislation, if passed, would require Apple to either ship specially designed USB-C equipped models of its products to Europe while keeping the rest of the world stuck with Lightning or adopt USB-C for all of its products globally.

Or just ship all of their iPhones in the EU with a Lightning > USB-C dongle, as they have done in the past with the Lightning > 3.5 mm earphone jack adapters.

There are some big drawbacks to wireless charging. It wastes a lot of energy - remember how a 5w Qi pad needed at least a 10w charging block? Right there that tells you that half the power is wasted - in an age of increased utility costs these losses will add up. Also, wireless charging (especially fast wireless charging) causes heating which knackers the battery health. So many 12-18 month old iPhones on eBay have battery health values in the 80s when before the advent of wireless and fast charging a phone this old would still typically have well over 90% health.

Magsafe does improve this a bit (the magnets fully align the coils to minimise heat and power loss) but no as much as plugging a cable in. In my view wireless charging should be occasional 'top-up' charging (e.g. in a coffee shop or airport lounge) rather than a full overnight charge.

It was bound to happen. I’d rather that than going cordless/wireless.

Does this mean other devices (Keyboards, Trackpads, Powerbeats Pro etc) will follow suit? If not, then the EU has just wasted everyones time.
The EU has always been wasting everyone’s time by focussing on standardising the socket in the Phone rather than simply requiring power bricks to have standard sockets (which Apple has done for a long time). Last I looked, power bricks with captive cables (landfill as soon as the cable gets frayed) were perfectly OK by the EU as long as they had the right plug on the end…

Those that want to keep lightning obviously have never tried to transfer data from a so called “pro” phone to their laptop via lightning.

It’s utter TRASH.

Let the stand models and SE keep it for those complaining but Pro phones should not be using USB 2.0 LMFAO.

I can’t wait for the switch, as someone said, I’m sure they’ll be pushing MagSafe everywhere to try and keep that extra money. Going truly wireless won’t work for Good few years yet and selling pro phones with such embarrassing transfer speeds is a joke and they know it now.

If 8k on the 14 pro is true then god help anyone wanting to transfer that over lightning.

If technology moves based on what makes people "happy", we would still be using floppy disk now. People get comfortable and hate changes.
Floppies were inferior technology by the time they were removed and that just isn't the case regarding cabled charging vs induction charging..
But it was expected someone would keep repeating that like it's some kind of law applicable to every shift.
You or someone similar probably said the same when MacBooks lost ports and got that wonder keyboard everybody loved.

Especially when transferring ProRaw and ProRes. Thank you EU for bringing the iPhone into the future. Hopefully AirPods Pro 2 will be USB C this year too. Hopefully all accessories and devices move to USB C.

What about the lightening port in the rest of the Apple ecosystem? AirPods, keyboards, mice?

Looking forward to the trudging exorcism of all usb-a ports in my home. Gonna take a while.

That is something that I don't get either. So much confusion with USB-C and TB cables. Why not stick with one cable that can do both charging and data transfer? I wouldn't be surprised if the iPhone 15, which comes in 2023 with the USB-C connector, it's going to the USB 3.0 transfers (5 Gbit/s) which was released in 2013.

But since the latest iPad Pro comes with TB3/USB 4 connector, I am a little optimistic about it. OR, Apple can give the EU regulators the middle finger and release the future iPhones without ports (Wireless).
