Nah, I shouldn’t be expected to back track your convo with another member. FTR, you said “Do we know the SE sales?” I replied by stating it’s clearly indicative we don’t _need_ to know the SE sales given this phone was available for over two years, obviously it was successful in its own right. Make sense now?
Yes, that makes perfect sense. Don't bother wasting precious 2 seconds to understand context. Just pretend everyone on the internet makes every statement in a vacuum.

Everybody's use case is different so I understand why some want a smaller phone. I hope they make want you want again someday.

What I have trouble understanding is how a iPhone 6/7/8 isn’t pocketable. I understand if you’re wearing hot pants but I just cant understand how that size isn‘t manageable. What am I missing in this equation?

For me it’s less about size and more about the weight and its slippery feel. Still, it’s not as bad as the 11 and 11 pro.

We know that sales were greater than Apple expected in its first quarter. It also edged out the iPhone 6S & 7 on customer satisfaction.

Sales dropped off as it became older. The SE was in a difficult place, because it was trying to satisify two different markets who wanted different things.

Apple’s decisions on what products they do and don’t sell is more complex then “will it sell”, its “will it canalise other models”, “what will the profit margins be”, etc etc etc.

I’d personally rather a spec bumped SE for a range of reasons, but I’d certainly prefer a 5.4 inch iPhone to a 5.8 inch iPhone.

Definitely . If the weight of that 5.4 is heavier than the current pro, well SE2 it is

Lately, using my iPhone SE has been a real PITA only because of its small screen size. General browsing, texting, and writing emails is an absolute chore because of the small screen and I've been seriously contemplating about just getting an iPhone 8, but I guess I'll just hold off a little longer for that rumoured refreshed 8 and see how that turns out.
Frankly, if I didn’t have iPad Mini I would have upgraded from SE to something bigger (probably something Xiaomi) some time ago. But SE+Mini is a winning combo, I couldn’t recommend it enough. Both devices excel at their respective use cases. Mini is ideal for browsing, videos, reading books and writing texts (long ones too) while still being light and easy to hold for indefinite time, and the SE is perfect for every task you might want to do while on the go. I’m ok with switching to 4.7 size (and it’s not like there are smaller options anyway) but I don’t necessarily need to.

I can afford a more expensive phone. But I don’t want to spend that much money on a phone. It just isn’t worth it to me. I don’t get $1,000 worth of value from a high end phone.

I honestly wonder how many of the people that upgrade to the newest iPhone every year, actually get $1,000 worth of value from it.

looking good!

- i love the iPhone 6/6s/7/8 form factor (and weight!)
- i hate the notch. dont need Face ID. therefore a button (and bezel) for Touch ID is no problem.
- dont need 5G for a few years.
- love the rounded corners (probably the last of this for a while as trend is towards more squarish shape)
- Haptic touch is just as good as 3D Touch. (i have the 6s right now, and it has 3D touch, but Haptic Touch is just as good in every practical way)
- i only need a basic, single lens camera

but i am hoping it has a U-1 chip that can be used with Find My app. really want this!

- max storage of only 128GB is low for me, but doable.
- i hope it does not have a headphone jack, but as the base model in the iPhone line it likely will have one.
- looking forward to having one last new iPhone with Lightning to get the max use of my Lightning-USB-C cables.

iOS 13 has decidedly killed even 5 hours of battery on my current iPhone 6s.
considering that i bought this iPhone 6s exactly 4 years ago (four !), it has been a really great phone !!!
but i appreciate the possibility of a new model launching within Q1 2020.
Why do you "hope it does not have a headphone jack"? You do realise the iPhone 6 works with all of: headphone jack headphones; lightning jack headphones; bluetooth headphones? What is the advantage you hope to get from removing the headphone jack?

Night Mode is software driven yes, but it’s only on new devices with A13 chips.
I’m sure it’ll be on the new SE since it has the A13 in it according to this rumor.
People also seem to not realise that, impressive as it is, you need to use a tripod to use nightmode. If you want a low light camera which you can hold in your hand, then you do actually need a real camera, not a phone camera. Even iPhone's fancy triple lens thingo simply doesn't let enough light in to to use a fast enough shutter speed for hand held low light shots.

Me too. And I trust his reporting and informed connections about that about 10000x over the keyboard jockeys here who purport to have all the insight and answers on how Apple operates and why.
Yeah. Only all of that is contradicted by the fact that the 4" form factor is dead, across the mobile phone industry.

No it doesnt. People watch movies on their phones now, 4" just doesn't cut it. That cult is not as massive as you imagine it to be. And 4,7" is quite small, frankly.

I wouldn't go that far. I watch Youtube videos on my SE all the time. Never once gave any thought to how much nicer it would look on bigger screens. 4' was the standard that Apple set ages ago, and while it may be outdated compared to the flagship phones, it'll work just fine for a low-end iPhone.

Yes, it will replace the iPhone 8 in the lineup - they will discontinue the 8 when this comes out. It might cannibalize sales of the 11 slightly, but with the older form factor most people who buy this would probably pickup a 7 or 8 at current pricing (7 isn't currently in the Apple store, but many carriers still have it as the cheapest iPhone option).

Very likely the same modem that is in the iPhone 11.
Apple is said to be use OMG Qualcomm modems in ALL its 2020 iPhones though... it was reported on this website. So I expect it to have a Qualcomm and not an Intel.

Personally, I would expect an Intel modem on the SE2, given it's a low-cost device. For the SE, Apple also put in an old modem for iPhone SE because it was targeted at emerging markets without advanced 4G networks. Also, the SE2 slots below XR and 11. None of them have 4x4 MIMO, which means Qualcomm would be a waste.

I thought all currently sold iPhones, e.g. 8 comes with 5 years of support?
Are you sure it's not 5 years starting from their launch date, which would leave the 8 with 3 years of iOS updates ? Honest question.

My wife and every other SE owner I know didn’t buy it for its low price. They love it for the size. She refused to get the iPhone 6, 6S, 7 and 8. And she will refuse any other future phone with that form factor. She is on her second SE and tells me she would happily pay iPhone 11 prices for a state-of-the-art phone that’s as small as the SE. But she will not get an iPhone 8 sized phone even if it was given to her for free.

My go-to example is - I can travel for a couple of months for that money. I’ll take that experience and memories over a slightly better gadget all day every day.

Hmm... you can travel for couple of months? Who can actually have time off from work for that length of time? The answer is, no one, apart from the people who don't have a job to begin with.

And here I am with my iPhone 6 :p - whose design never seems to be outdated.

This $399 iPhone SE2 rumor makes sense if, and only if, the following happens:
1 - The market is clearly stated as for the "entry-level" user who doesn't care about performance, camera, and does basic stuff with their phone like calling - including FaceTime calls - and maybe taking picture or two. Trust me, there is big market for that and right now these people (older generation and young kids) are tempted to buy the clearance 7 or basic 8, or worse a used 6 - 6s or 7. Apple would rather sell a new phone and the service(s) with it, esp. AppleCare. They want families to trade-in their older phones and get new ones for the kids... or the grandparents!
2 - Apple would have to get rid of the iPhone 8. With a A11 chip, it would not make much sense at $449 considering it has a single 12MP wide lens camera.
By the way, I'm assuming the iPhone SE2 gets the same lens though maybe without Optical Image Stabilization.
... and anyone who is thinking of a $399 phone with the best camera around is dreaming. If you remember what Apple "sold" with the latest 11 phones, it was the camera. Basically if you want to take great pictures with lots of options, you will pay the price.
3 - Apple would also remove the 8 Plus from the price list. This one because it is a thorn is their side, considering it has a better camera that any phone except the 11 Pros (and previous Xs, XS Max) at a fraction of the cost ($549). Remember, the 8 Plus has the "telephoto" lens which the $599 iPhone XR and $699 iPhone 11 do not have. Getting rid of the 8 Plus would satisfy Apple's Marketing and positioning of the products... you want the 2x optical zoom lens, you pay the price and get the $999+ phones. Great for the bottom line!
Using the iPhone 7 design would be cost-effective. I don't see wireless charging - and a glass back - as an option, so the iPhone 8 design is out. All aluminum is cheaper to make. I'm not sure Apple would use the latest A13 chip, I would think the A12 would make more sense from a cost point of view. We'll see what happens...

I don't think it's supposed to be that cheap. I am sure they will use the A13 chip and 64/128 GB options aswell as the iPhone 8 shell with the glass for wireless charging and also the OIS for the camera.

Exactly my view. This new iPhone looks like a nice complement to my iPad mini 5. (Have an iPhone 6 today.) Question is, assuming I at home use my iPad mini over wifi, for everything except phone calls, will I need an iPhone with 5G over the next 4 years?

ps Laughing at people spending $2K on a foldable phone. My iPad mini 5 plus this phone will cost me $798.

I wish they also made SE Plus 5.5" 1080p then I'm definitely buying immediately! 🥳
I don't have iPhone 6 Plus but just as old android phone (5.5" 1080p and can't imagine going smaller) I was actually thinking of upgrading now to iPhone 7 Plus (especially since the brand new iPad is also A10) but I wait now to see this SE 2.
I know a lot of people wish SE 2 was 4", it seems like there is a market for small but top-spec and they say they would pay more, but I think the market for big but cheap is a lot bigger.

The iPhone 8 has a Qualcomm and Intel modem, if you got an unlocked model here in the UK for example as I understand it came with a Qualcomm modem. So was the Qualcomm a waste for every iPhone prior to the XR and XS? They could happily stick to the Qualcomm modem the 8 came with and still have better reception then any flagship iPhone, including thenXT and 11! And it would keep in line with their ambition to use Qualcomm modems in all iPhones next year.
