Hopefully Apple realizes this and won't infer that no one wants devices that aren't phablets. I would hate if the smallest available phone sizes in the future are > 6 inches.
Unfortunately the profit margins are much higher in larger phones

Great. So not only has Apple killed the iPhone SE, but they're going to end up killing the iPhone XS 5.8" size for not being popular enough. We'll all just walk around with 12.9" iPhone Ultra's strapped to our faces in 10 years. Am I the only one sick and tired of the giant phone craze?
No, you’re not, but we do seem to be a minority.

Yet for the past year some people kept a saying the X is perfect in size and that a Plus model is unnecessary.

I will be interested in next year's Max model but understandably the size and weight of it would be less ideal for those with small hands. My other half would easily be satisfied with the Xs as it can be used one handed while multitasking.

No, people see it as 1,500 because that is how much it costs.

Not true. Most people buy phones on plans. In the UK the monthly cost difference between the Xs and Max is just £4/month. No wonder the Max is selling well.

THIS THIS AND THIS AGAIN. No doubt in my mind in a fwe years the trend will reverse and people will be demanding smaller phones again. Just a shame they've completely abandoned the 'normal ' sized phones for these monsters. Even the XR is huge.
Hope so. I like the idea of a large phone. They're great for consuming content and even editing photos on the go in Lightroom Mobile. I got the 6 Plus at launch. I loved the display and battery life. I tried to like it, but over time I hated it more and more. Probably didn't help that it only had 1GB of RAM so it would crash all the time, lol. It would be nice to have a large phone, but in practice it's just not very ergonomic in many people's pockets and hands. The day I can get a smallish to medium iPhone that unfolds into an iPad Mini is going to be a great day. Unfortunately that day is likely around 10 years away, lol, unless Samsung can push Apple in that direction faster.

Genius marketing - get consumers to buy the X (“the screen is the same size as a plus”), then buy the XS Max for the bigger screen.

It was obvious from the start they would have launched a plus version in the future. Delaying it by an year was pure marketing.
Next year: pencil support maybe or a slightly different design. I don't think they'll be able to remove the notch, but maybe reduce it a little bit.

Anyway I'm not surprised at all Max is outselling the Xs. I think I'll go for the Xs as I'm a Plus user and got tired of handling a big phone. In a week I'll be eligible for an upgrade and even today it is possible to find Xs models available to pick up so I won't have any problems getting mine through my carrier.

Looks like it. Time to adapt or perhaps there is an android that catches your eye?

I'm not saying it isn't correct, just that I'm stunned. I just can't imagine that huge phone that needs two hands outsells the XS by 3-4x's. Perhaps it is a one off this year since few upgraded from the X and you have a large number of holdouts from the 8 Plus and earlier getting the bigger phone they wanted? I'm surprised.

You don't need two hands. I certainly do not. That is an exaggeration.

Apple is being very clever about their pricing. There are actually good, fast phones at lots of price points, but the best phones are really expensive. In other words, they are positioned to extract the maximum price from people at the same time everyone is getting a good phone. Very well done.

I went max instead of normal because of the extra battery life and the feeling that iOS is designed for the larger screen.

Too much of the standard phone is taken up with wasted space, it is the same on both but you have more real estate to play with.

Yes. Pencil support is inevitable.
The notch will be reduced.
Weight reduction will become a focus as the current Max is very heavy.

triple lens?

I think many people will go for the larger screens, especially those who already have Apple Watches because they don't need to pull their phones out of their pockets as often as before just to check the time or a notification. It goes directly to the watch on their wrist. Also, if they already have Airpods, they don't have to pull out their phones just to answer or make a call. But when they pull it out they have a large enough screen that they don't miss their iPads. The iPhone XS Max might be the reason why Apple hasn't released an updated iPad Mini. Then there are those who always use their iPhones with two hands and prefer the big screens to display for information at once or bigger photos. I still have an iPhone 6S and I'm considering upgrading but I will wait until I can play with all three in the store a few weeks from now.

Makes sense. 512GB is as big or bigger than a large percentage of MBs, MBPs and MBAs our there! It seems like overkill for a phone that many people will replace within a year or two. Paying for 1TB or more on a Mac makes more sense since they tend to be kept for 4-5 years by many folks.

Its literally this most likely. Last year if you had a 7+ there was no reason to upgrade, and the X hinted at what a + phone might offer you. This year you get that + phone so users will upgrade. You'll also get some 8+ users upgrading due to the nicer screen.

Conversely the XS is fairly similar to the X, so you won't be attracting as many X users to upgrade, nor anyone with a 6s/7 that didn't like the X last year.

triple lens?

Feels like they've made a decent step forward with the computational photography side compared to when they started bringing in the dual lens phones. So maybe that will have them hold fire on more lenses. Two lenses plus focus pixels should provide a nice amount of data to determine depth

It’s definitely not going to happen. Xr will outsold by far Xs max. The only reason why Xs max outsold Xs is that people are waiting for Xr.

Sure. There's probably some on here waiting but I've yet to walk into anyone i know who's saying anything about an xr. It'll sport an inferior camera, cheap looking aluminum, etc.

Not surprised at all. This is why the XR was delayed (no Apple defense kool aid please.) Once the XR is online Xs 6.5” sales will slow significantly. X owners will upgrade in 2019. :apple:

My i phone 512GB XS Max arrived on Friday and i couldn't be happier with the switch from my I phone X .

It has the same main camera with smart HDR etc.
No dual lens
Larger screen than the X
Lower resolution LCD but same density as the 6s/7/8 which was fine
Aluminium which may not be as shiny, but you get colour matching. And if its in a case you won't see the shiny Stainless Steel anyway
Lots of great looking colours
25% less expensive than the XS for almost the same functionality

Its going to fly off shelves.

It is pure psychology to go after XS Max (for those who value that mobiles can be bought for ridiculous prices) instead of XS for $100 difference after spending $1000 onwards! Apple cleverly position their expensive one as value proposition when customers compare various iPhone models! Most of the fans of Apple go after the most expensive one! Apple knows how to trap them with mind games!

I was a victim few years ago!

No but you do seem to be part of a very local minority.
