How many millions? Three? Five? Ten? Twenty?

Still niche when you’re selling 200 million a year.

There are companies making a living selling way less than 3 million phones a year, so I am sure Apple could do it in a profitable way, especially given that this hypothetical 4"-iPhone would still share a lot of R&D with the rest of the line.

But I guess Apple may (correctly) think that an 8-based SE2 will be good enough for most SE-fans, who will (grudgingly) switch given the lack of alternatives, and the remaining die-hards are really too few to bother with. Thus the SE2 covers most of the 4"-niche and those looking for a cheaper iPhone - more profit.

We want a small phone that is easy to use with one hand is not bigger than SE (even a little smaller height wise would be good) as many of us are sick of carrying bricks around which look IMO disgusting and are extremely annoying. Many people are forced to buy these bricks as apple and all these idiots that copy each other dish out bricks and some people (due to insecurity) have to buy those bricks. Give us same specks small phone as any other so called flagship (flagship? what a stupid name) and please no annoying slippery round sides/edges; make them as in SE so easy to grab, hold and sits nicely when played down on table and no protrusion camera and NO ugly notch.

iPhone 6 dimensions with edge to edge screen. Best of both worlds. You can actually reach the top of the phone and it has the big screen of an iPhone X.
you can't reach top of phone easily and its still too big; if you put your hand up high then maybe but your finer will hurt as hell trying to stretch it up and down with every move...SE is max size for comfort actually a little shorter would be ideal with maybe slightly wider but not sure of proportions if that would match.

Coming back to the topic, Kuo has been full of **** recently, he promised us the 16” MBP would release in September, then he changed to October and still nothing!!!

His credibility is sinking fast

Give it 5g and an a13 bionic and I'm game.
Won’t be 5G, not only is the Qualcomm 2nd gen modem not yet shipping, but Apple would be extremely unlikely imo to introduce 5G in a $400 entry level iPhone, when even the $1,100 top-of-the-line flagship 11 Pro Max doesn’t have it. Maybe with a refresh in 2021 or 2022.

What you're asking is impossible, you can't cram an iPhone 11 inside an iPhone 5 dimension. Things like motherboards, camera's, cpu's etc. don't just magically shrink or become more efficient.

The iPhone X logic board is super tiny and most of the case is filled with the battery. Smaller screens need less power, so the space balances out.

One thing I can say for sure is that components definitely shrink from generation to generation. Look at the logic board of a MacBook Pro. You'd almost think it was the inside of a mobile device.

One thing is for sure, with all of the recent rumors of this “SE 2” coming early next year, if it doesn’t, this place will be a madhouse.

It doesn't balance out even by a long shot. Plus the logic boards amount to a large part of the case (maybe look at a Ifixit guide once to see the internals...), battery is like a third of the internal space of the smaller iphone. And then you ask them to make that phone more than a third smaller which means that they can't even fit in the internals without a battery, let alone with. It's really not that hard to comprehend and again, components don't just magically shrink by that much and haven't for quite a few generations now. Sure you can save space in notebooks, but those have A LOT more space to save than an already incredibly jammed phone.

The take that you can just put in a smaller battery because smaller screen is wrong, screens are for quite a few years now not that power hungry and really don't amount to the majority of battery life which they once did.

We already knew it’s coming at the end of Q1. The biggest remaining question is how capable will the camera be.
Which at the end of the day determines how desirable of an upgrade it is for iPhone 6, 6s, 7 and 8 owners, as well as for those SE owners who don’t mind the 4.7 size and also people upgrading from Android. Pretty much for all potential buyers.
Please report on the camera , Mr. Kuo.

The timing makes perfect sense, same as it was for SE. We will just need to see the actual phone now (size, weight, etc.). For me, personally, the lighter and smaller - the better.

For people currently on the fence and not on a tight budget, it would also be interesting to see what comes out next September. The rumoured 5,4” “smaller high-end phone” should be roughly the same size as 6-8, considering its edge-to-edge screen. With a better (Qualcomm) 5G modem, possible ProMotion and being inevitably less expensive than the “fully-sized” siblings (5,7” and above), this could be a great device too. Unless Apple just drops the current 5,7” size, replaces it with 5,4” and charges the same. 😋

As a current SE owner and someone who really loves the phone, I'm still interested in this refreshed iPhone 8. My biggest issue with the SE is the screen size and it's too damn small to use for anything productive, like texting, writing, or emailing.

As long as Apple don't skimp out on the specs (which I doubt considering how when the SE released it was pretty much on par with the 6s), I'll definitely consider picking one up.

Fingers crossed the refreshed iPhone 8 gets the same camera as the iPhone 11 and night mode with it.

Some people think that we like small SE factor phone due to price but most of us like it due to its small size , being pretty light 113 grams, easy to hold and use with one hand, doesn't look ridiculously brick like when using (hello 1980s) andi snot very annoying when placing in pant or shirt pocket. Apple is getting their statistics wrong a they probably follow numbers but those numbers cannot be real as many people HAVE to buy larger as there is no smaller available. Simple. Many people also do not use phones for media or social media (or rarely) as they use TV, computers, iPads for that they want small phone preferably with same quality camera also as any other phone they make.

Also, will it have wireless charging and a glass back?
We knew from the start it’s an iPhone 8 body though, not iPhone 7 so my guess both are a given. I don’t see Apple cutting any corners here. I would personally prefer the iPhone 7 body as more durable, but it’s not a part of the “to buy or not to buy” equation.

But that is what makes SE special is easy use of one handed texting, writing email; try that with any other size as you have to hold it with other hand to accomplish that so you are mistaken plus over time the extra weight and size gets to be very annoying

SE was not about a small size for Apple, it was about a super low price.

The vast majority of SE buyers bought the cheapest iPhone they could get at the time. I recall it got insanely cheap at the very end (deals as low as $150 or so). Heck I almost bought one as a backup iPhone it got so cheap.

One last appeal Tim before you enter mass production. Its not that we want cheap, we want small! You’ve got the iPhone pro, how about the iPhone mini? I’ve hung on to my SE because I like to go running without a brick in my pocket.

+1

A smaller device doesn't mean smaller screen size, Tim... The size of the iPhone SE is not that «small» if you Apple could make a full display (like the X and it's successors) device in a smaller format (like 5 inch or something). Call it iPhone Mini, and you have a winner!

An new iPhone 8-ish device in state of size and form is just to «big» and «outdated», for someone like me :)

Sounds like a great phone for those who still prefer the somewhat smaller size and don’t care for the feature and price creep of the current phones. One thing that might be a deal breaker for me is if it doesn’t have wireless charging. It never really made sense to me for home charging, but I really got used to it with my wireless car charging on the 8 and wouldn’t want to give that up.

maybe for some but for most is the size and unique look not price; people that use larger phones want to make themselves feel good that they spend more on larger phone so they say its about price, NO its not about price it has to do with form factor and if this SE2 looks like that ugly iPhone 8 with protruding camera, large size and rounded edges it is a no no, they should not bother

The iPhone SE screen was the best form factor for people who love the smaller iPhones. It would’ve been nice if apple incorporated the small form factor into the new design. 4.7” is still a bit too large for most people.

Sure it's easy to use one handed, but terrible to write accurately and efficiently. The smaller screen gives you a smaller keyboard and barely any space to see what you're writing.

The iPhone 8 size is still useable with one hand, and with it you get a larger keyboard and larger display. Sure the weight will be a little more but we're talking about a 30 gram or so difference, if that's a deal breaker then maybe you should hit the gym.

I like the SE but some of you hardcore fanboys of the phone need to get over it. The SE was a one time thing and there will never be another 4" screen sized iPhone again. It's time to move on.
