What is going on with Apple they have lost the plot and their plans are all over the place, software is minor and hardware has become minor changes, what happened to Apple, maybe stop with cancelling leather and focus on important stuff
It was lost with Steve

I share your opinion on this topic. For this thing, too many of us Apple people seemed to have lost the ability to "think different." It takes only a little imagination to come up with a plethora of uses of this product. For example, this is another kind of cut at the same sort of thing "fold" and "roll"able screen devices are trying to deliver: mobile screens bigger than a brick in your pocket or screen in a bag... this one with no crease, no hinges, no scroll mechanisms.

If you ever wish for a screen bigger than the mobile one with you (iPhone, iPad, MB), this could deliver that out of the same bag... and delivery could be ANY size screen... not just a single size or only a little bigger screen... WITHOUT the scaling up of weight as you choose your bigger screen(s) size.

To your last point, this whole crowd DID passionately ridicule phablet-sized phones for YEARS before Apple went there: "one handed use", "pants with bigger pockets", man purses, developer fragmentation, et all. The word "abominations" was commonly slung. Then Apple rolled out iPhone Phablets and it's as if no one ever had such opinions... and later some of the same people were then ridiculing those who dared to call for smaller screen version of iPhones... and that continues right up to now.

When imaginations shrink too small, progress is hard to picture, feared and/or outright resisted. But soon this will go from imagination vapor to tangible reality. And I suspect much like the "abominations" of phablets, there will be a mass shift in opinion once what Vpro can do is fully revealed and able to be demoed in stores for the doubters.

Maybe if we can adopt some bigger man purses or pants with even bigger pockets, we can find a way to appreciate this entirely new thing from Apple once it can actually be experienced first hand? ;)
It’s not hard to think the applications this can have. But seems like the only one Apple can think of.. at least in their demo are ported 2d ios and ipad os apps, that can be larger…

I had a huge LoL watching WWDC, such a let down

That was only the "sneak peek" trailer... more to get developers going. I would bet large that the true "Wow!" stuff from Apple was held back for the "launching Friday" show, "Pre-order now." I do consider the Any-size screen for computing to a WHOPPER for mobile computer users who would love to somehow have a laptop with a much bigger screen. But there's plenty more potential than only a floating 2D screen of size, wherever one happens to be and wanting to use a laptop.

Whatever biggies Apple can show + whatever impressive apps developers can show + a few things from media partners like Disney (which I don't think will be just movies & TV or 3D movies & TV) is likely all going to be revealed in a pre-launch blitz.

That's the well-proven pattern every time they roll out a new platform that isn't launching only days from now.

It will have its uses sure. But it will remain a niche product at best for the foreseeable future and after the excitement of finally announcing a new product after several years the penny seems to be dropping internally at Apple this will be the case.
Vision Pro, much like the Mac, will be a niche, and a profitable one. And it won’t ever need to be more than a niche to make a decent profit for Apple.

If technology advances significantly so that equivalent computer performance is 10000% more capable than the 1984 or 1987 examples how can one say trivially that computers back then were worth today's $7300? If you took 20 Mac II's and ran them in parallel do you really think they have a fighting chance at besting the performance of a Studio Mac M2 Max? I don't. Thats why we can't simply use inflation calculators to compare purchasing products from different eras with vastly different technology performance. :)
Electronics usually do not make a lot of sense to be cited in inflation calculations because they are traditionally one of the few things that often decreased in price over the last 50 years (my family’s 1974 26 inch colour TV cost $900, not adjusted for inflation.)

That said, inflation comparisons usually do not take relative performance into account… they aren’t comparing how well a 1974 Mercury Bobcat compares with a 2023 Honda Civic, they just indicate how much the usual person (or what percentage of their salary) was spent on an item versus today.

You can’t retroactively go back and say the 1984 computer wasn’t worth $2500 (or $7300 in 2023 dollars) compared to today’s computer, because today’s computer didn’t exist then.

Edit: I think you are all also arguing the same point that the VisionPro is decent tech for the price, it just seemed like the poster you responded to was questioning why inflation was even mentioned, and you asked the same thing, it seemed. Maybe I read them wrong, but it was a little confusing because you all seemed to be arguing the same side (and I think I agree! 😀)

Wrong — Apple has designed it so iOS/iPad apps will be fully usable on visionOS with little work. Native Vision Pro apps will come, but it will take some time because the environment is so new, and Apple understands this.
Yeah, if the cost of development for it from an iPad/iOS version is just some minor UI changes, it’d be a mistake for any developer NOT to develop for it. Because, this will be a group of people who just dropped 4K plus on the system and accessories. I guarantee there will be a few more bucks available to buy whatever apps are available for it.

Sincere question. Why is it the first 10-15 comments on anything posted in Macrumors are quite obviously Apple Haters? Why are you here if you hate Apple? Why would you waste your time engaging with something you dislike so much? I quickly get rid of and don’t engage with anything in my life that zi dislike let alone hate. I love Apple and its amazing products so that’s why I’m here. Why are you?
It’s not the topic. It’s the “discussion”.

They keep focusing on nonsense like this headset, self-driving cars and services instead of sticking to core hardware and software.

I've always been of the opinion that software > hardware, and they sure haven't been focusing on software.
They have more emojis rolling out..SofTwAre...:p

Oh you “callled it?” Are you a prophet?

This product is in its early nascent stages and will truly take off as a killer device in the 2030s.
I find it interesting how some guy on the internet feels they can call something a fail, when major companies like Apple and Meta are both engaged in similar projects. They know the potential otherwise I am sure they wouldn't invest billions of $ into it.
I also see the potential and so much so am investing my livelihood into it [not everything, that would be stupid, but taking a big punt].

This is Apple’s HoloLens. Two generations then it magically disappears into the ether.

I hope like Microsoft, this ends with executives heads rolling. Apple needs new leadership.

The "Elephant in the Room" scenario is VERY heavily at play here I feel.
We should all be intelligent enough to know that Games and Adult Content are THE things people will actually spend real decent money on for great experiences.
I'd even suggest Adult Content of high enough quality would make this product a win for Apple.
It's funny how, even Apple (if it's honest) must realise this, and yet everyone probably at Apple and all the news articles have to pretend that none of that exists or should be considered.

It's funny really :)

Apple may have canceled plans to produce a lower-cost version of the Apple Vision Pro headset, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. There were multiple rumors of a lower-cost model coming out sometime around 2025, but that may not happen.

Kuo does not give a reason for why the lower-cost headset may have been nixed, but he says that unless Apple significantly cuts down on cost, significant shipment growth in Vision Pro shipments may not happen in 2025. Kuo expects Apple to ship approximately 400,000 to 600,000 headsets in 2024, and he says that while it will provide an "excellent experience," it may take "longer than the market expects" to become Apple's next star product.

A second-generation version of the Apple Vision Pro is expected to go into mass production by the first half of 2027 "at the latest," and Kuo says that it is possible there will be no hardware updates for the Vision Pro until then.

Both The Information and Bloomberg have suggested that Apple is working on a more affordable version of the Apple Vision Pro headset. The initial version will be priced at $3,500, which will put it out of reach of many Apple customers.

The rumors have said that Apple is developing a budget-friendly model that could be closer in price to the iPhone, but given the high price of the current model, it is unclear how rapidly Apple could bring component costs down. If Apple does indeed continue work on a more affordable model, it could feature lower resolution internal displays and cheaper build materials.

If they sell 600,000 at $3,400 the first year - that is over $2.1 billion. Pretty good start.
I believe the Vision Pro will sell out quickly in 2024. Every developer I know that has gone to the Vision Pro Dev training has come back totally blown away in awe and excitement.

Fifty years of home video have taught us at least a couple of things:
1) Sex sells
2) People would rather tell you they watched a movie last night about a psychopath killing dozens of people, than say they watched an adult film.

I guess it’s funny, but probably more telling than a Rorschach test.

This news was expected, but it's welcome nonetheless. With the exception of the front-facing display, there aren't really any components of the Vision Pro that can be jettisoned to cut costs without significantly affecting the user experience. Better for them to keep the Vision as a platform for testing out spatial computing applications than to try to gain a substantial market foothold.

Don't think it will be cancelled. It might just take a long time to hit the market.
This. We barely have much details about the Vision Pro, let alone a non-Pro model.

I'm sure there's some truth to this rumor much like the rumors of a "VR headset" and "AR glasses" in the years leading up to WWDC '23.

So I think it's more likely Apple is waiting to see how the Vision Pro is received before committing to a non-Pro model's development right now. Especially with how pricey the tech is. Might need to wait for display supply chains to improve.

If the Pro ends up being a relative success next year, then I definitely see Apple jumpstarting the non-Pro model's development. Otherwise, there is the risk of competitors capturing a potential mid-range VR market if they wait too long.

Well, it's not just lovers or haters. Some people like Apple products and would want them to be better or cheaper. Some see them as premium/luxury products and wouldn't mind paying more. Some can be frustrated by rosy marketing vs product reality, or by product segmentation pushing buyers toward most expensive models. All can express their thoughts here, and the forum doesn't especially strike me as lover or hater.

I see this particular benefit so clearly and yet too many seem to lack an ability to see this at all. Stick this and a keyboard or bottom half of a MB in a bag and you have the much desired 17" MB... and an 18" MB... and a 20"MB... and a 27" MB... and a 50" MB wherever you want to do anything on a laptop. If we're willing to shell out $2499 for "starting at" for 16" MB now, what would we pay for a 20" MB or a 27" MB?

Want a 27" iMac before Apple decides to make one? Here it is... along with the 30" that some want, the 32" others want and a 40" and 50" one too. Ultra-wide iMac anyone? How about TWO ultra-wides?

Want an iPad Mini for small size and light weight? Want an iPad Max for big screen size? Want a BIGGER iPad Max than Apple has made yet? Instead of buying 3 iPads, how about let one purchase come with all screen sizes and then some?

Wish you could bring your biggest TV with you on your travels? Watch your big screen on the plane? In the hotel? Or how about an even bigger screen in such places?

Here it all is... all in the SAME package at the SAME weight for a SINGLE price.

Make it do this one thing well- an ANY-size screen available for any mobile purposes- and I'm sold, even if it does nothing else. I paid about $2K for a rigidly-fixed size desktop screen, far too heavy & cumbersome to probably ever move from where it sits right now. I love it for the productivity having plenty of screen gives me. When I have to shift from it to a "tiny" 16" MBpro screen, that productivity plunges. Vpro offers the ability to have the big screen with me wherever I go/am.

I hope it can do this one thing well. If $2K for a forever-anchored, single-sized screen is easily justified, $1500 more for one that can be with me anywhere I travel seems like quite a great buy to me.
but it doesn’t run mac apps

The "clever" thing re the goggles is that by pricing it so insanely high they can get away with selling a "standard" version for only $2k and everyone will say "what a bargain!"

Meanwhile Sony sell their headset for about £500. Apples and oranges perhaps but in the eyes of the buying public?

While Sony's is definitely more affordable, you still need the PS5 on top of that. So you're really spending $1000 in total.

And that's just for gaming. If you want to do anything else you're sh*t out of luck. So even in the eyes of the public they'll likely see it as fundamentally different devices.

And that's not taking into account portability either. At least with standalone headsets like Meta's or the Vision, you can take it anywhere comfortably. You can't say the same for PS5 VR (or even PCVR for that matter).

And Apple isn't necessarily pricing the Vision ridiculously high on purpose. Each display is rumored to cost ~$350. That means the displays alone cost more than some headsets out there.

But frankly who would want to do all of the other things other than gaming this side of 2030? And how many vision Pro buyers won't have dropped a ton of cash already on Apple products? Ok you dont necessarily need a Mac or an iPhone but I bet they will have them.

I believe that. Also, I don't think anybody questions the product itself but the price or rather what it does/doesn't do for $3.5k.
