Agreed. Either add functionality to my phone (or watch) or replace it. I'm not carrying around another device. The only other alternative is the glasses form factor but that is because I already wear glasses. That won't work for everyone.

But they won't sell you an empty frame to put your usual prescription lenses in. You'll have to order from them for the low, low price of 1999.99 per lens...

Won’t last, the technology is not there yet to make it appealing. In 50 years, we gonna have devices that can read your brainwaves, thats gonna be cool.

Not really. The only privacy you've really got left anymore is the inside of your head, and eventually they'll want to access that too.

I'll never use a device that has direct access to my thoughts or my brain. I don't care how innovative or cool it is.

The potential for misuse is staggering.

^This already-carrying items argument resonates. I wear a watch, I have a phone and glasses. Glasses maybe? Probably not; it give creepy surveillance vibes. But I also typically carry airpods, in their neat little case. Perhaps if somehow this Open AI blob gets traction I could see Apple iterating on it, with their own version tied into an airpods case — and hopefully, better privacy.

He’s turning into a joke now after he left Apple
I think he's a phenomenal designer, it's evident how his design philosophy influences everything we interact with in both apple and non-Apple products. What I'm curious about is how synergistic Apple was in the Jobs/Ive/Cook era where they each relied on each other to make it happen. Tim Apple gets a ton of flack, but his genius undoubtably led to Apple being able to manufacture at scale the ideas that Jony cooked up while delivering them at a price point that was attainable to the masses.

I feat that oAI, along w/o a dedicated ops team to deliver hardware at scale will run into issues. The Apple Watch seems very much like an "art project" that was eventually bailed out on cost....

Why not simply a medallion for the center of your forehead?
Got you covered:

He’s an absolutely phenomenal designer, and it was clear that Apple invested a lot of money in keeping him happy in his later years there after he became understandably bored with phone and laptop product design. The gold Apple Watch was reportedly hugely pushed by Ive, and the rumored car was another project Apple undertook to keep him in the tent. Maybe he and Altman will catch lightning in a bottle together, and Ive’s team here is certainly impressive, but I’d be very interested to see how much cash OpenAI is willing to burn to keep a guy like Ive happy and what the eventual ROI on these products might be.

If Jony Ive is involved, at least it’ll be beautiful while eavesdropping.

The funniest part? To move beyond the smartphone, we still need the smartphone.

Called it in a post a few hours ago 😂

Ai Pin has been tried before, but with terrible execution. With ChatGPT they have a chance of making an actually useful product, the problem they have to solve is integrating into your existing systems, like calendars, reminders, emails, messages, etc.

Personally there is still going to be a huge societal pushback to an always on recording device, I'm not sure what overcomes that stigma. My guess is that if it is "active" it will be obvious, and there will be a super simple gesture to disable it.

The software integration will be the real key here, "always on chatgpt" isn't going to be a big enough selling point to get people to carry another device.

so it’s just an Apple Watch without a screen.
I’ve seen the story before… Anyone remember the iPod shuffle without any buttons? The one that Steve had to get on stage a year later and say “oh sorry guys, here are your buttons back.”

The AI Pin wasn’t a bad idea per se; it just wasn't executed very well, and integration into already existing flows was also a problem. If Ive can convincingly solve these problems, I think he has a product.

You're not alone. Maybe it is possible, just maybe, that Jony Ive and Sam Altman know more than keyboard warriors on Macrumors.

Technology fascinates me. Event the biggest flops in tech are a million times greater than anything I could ever create.
One of them has as far as I can tell never had dramatic success in the hardware business, and the other has frequently been criticized for form over functional design.
Just because one of them worked for Apple does not guarantee success, let’s not forget that the AI Pin was also created by a bunch of bored ex-Apple engineers.

People don't keep necklaces on their desk or in their pockets. The new device was previously described as something that could be in pocket or on desk. But I already have an iPhone in my pocket or on my desk... so wouldn't it make the most sense to add this functionality to my iPhone instead of creating a new device? I wonder whether this new company was founded with the intent to develop a technology that Apple could purchase and integrate into future iPhone or AppleWatch models?

Your phone can't always listen and see however due to it being in your pocket

I think the closest thing we have to this is the Limitless Pendant, it will be like this IMO but with a camera.

Might be sooner than 50 years. Although, I don't plan to insert a chip into my brain unless it extends my life 30+ years.

The problem is that it is a bad idea.
When we have phones in our pockets, tablets on our desks, watches on our wrists, earbuds in our ears, smart televisions in our living room, smart speakers in our kitchen and bedrooms and smart glasses on our faces, along with traditional laptops and desktops, where does this device fit in?
To relay 24/7 camera data? Phones and tablets and computers already have cameras, Apple is rumored to be bringing cameras to the AirPods and the Apple Watch, what more can this thing add? Plus we pretty much have microphones on us at all times.
As described, it sounds like a completely unnecessary product.
