I honestly wonder how many of the people that upgrade to the newest iPhone every year, actually get $1,000 worth of value from it.

I’d say most get that value. Value includes usability, productivity, and even social perception. Value is really personal. While I may not value the phone that much others do. Likewise they may not value what I spend my money on. What does bother me is people who pay $1,000 for a phone and then complain about not having money for school, rent, clothes, food or something else.

So assuming this new SE won’t have 3D Touch... what are the chances of Apple adding a bigger battery for iPhone 11-like battery power?

The iPhone 8 has a Qualcomm and Intel modem, if you got an unlocked model here in the UK for example as I understand it came with a Qualcomm modem. So was the Qualcomm a waste for every iPhone prior to the XR and XS? They could happily stick to the Qualcomm modem the 8 came with and still have better reception then any flagship iPhone, including thenXT and 11! And it would keep in line with their ambition to use Qualcomm modems in all iPhones next year.

The Qualcomm X16 in iPhone 8 is an older product that doesn't support LTE+LTE dual-SIM. With eSIM, Apple acts as a gatekeeper and can collect a toll from carriers. The X16 also supports slower LTE speeds compared to current Intel modems.

iphone 8 battery ~2675mAh
iphone 11 pro max battery ~3,969mAh

and same A13 doesn't make sense to me but what would I know..

I don't look at it that way since it's worth about half of what I paid for after 12 months of use at about $500.

i doubt very much the SE will have an esim.. as for LTE+, I don’t expect anyone would notice the difference and are more then happy with 30 to 40 mbps on a device with a 4.7” screen. I think your really reaching here.. in most markets no one uses an esim and is still used to regular ones.

I wish they also made SE Plus 5.5" 1080p then I'm definitely buying immediately! 🥳
I don't have iPhone 6 Plus but just as old android phone (5.5" 1080p and can't imagine going smaller) I was actually thinking of upgrading now to iPhone 7 Plus (especially since the brand new iPad is also A10) but I wait now to see this SE 2.
I know a lot of people wish SE 2 was 4", it seems like there is a market for small but top-spec and they say they would pay more, but I think the market for big but cheap is a lot bigger.

They want people to get the Xr or 11 instead if they desire the dual camera w/ optical zoom (that the 8 Plus has) or the wide-angle from the 11 instead. Or a larger screen / resolution, battery etc...

For Apple, small means entry-level or budget. Same thing as with the current SE. Today the SE is loved because of it's compact size, but Apple really introduced it because they wanted to give people a true budget option. (And 399$ is pretty much budget for Apple.)

Their sizes and resolution differentiate them. 8 Plus is 1080p, Xr/11 isn't 1080p but more close to 1080p than the regular 8 with it's 750p.

5.5" / 6.1" vs. the 4.7". I think Apple will just discontinue the 8 Plus in March 2020 when this new SE is due.

- new upgraded iPhone 8, with no Plus model
- iPhone Xr
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro (Max)

Just speculation though, of course. Apple can't sell the new upgraded 8 (with the A13) next to the 2017 version of the 8 Plus with the A11. The customer doesn't know enough about those phones, they would think that the 8 Plus also has the current A13, while it would not. And there are no rumors of an updated 8 Plus... again Apple just wants you to get the Xr or 11 instead (and pay more). Which is sad because i love my 8 Plus. Such an amazing phone, i can't say it enough.

eSIM is a money maker for Apple because Apple's eSIM implementation is proprietary. If you want to show up as an eSIM carrier for iPhone, you need to pay Apple. eSIM is about what's good for Apple.

So any point to waiting for this vs just buying an iPhone 8? Perhaps it will have the A13 chip, but Apple handsets are hardly hurting for power. The iPhone 8 also retains 3D Touch (for those that care about it).

As it's the smallest phone they have (yes, smaller than the iPhone X series), this is really the only choice for people whose SE is growing long in the tooth (or short in the battery, as mine is).

Edit: So, next year's lineup:
  • iPhone SE2 (I wish they'd call it iPhone 9!) - $399
  • iPhone Xr (reduced price) - $499
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max (reduced price) - $599, $899, $999
  • iPhone 11s or 12 (likely 12) and 12 Max - $999, $1099
That's a pretty wide swath, but you might as well take advantage of the manufacturing you already have.

I don't like the 6/7/8 form factor at all. Dislike the rounded corners and it doesn't balance well in my hands. Trying their models out in store, I was surprised to prefer the slightly larger X/Xs/11 Pro over the iPhone 8 - even though my favorite form factor is the SE by far.

Today the SE is loved because of it's compact size, but Apple really introduced it because they wanted to give people a true budget option
This.

And vice versa: Most people wanting a budget option won't necessarily want such tiny phone as the SE. Different demographics.

I'm still holding my breath for a well-equipped small phone. (and yes, I do believe the market and demand is big enough, especially compared to some other products Apple deems worthy to keep as part of their current lineup)

Bigger battery, yes. The 3D Touch layer takes considerable space from the battery.

Battery as big as iPhone 11? Probably not. The double decker logic board on iPhone 11 series saves space, but is expensive to manufacture.

Why would I care about what makes money for Apple? Are you a shareholder as you seem very concerned about Apple making money? It’s not going to use it when you will have to use a SIM tray anyway for anyone to buy a cheaper iPhone in certain markets.

Not a shareholder - just explaining why it's likely Apple will use an known Intel modem for SE2, with eSIM support.

Hip hip, hooray! Now the SE fanboys will have something to toss to...finally. Lord knows they would never shut up about this garbage dump of a phone.

It really is a useless piece of junk in 2019 (doesn't even serve as a paperweight since it's so light).

But don't say that out loud or you'll get beat up around here

so they’d want to spend more by using an esim and a sim card tray just to make some money in only a few select markets.. that makes zero sense. And is really a flawed argument to use. Also as I stated it’s been said in 2020 EVERY iPhone launched will have a Qualcomm modem in it. Apple didn’t spend millions fighting then settling with Qualcomm to throw the money in the bin..
And im pretty sure Qualcomm modems will support esims too.

Are you sure it's not 5 years starting from their launch date, which would leave the 8 with 3 years of iOS updates ? Honest question.

I honestly don’t know, (though I imagine you’re right) it has been a claim many have made in these forums. I have a 6S so I expect just one more update (IOS 14?), but that would be pretty mean for those buying brand new 6S’s only last year.

Wrong! I have all the data I need. The fact it doesn't exist confirms people don't want it. Apple builds what people want, period.

If you think Apple sold over 200M iPhones in FY2018 without an updated SE and it was a major seller, you are kidding yourself.

Wrong.

once again ill explain it to you. apple sells us what they can get away with selling to maximize their profits.. it has nothing to do with what we want. if there were choices then i would agree with you. but there are no choices.. you ether pick what they sell or buy an android phone which many just refuse to do. not really much of a choice is it??

in what way is it junk? i had an SE, it got damaged so i got a XSfor 8 months or so. hated it. so i grabbed another SE when costco had some new ones.

it works perfectly for everything the XS did. but it is much better in many ways. the only thing the XS did that was clearly better was the camera.

You’re making my point. Apple sells what people will buy. I don’t think people are idiots just buying what they are shown. People buy what they like and don’t buy what they don’t like, period.

The SE isn’t something enough people want, or it would exist. Welcome to business. Welcome to capitalism.

It has worse everything, dismal battery life, a 2015 camera, and a very small screen. Better does not mean “I don’t care abou the billion things it does better”.

I liked my iPhone 5 too, in 2013. Switched to the 6 in 2014. Hard to understand people why people are still holding on to these fun-size phones - the no.1 complaint with the5S was that it was too small.

I feel like I can't even justify purchasing this yet, even though I have the money, simply because of how well my SE works on iOS 13. It would really be upgrading for no reason... except maybe for increased battery life.
I love my SE too, but SE and 6S are next in line to be left behind, so there’s your reason. Potential news of an SE2 is welcome, but yeah, keep it small. That’s the secret sauce.

The battery lasts just as long as my xs.
the camera is fine for what most people use it for. Could it be better, sure. But I don’t look back at pictures taken in 2015 and cry about their quality. Beyond a certain point it really doesn’t matter.

The screen is fine for what I want it to do. If I want more
got a Mac mini with a $1000 30” monitor which is 10x better than any phone.

but nothing you say makes it junk.

In my opinion the iPhone 6s is the best
Meh. I have SE and my gf has 6S, and I can’t stand using her phone. The power button on the side is ridiculous, exactly where my fingers need to be to hold the thing. SE is still perfect, and fits my watch pocket. :)

People aren’t all the same. I have tablets and bigger if I want to stream something, I do *not* want to carry my stream viewer in my pocket all day. Read the room, the majority on this thread are very happy with their small form factor SE, so there’s clearly a market.
This thread makes a market? Again, it’s not about would people buy an SE, but would they not buy another iPhone because they were so in love with a tiny form factor?

The answer is clearly a resounding no and it doesn’t stop with just Apple. Literally no major manufacturer makes a small form factor phone. Not enough people want it and/or they are just as happy buying something with a larger screen.

If people wanted it in large enough numbers, it’d exist.

Yeah... if the SE is junk then 6s is also junk since it's basically the same phone. furthermore, it can be argued that all other iphones are junk too since their year-to-year improvement is barely noticeable apart from the camera (not my opinion but many people say so)
