The issue with TouchID is that is require interaction and is not automatic like FaceID. As one is already staring at the screen to authenticate is quick even while wearing gloves in certain conditions whereas with TouchID one has to reach their thumb or finger to initiate an action and with gloves is just another added step.
I disagree with that in some cases. For me TouchID was usually faster at unlocking because I could feel the physical button while picking it up (or pulling it out of my pocket) and unlock my iPhone before it ever even needs to see my face. For FaceID to unlock I need to hold it up to my face and swipe up.

That is a reason why under the screen touchID doesn't seem like a big deal to me.

Tim Cook is not trying to quickly bring back Touch ID because he doesn't care about users. He cares about his beloved shareholders. If Cook believed that bringing back Touch ID would significantly drive up sales and thus benefit shareholders, he would push harder to quickly bring back Touch ID.

It's times like these when I wish Apple had a product person like Steve Jobs as CEO and not an MBA suit like Cook as CEO.

"Face ID with a mask on iPhone is already a great biometrics solution."

He's missing the point. The main push for things like under-screen TouchID is to provide an alternative to the notch with the aim of a full screen/notch-less front panel, not to find a superior biometrics solution.

I feel like Apple is really slowing up in terms of R&D lately. It's 2022, this year should have been notch-free, or at the very least a pinhole display which isn't brand new tech. Give us TouchID on the side button like the iPad, increase the bezel width to accommodate the top speaker and FaceTime camera and we're good.

This is a misleading comment as FaceID will not authenticate unless it detects a face. Now if it did not read one’s face due to poor angle it will attempt to re-authenticate similar to TouchID if someone had a wet finger or something else. At the end of the day FaceID is faster and more convenient. I have had very few misreads with it and it was due to a narrow field of view compared to my iPad. When is iPhone going to get the same FaceID wide view as the 2018 iPad Pro, it’s 2022 already what is going on at Apple.
It is not misleading at all. If I carry my phone in my hand and my skin touches the screen, it wakes. When it wakes, Face ID tries to authenticate. Because the phone is facing my chest, my arm, or some other body part; it doesn't see my face and it fails the attempt.

This happens a couple times while I'm walking about and those failed authentication attempts burn up all of the allowed attempts, which means the iPhone requires that the passphrase be entered to unlock.

Touch ID on my iPad and 14 inch MacBook Pro works about 50% of the time. I constantly have to delete and reenter a new fingerprint to get it working for awhile. Never had an issue with fast, convenient FaceID on my phones.

Why can't we just put it in a recessed Apple logo on the back of the phone? Or on the lock button like on the iPad Air?

Figuring out ways to embed it under a display seems like a massive waste of engineering resources when there are perfectly reasonable alternatives.

If Apple was going to implement underscreen Touch ID , during the 2 years of the Pandemic would have been the right time Obviously with 7 different underscreen patents issued
Apple has no interest in doing this I too would like to see this happen but the reality is that it’s nothing more than a pipe dream ???

You forgot the “/s” at the end of your comment. ?
No sarcasm tag needed, for me it’s good and I like it. My phone sits on the table a couple feet away, it dings and I have to pick it up so it unlocks and flick it where with touching just sat my finger on it and read the screen. Plus it moved Siri to the side so it invokes every time I pick it up, big hands and hold tight so I don’t drop it.

no biggie, we don’t all have to like the exact same thing.

Face ID is already more secure and convenient than TouchID just like bluetooth is more convenient than wired headphones.

Neither Touch ID or a 3.5mm headphone jack are coming back. They are old technology and already replaced by better options.

It seems so blindingly obvious to me I don't understand why people struggle to understand this.

Completely disagree with Apple's viewpoint here.

Fingerprint security is great for more angles and processes, FaceID is only good from one point of view. For example, when you want to FaceID in your car, you have to set up your phone mount to suit that entire process, instead of just touching the screen. I get really tired of Apples mentality of "we know what's best for you".

Samsung's under-screen touch ID has spoiled me, I will totally admit, and it's now been around for at least two generations of their phones. I think Apple's reluctance in using this is for that reason - they can't do it better, so they're going to just opt-out.

That’s very odd, I have never had this happen when I’m not looking at it.

security != convenience

Negative, at least on the Touch ID part of things. It's biometric security as a variant. Even Apple uses it on products where they cannot use FaceID, which is totally appropriate, since they have no standard orientation on iPads to really make it work as reliably as they should.

The moment Apple puts FaceID on every single product they own, they would have massive outcry about how people orient their devices. Even their brand spankin new Macs come with TouchID. There are great reasons why FaceID is not perfect, and it's still biometrics as a variant to include TouchID. It's not going away anytime soon.

I think with apple decides to not include technologies it’s competitors are having success with it’s not because they can’t make it work as good as it’s competitors clearly have, rather it’s because they don’t own the patents to it and cannot get a bargain basement exclusivity deal with any manufacturer.
