I think the iPhone 16 will be last iPhone based on the "current" design. The iPhone 17 may be the first significant redesign in several years, mostly because of the upcoming EU mandate for user-swappable batteries. It may result in a thicker phone to accommodate the user-removable battery pack, which would have the effect of also eliminating the camera bump, too. This change will also likely change the design of the Samsung Galaxy S models by 2026, too.
EU is lately becoming too nosy and even monopolizing in mobile phone business. It started with USB-C port, now batteries, then software & App Store, etc. What’s the next? Some are good for user, but may not as good for the philosophy of competitive free market.

As an end user, I don’t wish to sacrifice phone size and weatherproofing for some swappable batteries. They usually last about 3 years, mate it’s not an alkaline AA-battery torch.

Actually, I like the idea of user-swappable batteries if the whole case is properly engineered. That way, I don't end up dealing with things like battery cases for the phone or plugging in an external battery to charge the phone (sealed batteries on the iPhone and more recent Samsung Galaxy X models explain why external battery power banks have been very popular lately).

FUD, I’ve been looking forward to purchasing the iPhone 16 Pro Max to replace my 13PM: a bigger size, Dynamic Island, some new limited AI stuff for Siri (while keeping my info private). I’m excited! Nice way to film stuff outdoors for my AVP… 👍🏻

Sadly it sounds like a boring release. I’m concerned there will be nothing in the new 16 that my 13 Pro can’t already do.
I honestly find the android flagships like the Pixel 8 pro and Samsung S24 Ultra more interesting.
If you’re talking about read emails and check Facebook you’d be correct. And while the iPhones 13 and 15nhave features in common there are differences: (and whether they matter for you YMMV)
- always on display
- crash detection
- satellite communication
- action button (which is really useful)
- iPhone 15 better/sleeker looking
- better cameras
- dynamic portraits; more zoom options etc
- better cellular chip/wifi 6e
- better screen
- battery charging limit at 80%
- plus more

Whether or not these mean a hill of beans is all subjective. Some people carry on happily with older phones on older iOS versions. The USB-C brings additional capabilities as well. (And again the usefulness is subjective)

Based on rumors the iPhone 16 at this time seems like a stellar upgrade.

well ... that's because everyone in hardware design seems to be leaving the company!

Fold here I come! (I'll continue to have my 15 Plus for my iOS needs)
I knew something like this will happen so i went for the Samsung galaxy s24 Ultra and no regrets.
i have an iPad Pro so I’m really happy for the decision i made.

If people took proper care of their devices, user-swapable batteries wouldn't be needed, like charging only when the battery is low and not charging it to the max every time, batteries don't live forever and it seems like the EU wants to create more hazardous waste in this case. Apple has become so much better with access to battery replacements in-store, yes if you don't have Apple Care it is a bit more expensive. Still, I'd rather have a trained professional replace the battery on my device than do it yourself which could cause more harm than good to your device even IF the companies made it User-Swappable, the amount of new phones bought would be much higher than the replacement batteries.

Not everyone is tech-savvy and I could see the headlines now, "Thousands hospitalized after trying to replace battery on their mobile devices".

And of course, having an external battery backup is always the best option in an emergency compared to a replacement internal battery, because an external battery backup is a grounded and protected metal box compared to a replacement battery that if bent, left in the heat, or forgotten about could explode and cause so much more damage
