It's absolutely not a "huge" issue. It's a tiny issue …

An iPhone uses less than 5kWh a year. If the efficiency is 50%, that's 5kWh wasted per year.
The average US houshold uses 11,000kWh per year. So that's 0.05% increase per phone.

Yes, it adds up globally. But it's ridiculous to even talk about, given all the actually huge environmental issues out there. Compared to all the energy wasted through inefficiencies in a typical household, it's a rounding error. Stop telling yourself you're a hero of the environment for saying no to wireless charging. Better take a hard look at your next TV, fridge, dryer and car …
Ah, the "I'm one person and can’t make an impact" argument. It would be better if the "rounding error" was rounding down, not up!

One has to wonder what happened in Apple that it's EU that pushes them not to rely on on USB 2 speed standard from year 2000! in their flagship product..
One can understand some reluctance about the port connector for whatever legacy thinking, especially if they work on wireless version and going from USB 2 speed might look more like an upgrade later, but c'mon, the speed is just ridiculous, especially when Apple is "all about the performance" ;)

Excellent article!

Kuo forgot to mention one thing, though: “Apple will release devices with USB-C when they have perfected the technology. It is too undeveloped for Apple’s high standards. Maybe 2023, guys.”

Lightning fans: don't worry, I'm sure there will be a USBc-to-Lightning dongle so you can keep using what you love.

USBc fans: worry, because this only applies to phones and Lightning (licensing) is more profitable to Apple than USB. So any idea of getting down to carrying a single cable for everything is probably deferred to well beyond "next year."

Wireless charging fans: this is a win only if the world adopts having compatible pads everywhere so one can confidently leave wires behind. Else, instead of carrying 1 or 2 cables, you are carrying a much bigger pad and a cable through which to power it... and probably 1-3 cables/dongles because the rest of the stuff you carry will still split between USB, USBc and Lightning.

Isn't "One cable to rule them all" fun? ;)

I hope the iPhone never goes portless

I don’t jailbreak anymore so I don’t really care about losing DFU (although I’d be very pissed if I have to take my iPhone to the apple store to unbotch the software) but wireless anything is SO unreliable
Try wireless debugging something in Xcode and you’ll go back to USB in like 10 minutes - so many instances of just having to reboot so that it works properly (or at all).

I’ll take those juicy USB 3.1 transfer speeds over the “convenience” of wireless any time of day.

I don't think they will make it EU only, but you know if they did someone would spin up web store offering grey market Euro spec phones in the US.

USB-C is better, faster, and cheaper than the Lightning
The only agreeable part is cheaper. The rest is, imo, false.

USB-C is not better. The port takes up more space, and more fragile due to the stupid male connector inside the port. This also made the port harder to clean or dry out.
USB-C is not faster. Pretty much all mid-range Android or lower with USB-C are also USB2.0 speed. Even Xiaomi's flagship is USB2.0. USB-C is just the connector. Plenty of cheap USB-C cables are basically just USB2.0 cables with USB-C connector. And iPad Pros did have Lightning at USB3 speed.

Nobody prevents you from using you favourite method.
Unlike removing the port which would leave a lot of people unhappy.
But, yes, lots of courage.

And would we be here without the EU? We will never know. And we don't even know if this will happen. Just a rumour.
Uh no.

In a way it's somewhat disappointing to me because that means I probably won't be getting a new iPhone this year ('probably' in life there are no guarantees). I'm sure this news will have some affect at least on MacRumors readers sales. I read some posts people saying basically wireless charging sucks well to them this may be true, but I think we should all remember Magsafe. Magsafe really turned out to be more than just a wireless charger with a magnet. So, USB-C I'm thinking it's just the middleman to maybe try and make us happy (and the EU) like they did on the Macbook Pro M1 where they added HDMI, SDCard reader, and Magsafe charging. Seems like from an engineering/manufacturing standpoint it won't be too difficult to transition to. The new cable and accessory sales will more than make up the cost of manufacturing retooling.

I’m still keen to upgrade my iPhone XS to the iPhone 14 this year, keep all my cables for another 3-4 years and avoid the silly pill + hole punch.

I’m all ready for wireless, as long apple could allow data transfer via MagSafe. Especially for Apple Car Play as I don’t have wireless CarPlay in my car ?‍?

Lightning is more fragile due to its direct exposure without protection.

Unfortunately most of us will still have both cables for years to come since the lifespan of an Apple mobile device is so long.

Hopefully Apple will have a cable recycling program to combat this new source of e-waste.

Lightning was great when it was released, nothing else really existed and it was a great replacement for that 30 pin connector but now we have alternatives. I will be very glad when the iPhone changes to USB-C. In fact, I will probably keep my iPhone 12 until the iPhone has USB-C.

I’ve never had a a lightning cable fail at the connector. I can’t speak for USB-C because I haven’t used it enough but it’s definitely not an issue. I will say it’s a lot tougher than micro USB which I have quite a bit of experience with and that completely sucks.

It’s just going to encourage me to use wireless instead of cables. Yes it’s a little bit less efficient and environmentally friendly but it’s a PITA to carry around two separate chargers.

Well I personally don't like the type see they can get easily damaged with them having all the prongs in there I think every phone should personally runt the lightning charger from iPhone and it don't charger faster with type c if anything it's just now catching up because it usually take 3 hours for my friends to charger their androids and my phone when dead literally hr and half tops

Exactly what benefits will you get from USB-C? The only thing I could think of is faster transfer speed but that would only apply if you’re using it a lot for video. I don’t so perhaps that’s why I don’t really see this as an issue

It really isn’t.

Wireless Charging requires direct placement in order to properly charge, and I find it’s inconsistent at times, Especially when it moves around in the car due to motion.

And I’m also not entirely comfortable with how warm my iPhone is when it is wireless charging, which can’t be healthy for the Li-ion battery.
I thought it wasn't as convenient as well until I bought a duo charger for traveling and a magsafe charger for the car, it's pretty effortless locking into place to charge and then grabbing and going. I am looking at the battery pack for those in between moments where I can't sit around. I only plug my phone in now when I absolutely need CarPlay maps.
